Managing stand structure to restore mixed oak-dominated forests for conservation of biodiversity

Oak-dominated forests are widespread in Eurasia and North America, supporting high biodiversity and providing important ecosystem services. However, decreasing oak dominance and oak regeneration failure are occurring worldwide, putting oak-associated biodiversity and ecosystem services at risk. Not much is known about the stand structures and light conditions necessary for promoting natural regeneration of oak. This knowledge gap causing problems for cost-effective forest management in oak forests valued for conservation. Our international project (Sweden-Spain-USA) aims to discover stand development pathways that lead to oak dominance in mixed broadleaf stands of ranging site productivities. This will be accomplished with well-replicated field studies designed to define relationships between stand structure, light availability and growth of oak regeneration. The research is organized with supervision from specialists in ecology, eco-physiology, conservation, silviculture and tree growth. An external reference group from forestry and nature conservation will participate.
Qualifications:
We are looking for a strongly motivated candidate with an MSc degree in ecology, environmental sciences, forestry or equivalent. Excellent written and spoken English is essential, as well as the ability to work both independently and in a team. A valid drivers’ license is required.

IUFRO Prague Conference - 20-24 September, 2021

With great optimism, the Scientific Organizing Committee would like to
announce the new dates of 20-24 September, 2021 for the IUFRO conference,
"Biological Invasions in Forests: Trade, Ecology and Management" to be held
in Prague, Czech Republic. This is a joint meeting of IUFRO units:
7.03.12 - Alien Invasive Species and International Trade
7.03.07 - Population Dynamics of Forest Insects
8.02.04 - Ecology of Alien Invasives
The conference is hosted by the Czech University of Life Sciences Prague
Beginning in February we will accept submissions of abstracts for oral and
poster presentations on topics including:
- Invasions of non-native insects, tree pathogens, plants and other
organisms in forest ecosystems
- The role of trade and travel as pathways for invasions
- Ecology and impact of non-native species in forests
- Management of invasions / biosecurity

We are contacting you to let you know about an upcoming webinar series. This series is co-hosted by the working parties 7.03.05 (Ecology and Management of Bark and Woodboring Insects) and 7.03.16 (Behavioural and Chemical Ecology of Forest Insects) and will focus on the Behavioural and Chemical Ecology of Bark and Woodboring Insects.
The format of the talks will include a short introductory talk by the webinar coordinator (5-10 min) followed by 2-3 short research talks (45-50 minutes total) and concluding with an open discussion period with the speakers (ca. 25 min) so that the total length of each webinar will be ca. 90 minutes. The series starts on January 21 with a webinar on "Plant defense and biotic and abiotic stressors" coordinated by Dr. Nadir Erbilgin (see the full list of webinars with dates below):
