Dear colleague,
As many of you will know, the number of emerging pests and diseases of woody plants (i.e. species that have never previously been recorded outside their native continent) is continuously increasing. Early warning of these potential invaders before they arrive can be based on surveys of sentinel plantings and nurseries, and of arboreta. However, such surveys will necessarily face the presence of organisms and symptoms that have never been observed before by the surveyors.
To facilitate the identification of the most likely causal agents of damage to woody plants in situations where the exact identity of such agents is unknown, a field guide for the identification of damage on woody sentinel plants has now been published. This guide is intended as an aid for managers of sentinel plantings, botanical gardens or arboreta, as well as phytosanitary inspectors, who may have knowledge of common pests and diseases of woody plants, but may not know the likely cause of damage that they have not encountered before. It aims to provide a tentative identification of relatively broad groups of organisms and not definitive identification of the causal agents.
There are chapters that explain how to use the guide, followed by keys (for different organs of conifer and broadleaf species) to guide the user to the relevant sections of the book, based on the questions entomologists and pathologists ask themselves when looking at a damaged or diseased tree in a fashion similar to how a doctor interrogates a patient to arrive at a diagnosis. The largest part of the book is devoted to the description and illustration of damage types and typical causes of the observed damage.
The book is an output of COST Action FP1401 - A global network of nurseries as early warning system against alien tree pests - "Global Warning" (www.ibles.pl/cost<http://www.ibles.pl/cost>).

Dear friends and colleagues,
In just a few days many of you will be at the 125th Anniversary IUFRO Congress and participate in sessions of Division 7 (Forest Health). There will be numerous sessions sponsored by Division 7 Working Parties and Research Groups (all starting with "D7"), and we will have two sessions with sub-plenary speakers (Barbara Bentz, Treena Burgess, Andrea Battisti and Bill Manning).
Two of the sub-plenary presentations will be given in the 'Division 7 Opening Session' at 8:00 am on Monday morning (18 Sept.) in the main room of the concert hall (Rolf Böhme Saal (Konzerthaus Freiburg).
The other two sub-plenary presentations will be given in the session 'Forest health - critical global issues in the 21st century' on Thursday (21 Sept.), 13:30 - 15:00 in room KG II - Auditorium Maximum of the University of Freiburg.
We will also have a business meeting where you will have the opportunity to meet and discuss with Div. 7 coordinators and deputies, learn about upcoming meetings, and propose meetings and conferences that you would like to organise. The business meetings will take place on Tuesday (19 Sept.) from 20:00 h (8 pm) in room KG I - 1199 (Uni Freiburg). This will be followed by a business meeting of RG 7.03 (Entomology) from 21:00 (9 pm) in KG I - 1139 (Uni Freiburg).
There has been much interest in the social event on Monday evening (18 Sept.). We have just reached maximum capacity (140 people) at the venue, and those who registered for it (by email to me) will shortly receive instructions on how to find it. There is a possibility that some will not come, so if you are still interested in joining us for this, please get in touch with me (eckehard.brockerhoff(a)scionresearch.com<mailto:eckehard.brockerhoff@scionresearch.com>).
Also, attached to this email is a report on recent and planned activities and meetings, and changes in coordinators in Div. 7. It includes a special thanks to Jolanda Roux who recently resigned from her position as coordinator of Research Group 7.02 (Pathology). Former deputy Tod Ramsfield has been appointed as the new coordinator, and Beccy Ganley and Julio Diez Casero are the new deputies.

We are pleased to announce the joint VKM & EFSA Symposium "Advancing Environmental Risk Assessment by Accounting for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services as Protection Goals", which will be held in Oslo, Norway, on 26th - 27th October 2017.
How can we derive operational protection goals for use in environmental risk assessments? This question will be addressed at the Symposium where EFSA's latest guidance on making protection goals operational will be presented. The Symposium also aims at fostering dialogue and cooperation on protection goals between risk assessors and risk managers. The Symposium will include presentations from international speakers, as well as a panel discussion with representatives from environmental and food safety Agencies in the Nordic Zone.

Social evening on 18 Sept.
Thanks very much to all those who already replied previously. We can confirm that this will go ahead on Monday, 18 Sept. 2017, starting from about 7:30 or 8:00 pm / 19:30 or 20:00 hrs.
There will be a change to a nicer venue. This is in a suburb of Freiburg that can be reached easily by tram (a 10-minute tram ride, with a tram leaving every 10 minutes; more details to come in the next few days).
This promises to be a very nice opportunity to socialise in the beer garden outdoors or in the hall inside (depending on the weather). There will be local beers and other drinks available, including non-alcoholic drinks, as well as dinner, including several affordable options. Dr Horst Delb, a local forest entomologist, is kindly helping organise this. Please note, this is not restricted to presenters; anyone interested in the Forest Health Division and their partners and friends can come along.
