Dear members of IUFRO Division 3,
The nomination invitation in my previous mail resulted in two candidates, for which 31 of the 46 Div. 3 office holders placed their vote. The result was that Div 3's first choice was to continue under the leadership of Woodam (who received 68% of the votes). Mauricio Acuna, the second nominee, received 32% of the votes.
In the enclosed document, I provide more information on the new democratic nomination process and my reflections over it. To summarize, the nomination was easy to conduct, and provided important input both to the division management and the division members. To have several candidates (and their supporting organizations) for the leadership is naturally a very good indication of the importance of both the current and future activities of Division 3. Consequently, the democratic nomination process is strongly recommended in the future.

Dear members of IUFRO Division 3,
It is time to think of who we want to lead our Division for the next term (2019-2024). Thus, I invite everyone that receives this mail to nominate a person for the post as Coordinator of Division 3. The Division Coordinator can serve for two terms, so our current coordinator Woodam Chung can serve for one more term if we would want him to do so. However, he still needs to be nominated in order to be able to candidate.
Div. 3's nomination procedure will be as follows:
1. Candidates are nominated by sending the required documents to me by email by November 30th.
2. I will compile the eligible candidates, and the current Div. 3 Officeholder (coordinators and deputies) will vote for their favorite by December 15th.
3. I will compile the vote results, and send it to the IUFRO President and the Nominating Committee by December 31st.
So if you have a candidate in mind, please do not hesitate to nominate that person. However, if a person already is nominated, there is no need to nominate again. Thus, you might want to consult me before initiate the work of collecting the three documents that is required to accompany each nomination:
1. A curriculum vitae,
2. A candidate statement indicating main points of the candidate's envisaged strategy for the Division (max. 1 page),
3. Signed consent by the candidate and the candidate's employer, stating that the candidate is willing to serve as Division Coordinator and that the employer is willing and able to support travel and coordination activities required to fulfil the responsibilities of Division Coordinator (please use the enclosed document).
Please note that self-nomination is not allowed. Moreover, candidates should have good knowledge of IUFRO. Thus, they have preferably served as IUFRO officeholder (deputy division coordinator, research group coordinator or working party coordinator).

PS. According to IUFRO statutes and rules, candidates for the Division Coordinator position can be nominated independently by any individual within IUFRO's Member Organization and Associate Members. However, Division Coordinators will normally be proposed by the Divisions concerned. How this has been done has hitherto not been clear. Thus, I also enclose the draft for a new nomination guideline document prepared by the current Division coordinator, Woodam Chung, and myself that guide the above described nomination process, in order to establish a transparent and democratic process of how our Division nominates candidates for Division 3 Coordinator.

Yes, it is time to sign up for FEC2018 to be held in Rotorua, New Zealand!! This truly international Forest Engineering conference only occurs once every 3 or 4 years; so dust off your travel bags, pack you swim gear and get ready to be part of it. · Monday is an optional workshop where in small groups you will spend the day with a leading NZ company in a theme of your choice.
· Tuesday we have a great line-up of plenary session speakers, followed by concurrent technical sessions and the delicious conference dinner.
· Wednesday is the all-day field trip, including the largest log loading port in NZ as well as modern logging operations. Lunch is at the beach!
· Thursday is technical sessions, and an early finish to allow you to start you ‘non-technical’ activities…
While this FEC programme alone makes the trip to New Zealand worthwhile, Rotorua is a geothermal area with extensive tourist and outdoor sporting opportunities. Plan to stay a few days extra, bring your family.

Subject: Input to the 2019 GSDR
Dear Colleagues,
We are writing to request your input to the 2019 Global Sustainable
Development Report (GSDR). The GSDR, mandated by the United Nations' Member
States in the outcome document of the 2012 Rio + 20 conference, is meant to
strengthen the science-policy interface and provide a strong evidence-based
instrument to support policymakers in promoting poverty eradication and
sustainable development.
The GSDR is being drafted by an independent group of scientists (IGS),
supported by a task team of six UN-system agencies. Profiles of the 15 IGS
members are found here:

As part of its outreach efforts, the IGS is soliciting inputs from a diverse
group of scientific and non-scientific communities, from all over the world,
in the form of publications supported by short abstracts or descriptions of
case studies. Currently, we are requesting contributions in four major
areas:
(1) interactions among SDGs and their targets,
(2) transformation pathways towards sustainable development;
(3) looking beyond the SDGs (major issues identified by research which are
not explicitly taken into account in the SDGs), and
(4) the role of science for sustainable development. Contributions will be
acknowledged in the GSDR.

While Division 3 - Forest Operations Engineering and Management - does
promote interdisciplinary research within and beyond the field of forest
sciences - we learn from other disciplines, and create synergy and
innovations by bringing new perspectives and new solution approaches into
our discipline.
Thinking outside-the-box and bringing new innovations are necessary to
revive our research and profession. We are facing great challenges, but we
believe these challenges offer great opportunities.
The Freiburg Congress provided us with a glimpse of the future - new
technologies, new innovations that are on the horizon. This forum has given
us an opportunity to see the future of forest engineering.
