POSITION: Entomologist/Chemical Ecologist – 2 year appointment (potential
of renewal beyond this) at the Postdoctoral level in the Department of
Entomology, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI 48823.
AVAILABLE: Starting in May 2008 or until filled.
RESEARCH: The successful applicant will take a leading role in a joint
research project with Dr. Therese Poland (USDA Forest Service) and Dr. Jim
Miller (Michigan State University) investigating the chemical ecology of
the emerald ash borer (EAB, Agrilus planipennis, Coleoptera: Buprestidae).
EAB is native to Asia and was discovered in 2002 causing widespread
mortality of ash trees in southeastern Michigan. We have shown that EAB
is attracted to girdled ash trees and identified several antennally- and
behaviorally-active volatiles from ash (particularly stressed ash). We
have also found differences in preference for several ash species and
related differences in their volatile profiles. We have explored visual
and olfactory cues used in host and mate finding behaviors. The project
will continue to explore the volatiles of ash trees (including American and
Chinese hybrids) and the role of chemical ecology in host and mate finding.
Ultimately, the results of the research will lead to the development of
traps and attractants for detection, monitoring, and control of EAB.
QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. in entomology, insect chemical ecology, or related
discipline. Desire individual with background and/or interest in chemical
ecology, insect behavior, plant/insect interactions and IPM. Familiarity
with coupled gas chromatography and electroantennographic detection to
assess host volatiles and behavioral assays is desirable.
SALARY: Starting $36,000/year with an excellent benefits package.
APPLICATION: Send letter of interest, curriculum vitae, and the names and
email addresses of three references to:
