International Tree Mortality Network seminar series: Dr. NATE MCDOWELL - Rising tree mortality in the Anthropocene
by Henrik Hartmann
Dear all,
The International Tree Mortality Network, an initiative of the IUFRO
task force on monitoring trends and patterns in global tree mortality,
continues the online seminar series.
You are invited to join on *MAR 24 *(9 am MT, 3 pm UTC):
*Dr. NATE MCDOWELL*
_Rising tree mortality in the Anthropocene_
*_
_*
_Abstract_:Tree mortality is rising in most documented locations but the
drivers and mechanisms of this trend are unknown. Changes in atmospheric
carbon dioxide, temperature, and vapor pressure deficit, along with
drought, are primary potential drivers. Mechanisms linking these drivers
to mortality include water, carbon, and pathogen defense
processes. These processes are interdependent such that failure of one
can lead to failure of the others. Prediction of future mortality is
challenged by our understanding of the mechanisms, however, some
evidence suggests the growing mortality rates are likely to continue
well into the future. I conclude by reviewing the numerous challenges
and opportunities for predicting future tree mortality.

In 2021, the world’s forests are at a turning point. Although deforestation has decreased since 1990 according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), it still continues to rage (10 M Km2/year).
As you may know, the Global Forest Summit, a Conference gathering Leaders of International Organizations, national and local Governments, Leaders from the private sector and NGOs, will be hosted on March 12th. Considering the future of Forests as central in the fight against climate change and willing to protect biodiversity and wildlife, Speakers will share their views and inputs to advocate for significant actions and measures as this year marks the start of the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. The Global Forest Summit will act as the curator of a global conversation that is needed to spark concrete actions and mobilize cross-border throught leadership, collaboration and resources. It is still time to register: together, let’s put the future of Forests in the international Agenda for the next ten years.
The conference will take place live on March 12, 2021, from 9:00–19:00 CET for the opening panel, five roundtables and the closing panel led by experts and decision makers, such as:

WATCH NOW ONLINE Seminar by Belinda Medlyn on tree mortality in Australia
by ITMN-Henrik Hartmann
Dear all,
Seminar #3 of the International Tree Mortality Network, an initiative of
the IUFRO Task Force on Monitoring Trends and Patterns of Global Tree
Mortality, is now available online.
Watch this seminar at:
https://youtu.be/hRlBc7oR328 <https://youtu.be/hRlBc7oR328 >
*Prof. BELINDA MEDLYN*
_Tree mortality in Australian ecosystems: past, present and future_
_Abstract_: Australia is not only the driest inhabited continent, it
also experiences high interannual variability in rainfall, and severe
multi-year droughts. Tree death from drought is thus a recurring feature
of the Australian landscape. In this talk I will review our current
understanding of drought mortality in Australian ecosystems, including
the historical context, current field research on the extent and
mechanisms of drought dieback and recovery, and the development of
models to predict future drought mortality risk.
_Belinda is Distinguished Professor at the University of Western
Sydney_. Her research focuses on how plants, especially forests, respond
to increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide and climate change. She works
at the interface between experiments and models: her aim is to develop
evidence-based models of how ecosystem productivity, water use and
species composition will be affected by global change, and to do so she
works closely with a number of experimental teams world-wide to test and
improve ecosystem models.

Building on momentum!
More than 100 abstracts have been pouring in over the past two weeks, and we want to build on the great momentum!
We are extending the deadline for abstract submission to February 22nd.
Scientists, managers, policy makers and civil society working in the boreal regions of the world: we invite you to join the IBFRA 2021 virtual conference and share your work with an international, interdisciplinary, and multi-cultural community. Students and early carrier scientists, you are the manpower and living force of research development and outreach! So be warmly invited and encouraged to submit an abstract and discuss your research ideas with your peers.
1st, 2nd and 3d best oral and poster presentations will be rewarded $1000, $500 and $250 prizes respectively.
Our program is now online<https://ibfra.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=396aea89a262d8672c84122a9&i… >! In addition to the session's presentations and discussions, we will have art exhibits, workshops, poster sessions, panel discussions and - maybe - a virtual field trip! With chats and online meeting rooms for smaller group and back-to back discussions we aim at bringing the interaction close to an “in person” conference experience.
We also have a new session<https://ibfra.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=396aea89a262d8672c84122a9&i… > on policy entitled "Public policy and boreal science - why do we need to work together?". This panel will explore a recent approach involving IBFRA, a number of boreal governments, and a new science-policy forum devoted to the boreal regions.
So - if you haven't consider joining the IBFRA 2021 conference yet, now is the time! To submit an abstract, click the button below to get started.
