WANGARI MAATHAI "FOREST CHAMPIONS" AWARD - ANNOUNCEMENT OF 2019 AWARDS
You are invited to nominate a candidate for the 2019 CPF Wangari Maathai
"Forest Champions" Award by 10 May! This is a unique opportunity to
acknowledge an inspiring individual who has improved our forests and the
lives of people that depend on them.
The Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF) is awarding one extraordinary
individual for improving our forests and the lives of people who depend on
them!
The CPF launched the first Wangari Maathai Award in 2012 to honour and
commemorate the impact of this extraordinary woman who championed forest
issues around the world. In 2019, the CPF will award another individual for
her/his outstanding achievements for forests.
The awardee will receive a cash prize of USD20,000 along with international
recognition of the outstanding contributions to preserve, restore and
sustainably manage forests and to raise awareness of the key role forests
play in supporting local communities, rural livelihoods, women, youth and
the environment.
The Wangari Maathai Award is an initiative of CBD, CIFOR, CITES, FAO, GEF,
ICRAF, ITTO, IUCN, IUFRO, UNCCD, UNDP, UNEP, UNFCCC, UNFF and World Bank,
all members of the CPF. Nominations will be reviewed by an international
jury of renowned personalities, who will also take into consideration such
elements as empowering women, youth and civil society, fostering social
commitment, promoting networks and improving the valuation of forests in
society.
Eligibility: Applicants should be nominated by a third party. Nominees may
be persons, living or recently deceased, who have made exceptional
contributions to forests. Professional and research contributions will only
be considered if they are conducted outside of normal work-related
responsibilities. Applications received from a nominee's kin or business
partner are not eligible for consideration. Applications related to
grassroots initiatives are particularly encouraged.
Selection: The closing date for receipt of nominations is 10 May 2019. The
awardee will be selected by a jury nominated by CPF members, which will take
into account gender and regional balance when considering potential
awardees.
Announcement: The awardee will be notified of their selection via email in
mid-August 2019. This year's Wangari Maathai Award will be presented on 30
September 2019, at the XXV IUFRO World Congress to be held at Expo Unimed on
29 September - 5 October 2019 in Curitiba, Brazil.
To submit an application: Please send completed nominations to the CPF
Secretariat at cpf(a)un.org. The attached guidelines should be used when
submitting your nomination.

Objet : Proposal for a Recruitment Mentoring Programme
Dear Jens Peter, Yousry, Woodam, Jean-Luc, Pekka, Tuija, Eckehard, Sandra and Daniella,
I have some very good news! A most uplifting matter that I would like to ask your opinions about. It is a follow up on our discussions at the previous Board Meeting in Corvallis that included renewal of Officeholders and possibly establishing ‘’Junior Officeholder’’ positions in the IUFRO structure.
Here is the good news: Two very experienced members of the International Forestry Students’ Association (IFSA), Sarah Dickson-Hoyle and Johannes (Joost) de Koning, will be leading the mentorship program at the IUFRO World Congress in Curitiba. They have proposed the following three levels of mentoring:
1. Event based mentoring (pairing youth and students with experienced IFSA members at the congress)
2. Content mentoring: whereby youth participants (mentees) that have a primary interest in the scientific content of the congress are paired with more experienced scientists at the congress (mentors)
3. Recruitment mentoring: where early career scientists (mentees) that have an interest in both the scientific content of the congress and the inner workings of IUFRO are paired with IUFRO division members (mentors).
A short description of the intent and activities proposed for recruitment mentoring is as follows:
Learning opportunities:
· Get to know/explain the workings of an IUFRO Division.
· Expand the network into junior/senior scientists with similar interests.
· First line experience of new developments within the scientific field of interest from a junior/senior perspective.
Proposed activities:
· Division members and interested mentees exchange professional profiles (before the event: online).
· Kick off- of permanent mentoring programme within one or several IUFRO divisions. Meet and greet with the interested mentees and the Divisions (at the event).
· Mentees and Divisions keep in touch for a year, during which the mentees are part of the information exchange and possibly meetings within the Division (after the event).
Since this proposed Recruitment Mentoring Programme would require engagement and long term cooperation from IUFRO Officeholders, it would be good to have an understanding of the level of interest and support from current Officeholders, and to harmonise this activity with any other plans before proceeding with implementing the mentorship program.
Therefore, please share your opinions with me and give an indication of:
1. if you would be willing to participate as a mentor in such a ‘’recruitment mentoring programme’’ if it was offered at Curitiba?
2. If you feel that a general approach to advertising (e.g. sending congress attendees an e-mail about the three types of mentoring at the Congress, including a link to register for the Curitiba mentorship program) is suitable for recruitment mentoring, or should it be supplemented by a more targeted approach to attract the involvement of current (or outgoing) officeholders?
3. If you would be willing to set aside a little bit of time and agree to be contacted by Sarah and Joost?
4. If you would be interested in taking on a roll related to pairing mentors and mentees?
I look forward to your responses. Quick ones are greatly appreciated, but the generous request is to let me know what you think before Friday evening, April 12 :)
Best wishes
/Björn

Objet : IUFRO report & News
Dear friends and colleagues from IUFRO Division 8, I wish you all a
fantastic year full of great adventures and happiness!
We do have this year our WC Congress in Curitiba and good work ahead, so
this will be a quite busy year with also important decisions to take. We
will need to restructure the leadership of our Division in terms of deputy
coordinators and also changes in WPs and Research Themes. We will have in
Curitiba the meeting for Division 8 that will allow us to agreed and approve
all the planned changes that will be discussing in the following month.
For now, we need first to complete the report of activities for this past
year that was extremely rich for our Division so please send me before
February 5 all reports and photos in relation to activities, meetings,
workshops, publication directly associated to IUFRO that you coordinated
and/or supported. This deadline will give me the time needed to assemble
all information and also evaluate the strong topics that most impact had
this past year within our Division. This will provide us with the material
needed to ground our exchange and our strategy as a Division incorporating
more actively all WPs coordinators (which is not the case at present I am
afraid )
I will be waiting then for you inputs, I would like also to organize a skype
or similar for the end of February to discuss several issues I will send a
doodle soon to find a convenient date
I would like also to remind you to spread the voice regarding the deadline
extension for the IUFRO WC we count on all of you for a successful WC in
Curitiba this year
Looking forward for your inputs with my warmest wishes
Sandra

Betreff: 1st Announcement of ACID RAIN 2020
Dear colleagues in Division 8
I am pleased to inform you that the 10th International Conference on Acid Deposition, ACID RAIN 2020, will be held in Niigata, Japan, from 19 to 23 October 2020. On behalf of the Scientific Steering Committee and the International Scientific Advisory Committee for Acid Rain 2020, I send you herein the first circular of the conference. Please find the file attached. The conference webpage is already open at:
https://www.acidrain2020.org
As you can see on the conference webpage above, IUFRO is listed as one of the co-organizers of the conference. Many of colleagues from RG 7.01.00 are involved in the preparation of the conference. The conference is entitled “ACID RAIN 2020: The Future Environment and Role of Multiple Air Pollutants”, which covers issues not only specific to acid rain but also a wide range of scientific topics relating to various air pollutants, including ozone, particulate matters, etc. Relationship between air pollution and climate change is also within the scope.
Therefore, direct/indirect effects of various environmental factors on forest ecosystems will be discussed in the conference.
We would appreciate it if you and your colleagues consider the possibility of attending the conference.
See you in Niigata, Japan, in 2020!
