Dear all,
On behalf of the organising committee I would like to remind you that
the call for symposia deadline (28th February 2011) is approaching for
the Second IUFRO International conference on Biodiversity in Forest
Ecosystems and Landscapes http://www.ucc.ie/en/iufro2012/:
It is also now listed on the IUFRO events page
http://www.iufro.org/events/calendar/
This conference will build on the success of the first IUFRO
International Conference on Biodiversity in Forest Ecosystems and
Landscapes which was held in Kamloops in 2008. It will aim to provide an
international forum for researchers, practitioners and students to
discuss the challenges of maintaining and enhancing biodiversity in
forests, and consider emerging trends in the sustainable management of
forest ecosystems and landscapes. The conference will be held at
University College Cork, Ireland in August 2012.
We look forward to seeing you there!
Best Wishes,

Researchers from over 15 countries have already submitted abstracts for the INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON DYNAMICS AND ECOLOGICAL SERVICES OF DEADWOOD IN FOREST ECOSYSTEMS to be held in Rouyn-Noranda (Québec, Canada), May 15-19, 2011. As some people learned only recently about this exciting and important event, we have pushed the abstract submission deadline to January 28, 2011.
WE ARE PLEASED TO CONFIRM OUR KEYNOTE SPEAKERS
Christophe Bouget (Cemagref, France) - Deadwood in the context of biomass harvesting for energy production
Juha Siitonen (Finnish Forest Research Institute) - Ecological importance of deadwood and saproxylic insects in forest ecosystems
Daniel Vallauri (WWF, France) - Deadwood conservation and restoration in managed landscapes
Kathy Martin (University of British Columbia, Canada) - Nest webs and functional biodiversity
Ian Thompson (Canadian Forest Service) - Deadwood in the global context
Martin Moroni (Forestry Tasmania) - Deadwood functions in carbon and nutrient cycles
HIT THE ROAD WITH THE POST-SYMPOSIUM EXCURSION TO JAMES BAY.
This excursion will provide a unique opportunity to enjoy and discover Northern Quebec. Participants will travel the 620 km James Bay highway from Matagami to the town of Radisson, site of the world's largest underground generating station. Along the way, they will discover black spruce forest and taiga ecosystems, large areas affected by forest fires and a number of stops in natural and managed forests where work conducted by Quebec researchers will be discussed. The 3 day excursion also includes a visit of the Eastmain-1-A/Sarcelle/Rupert hydroelectric project and the Robert-Bourassa hydroelectric station. Cree elders in the town of Chisasibi will meet participants and provide an introduction to the Cree way of life. The tour is limited to 20 participants. Make sure they don't leave without you.
Visit our web site at http://deadwood2011.uqat.ca <http://deadwood2011.uqat.ca> for detailed information on guidelines for abstract submission, organising and scientific committees, venue, registration, and contacts. Early registration deadline is March 26, 2011.

Dear colleagues
We remind you of our web survey about the effects of forest
certification on biodiversity conservation in tropical forests. If you
did not have the time yet, we invite you to please visit
https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/V6CJBK6 and complete this survey. It
takes only ten minutes. We intend to close the survey by 15 June.
Please also share with colleagues. It is open to everyone. We are
especially keen to have more input from forest managers!
Through this anonymous survey, we try to obtain opinions and
perspectives from forest management and conservation researchers,
practitioners and other experts on the following broad topics:
*The effectiveness of certification for biodiversity conservation
*The objectives of biodiversity management in tropical forests
*Current management and certification practices
These are important topics and we want to hear your views. The more
input we get the more valuable the survey will be.
Background: The European Tropical Forest Research Network (ETFRN) plans
to issue an ETFRN News about experiences and best practices regarding
forest management certification and the conservation of forest
biodiversity. The editors of the ETFRN News (Douglas Sheil, Jack Putz
and undersigned) are conducting a brief survey to accompany the papers
contributed by authors for this news issue.
Thank you very much for your collaboration, and again we request you to
please forward to colleagues.
Best regards and many thanks for all the input!

Call for Case Study Proposals
Major Groups associated with UNFF are organizing an international workshop
on forests and are calling for case study proposals. Further details,
including information on how to submit a LOI are available in the attached
document.
Brief Background:
As part of their efforts to contribute to sustainable forest management
discussions under the auspices of UNFF, the Major Groups participating in
the UNFF process are organizing an international workshop on the theme:
Applying Sustainable Forest Management to Poverty Reduction: Strengthening
the Multi-Stakeholder Approach within the UNFF.
The workshop will take place from 26-30 July 2010 in Accra, Ghana, and is
being hosted in collaboration with the government of Ghana with support from
the UNFF Secretariat and a number of other governments.
Case studies will serve as inputs for discussions and for developing policy
recommendations. See

Dear Forum-Members,
At the Mid Sweden University in Sundsvall, Sweden, we are preparing for the PRIFOR 2010 conference August 9-13, 2010 (www.prifor2010.org<http://www.prifor2010.org/>).
PRIFOR stands for Primeval Forests and the conference has the following theme: "Northern Primeval Forests: Ecology, Conservation and Management". We would like to invite researchers, administrators and conservation managers from a wide spectrum of regions and disciplines. Some of the themes that form a base for the scientific content are:
* Old growth forests - The historical impact of man
* What is efficient protection of natural forests? - The conservation toolbox
* Restoring naturalness - a paradox or the only option in human dominated landscapes?
* Protecting natural forests in an era of climate change
* Forest disturbance dynamics - interacting disturbances and climate change
* Carbon sequestration in natural forests - sinks, sources and soils
* Biodiversity value of old-growth forest remnants: lifeboats for endangered species?
* Primeval forests as sources for genetic diversity
* Old growth elements in managed forests - waste of timber or effective conservation?
* People and old growth - ecosystem services, non-timber values and attitudes
More information can be found under: www.prifor2010.org<http://www.prifor2010.org/>. Please let me know if you have further questions as I would be happy to answer those.
