Dear all,
Recently, I received an email from Andrew Groover(Research Geneticist.
US Forest Service. Davis CA) asking for assistance in obtaining
germplasm for a new project. Andrew will be glad to provide more
information if anyone of you is interested in the project. Below, I am
forwarding you Andrew's message. Thank you very much for your help.
Sincerely,

Dear Colleague,
As part of a new project funded by the US Department of Energy, we are
examining the role of ploidy changes in developing superior hybrid
poplar for bioenergy production. We are currently seeking to establish
the frequency of triploidy and aneuploidy in F1 interspecific hybrids in
traditional breeding programs. We are writing to ask if you can provide
us a small amount of leaf tissue (less than 0.5g) from F1 individuals
from any of the species combinations listed below. Ideally, we would
like to have between as few as 6 and as many as 24 F1s from each full
sib family, and if available tissue from the parents. We can process up
to 20 families from your collections. Trees for which some phenotypic
information is available would be highest priority, as would be trees
that you suspect might be triploid/aneuploid (based on growth phenotype
or sterility).
For the tissue we receive from you, we will use low-coverage “next
generation” sequencing to develop a molecular karyotype for each
individual. We will make the karyotype as well as SNP marker genotypes
available to you for the submitted samples. If you wish, you may code
the identities of the samples but we do need to know the relationships
among samples (i.e. which samples are from the same family and which
samples are from parents vs F1s).
If you are interested in participating in the project, please contact
Andrew Groover (agroover(a)fs.fed.us <mailto:agroover@fs.fed.us>
530-759-1738). We will establish with you what genotypes should be
sequenced, and provide you with collection instructions and vials, and a
shipping account. We very much appreciate your assistance.
Sincerely,
Luca Comai and Isabelle Henry (UC Davis)

Dear Colleagues,
Forest bioenergy is one of six thematic areas included in the IUFRO Strategy
2010-2014. In this context, I would like to draw your attention to the
High-level Research Conference "The Future Role of Bio-energy from Tree
Biomass in Europe" that will be held from 6 to 11 November 2011 in Vienna,
Austria.
The conference is organized by IUFRO in collaboration with the European
Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) and the European Science
Foundation (ESF), the Austrian Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry,
Environment and Water Management, and the Austrian Federal Research and
Training Centre for Forests, Natural Hazards and Landscape (BFW). The new
IUFRO Task Force on Forest Bioenergy has played a key role in developing the
scientific programme of the conference.
In 2011, the International Year of the Forest, the conference will
contribute to understanding bio-energy drivers, options and impacts on
forest growing, management and production of traditional goods and services
in the future. The scientific programme will focus on
- Availability of biomass
- Biodiversity, landscape ecology and soil water quality
- Supply chain and system evaluation
- Forest biomass as feedstock for the energy and biorefinery sector
The Conference will feature lectures by invited high-level speakers, short
talks by young and early stage researchers, poster sessions and open
discussion periods as well as a forward look. You can find detailed
information about the conference at <http://www.esf.org/index.php?id=8196>
http://www.esf.org/index.php?id=8196.
You are strongly encouraged to register your participation by 1 August 2011

Forests play a vital role for rural as well as urban populations all over
the world. They are an essential natural resource providing multiple
benefits to people.
Their conservation and sustainable management are closely linked with global
issues such as food supply and environmental protection.
Scientific knowledge is needed all over the world to effectively address
these issues globally and regionally and provide the basis for political
decisions.
Close international cooperation in forest science and related disciplines is
required to enable forests to satisfy the manifold human needs in a
sustainable way.
This conference is designed to bring together researchers in forest products
and related fields from around the world. Discussion will embrace progress
and needs in research to meet rapidly increasing demands for all kinds of
forest products, while maintaining the forest as a source of such products
and a resource for social, economic and environmental benefits.
The major topics to be discussed are:
Wood Quality
Properties and Utilization of Plantation Woods
Physio-mechanical Properties of Wood
Energy and Chemicals from Forest Biomass
Wood-based materials and their Applications
Forest Products Marketing
Wood Processing
Non-wood Forest Products

FAO, in collaboration with forest management, climate change experts and
relevant stakeholders, is developing guidelines to assist forest managers to
effectively respond to climate change challenges and opportunities. These
guidelines will include actions related to both climate change adaptation
and mitigation and will be relevant to all types of forests, all management
objectives and all types of managers. More information on this effort may be
found here FAO Forests and
<http://www.fao.org/forestry/climatechange/65120/en/> Climate Change
Programme or requested at Climate-Change-Forest-Managers(a)fao.org.
To facilitate the development of the guidelines, we are conducting a survey
for forest managers (The survey in English
<https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/9L22T2Q> ). We are inviting you to provide
your views and perceptions on factors that limit the ability of forest
managers to prepare for and respond to climate change.
Kindly forward the survey to your members and your mailing list(s). The
content of individual responses will not be published and will remain
anonymous.
Kindly allocate 15 minutes to complete this survey.
Thank you in advance for your time and effort in responding to the survey.
Best regards,
The Forests and Climate Change Team
