Dear Forest Entomologists and Health Specialists Everywhere,
We are pleased to make the formal announcement for the 6th North American Forest Insect Work Conference to be held in Washington D.C. from May 31 to June 3, 2016. This is a notice to have you save these dates on your calendar.
The conference theme is "Toward Healthy Forests: Leadership, Vision, and Action." The theme recognizes the host city, Washington D.C. which serves as the headquarters for federal agencies charged with managing National Forests in the U.S. The main goal of the conference will be to bring researchers, practitioners, and students in contact with agency leadership to inform each other and consider future trends and directions regarding forest health. Special emphasis will be on encouraging the use of research-based information in developing policies and actions that most benefit forest health in the face of a changing global environment. Our next generation of forest entomologists (students and post-docs) are our future leaders. Their exposure to agency leadership policy and the political environment that helps shape it will be critical in their professional development.
The Conference will be held at the Washington Marriott at Wardman Park ( <http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/wasdt-washington-marriott-wardman-par…> http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/wasdt-washington-marriott-wardman-par…)
We have arranged to contract off-season govt. per diem room rates during prime travel season.
Organizing Committees have been formed
Organizing Committee: Scott Salom ( <mailto:salom@vt.edu> salom(a)vt.edu) - Chair; Bob Rabaglia ( <mailto:brabaglia@fs.fed.us> brabaglia(a)fs.fed.us) and Kier Klepzig ( <mailto:kklepzig@fs.fed.us> kklepzig(a)fs.fed.us) - members

The conference will be managed in association with Continuing and Professional Education at Virginia Tech. This group specializes in planning conferences such as ours.
We hope to have a website running soon to help facilitate information about the conference. Timely announcements will be made before long to get your input into developing a program. We will also provide details on registration, signing up for field trips, and booking reservations.
Please contact the organizers if you have any questions or suggestions.

Subject: EU COST Action FP1002 PERMIT Final Conference - CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS
Dear Colleagues,
The EU COST Action FP1002 PERMIT deals with invasive organisms and their association with pathways for international transfer. The Action has been running for over 3 years with particular concentration on the live Plants for Planting pathway. We are now in the final year of the Action and during the final week of October this year will be having a conference to summarise the work of PERMIT and to interact with others in this field. The location will be Estoril (near Lisbon) in Portugal and the local organiser is Dr Edmundo Sousa.
We have a relatively limited number of places at the venue (around 70 participants) and are now publicising the meeting (see attached) and would encourage you to consider contributing to it. Depending on the applicants location and the subject matter of the presentation, there is a possibility of providing financial support for travel and accommodation (EU COST rules restrict the geographic locations that can be supported). Applicants from Argentina, New Zealand and South Africa may be able to apply for funds in those countries since they have signed up to COST and guaranteed some funding for travel to COST meetings.
I look forward to hearing from you and, hopefully, to meeting some of you at the conference in October.
With best wishes,
Hugh Evans

Quantitative Ecologist - 2 year Research Position
Montana State University (MSU) and U.S. Forest Service, Rocky Mountain Research Station (RMRS) in Bozeman, Montana seek a motivated quantitative ecologist to join a multi-disciplinary effort examining effects of climate change and mountain pine beetle disturbance on vegetation structure and composition, fire dynamics, and habitat suitability of selected woodpecker species. Synergistic interactions of climate, mountain pine beetle and wildfire are likely to catalyze landscape-scale changes in vegetation distributions, forest structure, and wildlife habitat suitability.
Job description: Primary work will be linking models of an ecosystem process, including a fire model, with a model of mountain pine beetle demography, with a model of wildlife habitat suitability. The linked models will allow for tracking tree and stand-level mortality in response to climate change and mountain pine beetle disturbance, and the associated interactions with fire, land management activities, and wildlife habitat suitability. The job will be located at RMRS on the MSU campus, Bozeman, MT and the successful candidate will be expected to spend work-time among Bozeman, Logan, UT, and Missoula, MT. Duties include acquiring, analyzing, and managing large climate databases; integrating models of mountain pine beetle demographics, fire, and avian demographics; analyzing spatial and tabular modeling results; manuscript preparation and publication; and oral presentations at workshops and scientific meetings.
Qualifications: The applicant should have: (1) a Ph.D. focused on applied mathematical modeling or biostatistics in ecology or natural resources, or sufficient research experience to perform required tasks; (2) excellent quantitative skills; (3) a demonstrated ability to publish in peer-reviewed journals; and (4) strong motivation to work independently and as a team member. The successful applicant is preferred to have strong interest and skills in computer modeling. Ideally, the candidate will have experience in use of C and Matlab programming, and extensive database management skills. Experience with spatial data manipulation (e.g., ArcGis and/or ERDAS) and statistical (R) software, and associated programs (e.g., Python) are also strongly desired. Importantly, the candidate will have a background in ecology or natural resources.
Send CV, statement of interest, reference list, cover letter, and copies of 3 relevant publications to Dr. Victoria Saab at vsaab(a)fs.fed.us. For more information contact Dr. Saab, Dr. Barbara Bentz (bbentz(a)fs.fed.us) or Dr. Rachel Loehman (rloehman(a)fs.fed.us) and see websites http://www.rmrs.nau.edu/wildlife/birdsandburns/; www.usu.edu/beetle; and http://www.firelab.org/cfdg.

Colleagues,
The IUFRO All-Division 5 Conference is held every 5 years. It is an apolitical, international forum open to all nations, for conduct of the Division’s business, and for exchange of scientific, professional and technical information on forest products related subjects consistent with the Division's structure.
Division 5 is currently soliciting bids for the 2017 All-Division 5 conference. If you and your institution are willing to host this conference, please visit the Guidelines and Bidding Rules at http://www.iufro.org/download/file/9492/2068/all-d5-2017-guidelines-bidding… for further details.

Dear stakeholder in ?forest ecosystems?
5 minutes - 7 questions
Provide your view on forest ecosystem visions and ecosystem services.
We would be very grateful if you or someone from your organization could
spend 5 minutes answering 7 questions related to ?Ecosystem visions?
within forestry and ecosystem services from forests.
The questions can be accessed at this link: -
https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/5JXS2ZP
We are an EU-ESFRI preparation project ANAEE (www.anaee.com) working to
prepare a common experimental research infrastructure in terrestrial and
aquatic ecosystems Europe to investigate impacts and responses of
ecosystems to environmental changes and pressures.
Such an infrastructure will include facilities of relevance to forest
ecosystems.
In order to guide the way we plan such an infrastructure, it will be very
helpful to know how different stakeholders related to forest ecosystems:
view the threats to forest ecosystem services
the potential support which could be obtained from experimental research.
We believe that you or your organization can provide an important input to
our work and would be very grateful for your contribution.
Thank you in advance
