<p>In Season 3<i> </i>of<i> Branching out: the forest podcast</i>, we explore how scientists in IUFRO collaborate across disciplines to tackle emerging topics through Task Forces. We continue the Season with the topic of <i>innovation</i> and the <i>Task Force on Scaling-Up Science-based Forest Sector Innovation.</i><br /><br />Host <i>Gerda Wolfrum</i> from IUFRO HQ and co-host <i>Leila Rossa Mouawad </i>from the American University of Beirut, Lebanon, and Deputy Coordinator of IUFRO's Communication Working Party, spoke with Task Force co-leads <i>Lyndall Bull</i>, an Australian forester with expertise in innovation and the bioeconomy trained at the University of Melbourne, and <i>Rajat Panwar</i>, a professor of responsible and sustainable business at Oregon State University, USA. They emphasized the importance of supporting the scaling up of science‑based innovation in the forest sector by raising awareness, strengthening education and communication, and promoting collaboration and partnerships among multiple stakeholders.<br /><br /><strong>Why is innovation important?</strong> The world's forests face growing pressure mainly from climate‑related stresses while demand for wood and non‑wood products continues to rise. To keep forests healthy, resilient, and able to provide essential goods and services, innovation is vital. It is important to understand that innovation comes in a variety of forms, from technological and digital advances to improved forest and land management practices, as well as social, policy, institutional and financial innovations. However, whatever form it takes, innovation in the forest sector ultimately aims to enhance the economic, environmental, and social performance of forest-based systems.<br /><br /><strong>What is the role of science?</strong> Lyndall highlighted the critical role of science in scaling up innovation, stressing that <i>"Science provides for us the foundational knowledge that we need to understand all the different aspects of the forests and the forest sector. This evidence base is essential for ensuring that the innovations that we develop, be they technological, be they forest management or governance, are both effective but also inclusive and that they're also sustainable. We can't do this without science."</i><br /><br /><strong>Are there any regional differences?</strong> Rajat elaborated on regional differences in innovation and stressed that, "<i>Meaningful innovation in the forest sector must flow in both directions. That is not only from the Global North to the Global South, but between the Global North and the Global South. <p>In our new <i>Season 3 of Branching out: the forest podcast</i>, we explore how scientists collaborate across disciplines to tackle emerging topics. This work happens through IUFRO Task Forces. We kick off the Season with the topic of <strong>bioeconomy</strong> and the <i>Task Force on Building an Integrated Vision of the Forest-Based Sector within a Bioeconomy</i>.<br /><br />Host <strong>Gerda Wolfrum</strong> and co-host <strong>Fernanda Gonzalez</strong> from IUFRO HQ spoke with <strong>Ivana Živojinović</strong>, a senior scientist at BOKU University in Vienna (Institute of Forest, Environmental and Natural Resource Policy and the Center for Bioeconomy), and <strong>Ricardo Vargas Carpintero</strong>, who recently completed his PhD at the University of Hohenheim, Germany and is now based in Colombia. They shared their insights on how the forest-based sector can contribute to a bioeconomy.<br /><br />The concept of bioeconomy is not new, but it has broadened into a more holistic framing that connects the ways how we produce, how we use and value biological resources within larger sustainability goals. The aim is to provide sustainable solutions across different economic sectors, by shifting from fossil-based inputs and linear economical models towards circular and regenerative systems. <br /><br />Ivana explained, "<i>This includes aspects of reuse, recycling, using resource efficiency, and ensuring that value creation does not come at the expense of biodiversity, of water or even people's rights and livelihoods</i>." Bioeconomy is not a single model; countries and regions emphasize different pathways.<br /><br />In this context, Ricardo talked about the situation in Latin America where biodiversity plays a key role. He said, <i>"Incorporating biodiversity in the bioeconomy to create economic value and contribute to the environment, for example, by restoring degraded lands or providing ecosystem services such as carbon sequestration, is one of these visions that is quite important in the Latin American context."</i> <br /><br />The forest-based sector is integral to a bioeconomy, but its scope is still quite narrow and mainly focused on timber, fiber and carbon. To make the scope of the forest sector within a bioeconomy broader and multifunctional, further innovation - not only technical or technological innovation, also institutional, organizational and social innovation – is required. In addition, cooperation between policymakers, public sector, primary producers, industry, and society must be enhanced. As Ivana pointed out, "<i>Bioeconomy transition as such will be successful only if it's coherent and inclusive and really grounded in diversity. A Canada Impact+ Research Chair is one of the most prestigious international awards globally, providing Chairholders and their research teams with an award of up to $8 million over eight years ($1 million per year). In addition, there is potential for a four-year extension at 50% of the initial award value per year. This extension will be determined by an external review of the award in Year 7.
Successful nominees will be expected to start their position at the University of Manitoba within 12 months of accepting the award. The successful candidate will be appointed to a full-time tenured position at the rank of Full Professor, or at the rank of Associate Professor with an opportunity to apply for promotion to Full Professor within two years of starting their appointment. Salary will be based on the candidate’s qualifications and experience, in accordance with the University of Manitoba Faculty Association (UMFA) collective agreement. The position will be provided with a start-up package and opportunities to compete for additional equipment funding through the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI).
The focus of this position is climate-related disasters and risks, and their management, governance, and/or community resilience. The research should result in transformational and translational impacts on Canada and beyond.
While this is a research-intensive position, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to teach and mentor undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate students in the Institute, Faculty, and the University.
Only candidates who are internationally based (both working and residing outside of Canada) at the time of the intake’s application deadline are eligible to apply.
Expected start date of appointment: Within 12 months of the award date (September 2026).

Research scientist permanent position on the effect of microbiota on tree health

Dear colleagues,
It’s now official! The Department of Tree-Microbe Interactions at the
INRAE Grand Est Nancy Centre is offering a research scientist permanent
position on the effect of microbiota on tree health.
This position will involve studying the role of tree microbiota in
interactions between trees and forest pathogenic fungi, with the aim of
contributing new knowledge on the emergence of forest diseases. If you
are passionate about tree health, microbial community ecology and the
study of plant microbiota, this position should be of interest to you.
The Department of Tree-Microbe Interactions is a unit of around 100
people from INRAE and the University of Lorraine. It is a dynamic unit
committed to scientific topics with societal implications. We have
state-of-the-art equipment and international partnerships. The unit is
ideally located in Champenoux, near Nancy, 1.5 hours from Paris by TGV
train, close to the Vosges Mountains, Alsace, Luxembourg, Belgium,
Germany and Switzerland.
