Multiple assistantships (M.S. and Ph.D.) available to study native and non-native forest
insect dynamics at the School of Environmental and Forest Sciences, University of
Washington, Seattle, Washington
Anticipated Start Date: Autumn Quarter, 2015
Application Deadline: December 31, 2014 for Priority Consideration
Multiple graduate student assistantships are available in the laboratory of Dr. Patrick
Tobin starting in Autumn Quarter, 2015.
Students selected for these assistantships will have the opportunity to participate in one
of several research projects broadly aimed at quantifying the roles of abiotic and biotic
factors on the rate of non-native insect establishment and spread, and their effects on
native ecosystems; and investigating relationships among native insects, plant pathogens,
and climate in second-growth Douglas-fir forests in western Washington. Potential projects
could include field-based research, laboratory-based research, and modeling, or a
combination of all three.
Applications from students with interests in invasion ecology, entomology, and forest
ecology are encouraged to apply. Students with a strong quantitative and/or GIS background
are particularly encouraged to apply.
Interested students should send an email to pctobin(a)uw.edu and include the following:
(1) A cover letter outlining your relevant coursework and experience, research interests,
and career goals; and
(2) Your Curriculum Vitae that includes your undergraduate and (if relevant) graduate GPA,
and your GRE scores.
Applicants will also need to formally apply to the School of Environmental and Forest
Sciences. See the following link for instructions:
