I would be VERY interested in hearing about any successful operational/applied disease or insect resistance programs for forest trees (the area that I work in) - both for non-native pathogens and insects as well as for native ones; both for plantation forestry as well as for restoration purposes (such as one of the programs I am involved with for developing white pine blister rust resistance in whitebark pine (a species proposed for listing in the U.S. under the Endangered Species Act)). Please email me any information at rsniezko(a)fs.fed.us<mailto:rsniezko@fs.fed.us>. I am particularly interested in programs that have gotten to the stage of reforestation or restoration with resistant seedlings (or rooted cuttings, etc). An email contact of one or more people associated with such programs would be appreciated (as would any summaries of programs). I've been involved in organizing several international workshops of disease and insect resistance and am considering organizing another one in the near future - scientists that would be interested in such a workshop can also send me their contact information (see information on the 2011 workshop (and its proceedings) and the 2015 workshop below for information on two recent meetings).
A few references on resistance work and programs are below - but in general it is out of date, not world-wide, and shows relatively few programs that have advanced to the reforestation/restoration stage using resistant materials. Some of this is obviously due to the long-term commitments needed to develop an applied program and implement restoration, etc, but compiling information on other programs that have progressed to this stage, or are currently aiming for it (rather than just in the 'research' phase) would be useful.
I am also interested in newer programs or programs that are still pretty much in the 'research' phase - so please fill free to send that information as well.
Ultimately, I'll try to compile the responses and make available in some form.

As we cancelled the all-Division 7 conference in Istanbul that was planned for April 2016 (due to safety concerns), the Research Group coordinators, deputies and I have been thinking about options for a postponed or replacement all-Division conference.
We decided to use the opportunity to schedule our all-Division 7 meeting embedded within the upcoming 125th Anniversary IUFRO Congress next year (19-22 September 2017, Freiburg, Germany, see http://iufro2017.com/ ). This will be a special Congress, with participation from all of IUFRO, celebrating the 125th Anniversary of IUFRO. A number of other IUFRO Divisions will be embedding their all-division meetings within the congress and we (Div. 7) were invited to do so too. It is indeed an excellent opportunity to meet in Freiburg, and joining this helps to keep things simple because the congress organising team is helping with the organisational aspects and the venue. Incidentally, Sandy Liebhold (Deputy Div. 7 and Entomology RG coordinator) will chair the Congress Scientific Committee (for the entire congress).
We are also planning a field trip and Hervé Jactel (INRA, France) offered to organise it. This will likely include visits to forests in the Vosges Mountains (to see and discuss some forest health issues) as well as wine tasting in the Rhine Valley.
We encourage you all to consider submitting a session proposal for the all Div. 7 portion within the conference.
The deadline for session proposals is 15 June 2016 (see http://iufro2017.com/call-for-session/ ). In contrast to the IUFRO World Congress, IUFRO officers are welcome to organize sessions at the Freiburg congress around working party themes. We also may propose the sessions that were planned for the cancelled conference in Istanbul at the 125th Anniversary Congress so organizers of those session are welcome to resubmit them here too. Cancellation of IUFRO All Division 7 Conference – “Global Change and Forest Health” in Istanbul from 25-29 April 2016
This is addressed to all those who planned to attend the Division 7 conference in Istanbul next month. Given the recent terrorist attacks in Ankara and Istanbul, the threat of more attacks, and several governments now advising caution regarding visits to sites of interest and the use of public transport, the conference organising committee has decided to cancel (or postpone) the conference.
We have been planning this event for about five years, and a huge amount of work has gone into its preparation by Yusuf Serengil and his colleagues, the local organisers, as well as the scientific committee. We are very sad that it has come to this, but under the circumstances we feel it is no longer possible to provide the conference delegates with a worry-free event.
We were hoping that the situation in Turkey would improve or at least that Istanbul remained free of terrorist activities; however, the opposite occurred.
Many of you will already have made travel arrangements, and we appreciate that it is inconvenient to cancel at this stage. Yusuf Serengil and the University of Istanbul have agreed to reimburse the registration fee (less bank charges). Travel agents, airlines and hotels may waive or reduce cancellations fees if you point out the threat of terrorist attacks and government travel advisories. Unfortunately, the conference organisers or IUFRO cannot assist with this.
It is too late to change the venue to another location, while maintaining the dates. However, the Division 7 coordinators will discuss the options for a future Division 7 conference, and we will advise you about this in the coming months. In the meantime there will be other conferences and meetings of Division 7 working groups later this year, including our contribution to the IUFRO Regional Congress for Asia and Oceania in Beijing in October. We look forward to seeing you at another event this year or in the near future.

PhD Scholarship - Invasion Biology
A PhD Scholarship is now available in the School of Biological Sciences, University of Auckland, New Zealand
This scholarship will cover tuition fees and provide a stipend for 3 years from a University of Auckland-Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) jointly funded project on 'Experimental establishment and eradication of plant pathogen and pest insect populations'.
The project aims to use experimental releases and eradications of biological control agents as proxy invasive species systems to identify key factors influencing the establishment, population dynamics and eradication of selected plant pathogen and insect species.
The project is supervised by Drs Darren Ward (Landcare Research & Biological Sciences, University of Auckland) and Eckehard Brockerhoff (Scion (New Zealand Forest Research Institute) & B3).
Value: $25,000 annual stipend plus tuition fees.
Tenure of award: Three years. Closing dates for applications: Thursday 24th March 2016 (late applications may be considered)
Background. Biological invasions can be considered as a sequence of processes or phases including (1) transport and arrival in a country, (2) establishment of an initial reproductive population, and (3) population growth and spread. The second phase of the invasion process is critical as this is where the establishment of a small founder population occurs, and because the success of eradication of invasive species is much higher while populations are small. However, there is limited information about 'actual' establishments as most invasion events are detected only years after the event and there is rarely any knowledge of the original arrival, the pathway that was involved, and how many individuals were introduced. Likewise, there is usually incomplete information about the timing of establishment or the exact size and distribution of populations that are targeted for eradication.
Selection criteria:
* Master's degree in biology, ecology or a related area;
* understanding of statistics for ecological research;
* experience with pathogen lab cultures and/or rearing insects would be beneficial;
* practical field experience would also be beneficial (as the project will involve field work and travel within New Zealand)

* In order to be accepted as the candidate, the student must pass the criteria for enrolment at the University of Auckland.
It is hoped a decision about the successful candidate can be made by the 7th April 2016
The start date is flexible but ideally between May and July 2016. The PhD can either be based in Auckland and/or Christchurch.
