Dear Unit Coordinators, dear Colleagues:
cc: Unit Deputy Coordinators (for information only)
cc: Division Coordinators
The IUFRO World Congress is an opportunity for Research Groups and Working Parties not only to present their scientific results, but also to meet and discuss administrative matters. Therefore, also during the 2019 Congress in Curitiba, time slots for administrative meetings (former "business sessions") of Research Groups and Working Parties will be available.
Dates and timeslots
Sessions will be held on Tuesday, 1st, Wednesday 2nd, Friday 4th and Saturday 5th of October over the lunch break from 12:00 to 12:50 or 13:00 to 13:50 (two 50-minute blocks) and also in the evening on Tuesday 1st and Wednesday 2nd from 17:30 to 18:20 or 18:30 to 19:20 (two 50-minute blocks). If more time (beyond 50 minutes) is needed, please indicate that in your request. Requests are accepted on a first come, first serve basis. Request forms must be completed and returned by 10 June 2019.
We would like to inform you that in addition to these administrative meetings (former "business sessions"), each Division has a fixed time slot to meet for 2.0 hrs. on Friday, 4 October 17:30 – 19:30 hrs.
How to make a reservation for administrative sessions
Reservation is now open and ends on 10 June 2019.
Research Group and Working Party Coordinators are requested to fill in the online reservation form at https://forms.gle/2Sx3wcsHRxyorFGD9, indicating a first and a second choice for the preferred date and time for their administrative meeting (former "business session").
Please note that catering can be provided upon request, but related costs have to be borne by the respective Unit.
Units that might not have succeeded in making their reservation due to potential constraints in meeting rooms will be put on a waiting list. Should a booked slot be given up by another Unit, it will be allocated to a Unit on the waiting list (first come, first serve). However, experience from previous Congresses has shown that many Units will be represented only by a few scientists. For these Units we would like to strongly recommend to hold their administrative meetings in a more informal setting.
Best regards
Alexander

WANGARI MAATHAI "FOREST CHAMPIONS" AWARD - ANNOUNCEMENT OF 2019 AWARDS
You are invited to nominate a candidate for the 2019 CPF Wangari Maathai
"Forest Champions" Award by 10 May! This is a unique opportunity to
acknowledge an inspiring individual who has improved our forests and the
lives of people that depend on them.
The Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF) is awarding one extraordinary
individual for improving our forests and the lives of people who depend on
them!
The CPF launched the first Wangari Maathai Award in 2012 to honour and
commemorate the impact of this extraordinary woman who championed forest
issues around the world. In 2019, the CPF will award another individual for
her/his outstanding achievements for forests.
The awardee will receive a cash prize of USD20,000 along with international
recognition of the outstanding contributions to preserve, restore and
sustainably manage forests and to raise awareness of the key role forests
play in supporting local communities, rural livelihoods, women, youth and
the environment.
The Wangari Maathai Award is an initiative of CBD, CIFOR, CITES, FAO, GEF,
ICRAF, ITTO, IUCN, IUFRO, UNCCD, UNDP, UNEP, UNFCCC, UNFF and World Bank,
all members of the CPF. Nominations will be reviewed by an international
jury of renowned personalities, who will also take into consideration such
elements as empowering women, youth and civil society, fostering social
commitment, promoting networks and improving the valuation of forests in
society.
Eligibility: Applicants should be nominated by a third party. Nominees may
be persons, living or recently deceased, who have made exceptional
contributions to forests. Professional and research contributions will only
be considered if they are conducted outside of normal work-related
responsibilities. Applications received from a nominee's kin or business
partner are not eligible for consideration. Applications related to
grassroots initiatives are particularly encouraged.
Selection: The closing date for receipt of nominations is 10 May 2019. The
awardee will be selected by a jury nominated by CPF members, which will take
into account gender and regional balance when considering potential
awardees.
Announcement: The awardee will be notified of their selection via email in
mid-August 2019. This year's Wangari Maathai Award will be presented on 30
September 2019, at the XXV IUFRO World Congress to be held at Expo Unimed on
29 September - 5 October 2019 in Curitiba, Brazil.
To submit an application: Please send completed nominations to the CPF
Secretariat at cpf(a)un.org. The attached guidelines should be used when
submitting your nomination.

Objet : Proposal for a Recruitment Mentoring Programme
Dear Jens Peter, Yousry, Woodam, Jean-Luc, Pekka, Tuija, Eckehard, Sandra and Daniella,
I have some very good news! A most uplifting matter that I would like to ask your opinions about. It is a follow up on our discussions at the previous Board Meeting in Corvallis that included renewal of Officeholders and possibly establishing ‘’Junior Officeholder’’ positions in the IUFRO structure.
Here is the good news: Two very experienced members of the International Forestry Students’ Association (IFSA), Sarah Dickson-Hoyle and Johannes (Joost) de Koning, will be leading the mentorship program at the IUFRO World Congress in Curitiba. They have proposed the following three levels of mentoring:
1. Event based mentoring (pairing youth and students with experienced IFSA members at the congress)
2. Content mentoring: whereby youth participants (mentees) that have a primary interest in the scientific content of the congress are paired with more experienced scientists at the congress (mentors)
3. Recruitment mentoring: where early career scientists (mentees) that have an interest in both the scientific content of the congress and the inner workings of IUFRO are paired with IUFRO division members (mentors).
A short description of the intent and activities proposed for recruitment mentoring is as follows:
Learning opportunities:
· Get to know/explain the workings of an IUFRO Division.
· Expand the network into junior/senior scientists with similar interests.
· First line experience of new developments within the scientific field of interest from a junior/senior perspective.
Proposed activities:
· Division members and interested mentees exchange professional profiles (before the event: online).
· Kick off- of permanent mentoring programme within one or several IUFRO divisions. Meet and greet with the interested mentees and the Divisions (at the event).
· Mentees and Divisions keep in touch for a year, during which the mentees are part of the information exchange and possibly meetings within the Division (after the event).
Since this proposed Recruitment Mentoring Programme would require engagement and long term cooperation from IUFRO Officeholders, it would be good to have an understanding of the level of interest and support from current Officeholders, and to harmonise this activity with any other plans before proceeding with implementing the mentorship program.
Therefore, please share your opinions with me and give an indication of:
1. if you would be willing to participate as a mentor in such a ‘’recruitment mentoring programme’’ if it was offered at Curitiba?
2. If you feel that a general approach to advertising (e.g. sending congress attendees an e-mail about the three types of mentoring at the Congress, including a link to register for the Curitiba mentorship program) is suitable for recruitment mentoring, or should it be supplemented by a more targeted approach to attract the involvement of current (or outgoing) officeholders?
3. If you would be willing to set aside a little bit of time and agree to be contacted by Sarah and Joost?
4. If you would be interested in taking on a roll related to pairing mentors and mentees?
I look forward to your responses. Quick ones are greatly appreciated, but the generous request is to let me know what you think before Friday evening, April 12 :)
Best wishes
/Björn
