_Rising tree mortality in the Anthropocene_
_Abstract_: Tree mortality is rising in most documented locations but
the drivers and mechanisms of this trend are unknown. Changes in
atmospheric carbon dioxide, temperature, and vapor pressure deficit,
along with drought, are primary potential drivers. Mechanisms linking
these drivers to mortality include water, carbon, and pathogen defense
processes. These processes are interdependent such that failure of one
can lead to failure of the others. Prediction of future mortality is
challenged by our understanding of the mechanisms, however, some
evidence suggests the growing mortality rates are likely to continue
well into the future. I conclude by reviewing the numerous challenges
and opportunities for predicting future tree mortality.
_Nate is a senior scientist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory._
He has studied tree mortality since the early 2000s, focusing on
mechanisms and prediction.

Join IBFRA on Thursday, April 22nd for the first of three webinars on integrating climate change science in resource management in the boreal biome. The goal of this series is to provide a reference and to sparkle discussions in preparation of the 2021 IBFRA conference (https://sites.google.com/alaska.edu/ibfra2021/home-page ) coming up this summer (August 16-20 2021) and entitled “A changing boreal biome: assessing vulnerability and resilience of boreal ecosystems and their socio-economical implications”.
For this first webinar, Pr. Merritt Turetsky, director of the Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research at the University of Colorado Boulder, will discuss ecological legacies in taiga ecosystems in the context of permafrost thaw. To register for this free webinar, please fill out this form (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScECFUYmFa55z64WhwLUARi_CgZaKyPkim… ) . Once registered, we will send you the information on how to join the webinar a few days prior to the event.
The second webinar of this series will focus on the requirements and challenges of sustainable forest management in a changing boreal biome with Pr. John Innes, Forest Renewal BC Chair in Forest Management at the University of British Columbia, Canada. This webinar is scheduled for May 20, 2021, 10 AM PST, 1:00 PM EST, 7:00 PM CET. The third and last webinar will focus on the co-production of knowledge process (contributors and date TBD).

Join the e-list for IUFRO Working Party 4.02.01 Resource Data in the Tropics

Betreff: Join the e-list for IUFRO Working Party 4.02.01 Resource Data in the Tropics
Dear Colleagues:
You are invited to join the e-list for IUFRO Working Party 4.02.01 Resource Data in the Tropics, at https://lists.iufro.org/mailman/listinfo/wp40201/ We are focusing the unit on the discovery, curation, and use of legacy tropical forest datasets.
Much legacy data for tropical forests, including inventory and plot data, are in danger of being lost. Many tropical forest projects over the years have generated data, but the information is scattered among different institutions and people, some still only on paper, some digitized but in older formats.
These legacy datasets are invaluable for understanding how tropical forests change through time, including the cumulative impacts of land use and climate, and changes in patterns of biodiversity. change in land use and climate, and changes in patterns of biodiversity and carbon storage. Many of the forests represented in historical datasets no longer exist, so these data are the only record of the natural vegetation of the area.
There is also a need to develop a set of standard descriptive metadata, or a metadata scheme, for describing these datasets. This would assist not only with recovering and describing old data sets, but also ensure that future datasets can be consistently described and that their loss can be avoided in the future.
The first step is to review datasets referred to in older meta databases (e.g., ATROFI-UK and TROPIS) to determine if they are still available, and if they are in need of updated electronic curation. We are also reaching out via electronic media and networks, to find additional legacy tropical datasets and information on these studies. The next steps will be to develop an updated metadatabase regarding these datasets, develop with stakeholders policy on ownership and appropriate use, seek funding, and electronically curate such datasets.
We invite your participation in the e-list to discuss these and related topics.

IUFRO - DIVISION 8 - FOREST ENVIRONMENT FB GROUP
by Sandra LUQUE
Dear all,
I do have the great pleasure to announce a new FB group dedicated to share
information for the IUFRO Division 8. Thanks to our communication officers
for the Division, Alessio Collalti with the support of Jean Luc Maeght (both
in cc), for setting up this Group. The success of the group and the
improvement in our communication channels depend on the effort of each
member of the Division including all the colleagues, young researchers,
students, experts, stakeholders that we can invite. The group is Public but
everybody needs to make a request to become a member an administrator
needs to approve members and posts (we will take care of this)
The aim of this FB Group is to improve communication within the Division
and beyond while sharing NEWS, publications, events related to forest
management and planning, including conservation of forested areas, wildlife,
soil sciences, forested landscapes and landscape ecology, conservation
biology, biodiversity, and physical environment. We particularly welcome
inputs towards a deeper understanding of hazards and disturbances which
could affect forest dynamics, such as fire, climate change, pollution and
winds.
You can share links to webinars and other related events. You can also feed
this site with relevant related information from others FB sites.
Looking forward to a dynamic exchange to enhance our knowledge and awareness
on the importance of forests and the environment
The Group is for the Division to make use of it, so please become a member
and share the link:

of Forests so please use the opportunity to begin sharing information
Looking forward to your inputs
My warmest wishes to all

In 2021, the world’s forests are at a turning point. Although deforestation has decreased since 1990 according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), it still continues to rage (10 M Km2/year).
As you may know, the Global Forest Summit, a Conference gathering Leaders of International Organizations, national and local Governments, Leaders from the private sector and NGOs, will be hosted on March 12th. Considering the future of Forests as central in the fight against climate change and willing to protect biodiversity and wildlife, Speakers will share their views and inputs to advocate for significant actions and measures as this year marks the start of the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. The Global Forest Summit will act as the curator of a global conversation that is needed to spark concrete actions and mobilize cross-border throught leadership, collaboration and resources. It is still time to register: together, let’s put the future of Forests in the international Agenda for the next ten years.
The conference will take place live on March 12, 2021, from 9:00–19:00 CET for the opening panel, five roundtables and the closing panel led by experts and decision makers, such as:
