Dear colleagues,
I hope you are doing well :)
I want to draw your attention to a recently launched initiative led by the IUFRO - IFSA Joint Task Force on Education, who also led the Educators Forum at the IUFRO Posadas event.
As many of you are educators yourself perhaps you have a method or best practice that could be showed off to the world and help raise the profile of the importance of Forest Education in the Latin American context, or perhaps you have a colleague who should be rewarded for their great teaching initiatives.
This year the International forest community has decided to celebrate Forest Education as a theme on the auspices of the International Day of Forests Celebration (every year on March 21st).
To do so a few different international organizations, mainly IUFRO, IFSA, University of Helsinki and FAO, have come together to launch 2 competitions for educators with three very intriguing prizes.
The first competition on Best Practices in Forestry education is available here:
<https://www.iufro.org/science/task-forces/forest-education/competition-best…> https://www.iufro.org/science/task-forces/forest-education/competition-best…
With a prize package of 1) An all-inclusive trip to Brazil to the World Forestry Congress 2) A fully funded forest visit to Finland
The second competition is put on by FAO, available here: <http://www.fao.org/international-day-of-forests/teachers-contest/en/> http://www.fao.org/international-day-of-forests/teachers-contest/en/
With a prize package of a fully funded trip to Rome to celebrate IDF here at UNFAO HQ.
I hope this can be of use to you and hope you can also share within your networks.
Many thanks,
--

Dear colleagues
herewith we remind of our <https://www.wsl.ch/en/about-wsl/events/courses-offered-by-wsl/summer-school…> International Summer School in Land-System Science ( <https://www.wsl.ch/land-system-science-2019> https://www.wsl.ch/land-system-science-2019) which will take place from
July 7 to 12, 2019 in Filzbach (Switzerland)
Students will develop an integrated understanding of land system science and landscape assessment. They learn to use state-of-the-art data, tools, and models for spatial analyses as well as improve their ability to build strong connections between scientific understanding and the communities of practice and policy that govern and manage the use of land.
This summer school is organized by the Swiss Federal Institute of Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL in cooperation with the Global Land Programme GLP and University of Berne. The lecturers build a multi-disciplinary group of renowned scientists from WSL, ETH Zurich, Wageningen University, Free University of Amsterdam, and University of Berne.
You find all information and the flyer to download at: <https://www.wsl.ch/land-system-science-2019> https://www.wsl.ch/land-system-science-2019
The deadline for application is extended until January 15, 2019. Please upload a motivation letter and a 1-page CV with your registration.
Please note that this summer school will take place right after the world congress of the International Association of Landscape Ecology IALE in Milano (Italy). You can reach the summer school venue in less than a half-day train trip from Milano.
Please spread this email among your colleagues, students, and anybody who may be interested!
Looking forward to your applications!

Subject: Post-doc position
Hi,
The post-doc position is now online. This is the English version of the post:
Postdoctoral Researcher in Forest ecosystem services and biodiversity
Our naturally beautiful campus in the Jyväskylä city centre is home to a dynamic multidisciplinary research university – a modern, open and collaborative community of 2,500 experts and 15,000 students seeking answers to the pivotal questions of today and tomorrow. It was here, in 1863, that Finnish-language teacher education began. Since then, the University of Jyväskylä has been serving the future. The dialogue between research, education and society is our driving force. We cherish this balance of research and education, and work to promote open thinking. We kindle the skills, knowledge and passion to live wisely for the best of humanity.
<https://www.jyu.fi/science/en/bioenv/frontpage> The Department of Biological and Environmental Science is currently seeking to recruit staff to the position of
Postdoctoral Researcher in Forest ecosystem services and biodiversity, for a fixed 3 year term starting 1.1.2019 or as agreed.
The postdoctoral researcher will work in the research group of Prof. Mikko Mönkkönen in the Biodiversa funded project "Scenarios for biodiversity and ecosystem services acknowledging health”. This project is a part of a multi-national consortium, with collaborators in Sweden, Norway, Germany and Austria. The main aim of the project is to forecast the impacts of mitigating climate change impacts through the transitioning process from a fossil-based to a bio-based economy at a European scale. The key issues considered in this research are the impacts on forest biodiversity and the relationship to human health. This work includes simulating forest data to mimic various management alternatives at a landscape level, and then explore alternative policies through the use of optimization tools and Bayesian statistical models. As a multi-objective problem, trade-offs will be examined between criteria for biodiversity, the perceived impact on health, climate impacts and ecosystem services. The projected solutions will help in assessing how each country should contribute to mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. This assessment will include a quantification of the uncertainties of the conclusions.
The duties and qualification requirements and language skills for the position of the Postdoctoral Researcher are stipulated by <https://www.jyu.fi/en/workwithus/qualifications> the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines. The postdoctoral researcher is expected to have good skills in English language.
We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic member to our research group. Candidates should have a PhD or be about to obtain a PhD in landscape ecology, forestry, or another relevant discipline. Expertise in forest planning and understanding of forest growth models is necessary, including the ability to work with large data sets. Experience in forest simulation modelling and/or multi-objective optimization is considered an asset.
The job-specific salary component of a postdoctoral researcher is based on the job demands level 5-6 (2893,95 €/Month – 3374,18 €/Month) according to the salary system concerning teaching and research staff at universities. In addition, a personal performance-based salary component amounting to the maximum of 46,3% of the job-specific salary component is also paid.
A trial period of six months will be used when the position is first filled.
For further information: Senior Researcher Kyle Eyvindson, +358 50 439 3311, kyle.j.eyvindson@ jyu.fi or Dean Mikko Mönkkönen, mikko.monkkonen(a)jyu.fi <mailto:mikko.monkkonen@jyu.fi>
Please attach the following documents to the online application form:
1. Curriculum vitae (CV), composed according to good scientific practice and considering, when possible, <http://www.tenk.fi/en> the template for a researcher’s curriculum vitae by the Finnish Advisory Board on Research Integrity.
2. Short application / motivation letter, including research interests.
3. List of publications covering all the scientific and other publications of the applicant.
4. Two reference letters from people who can be contacted by telephone or e-mail before or after the interview.
Please submit your application at the latest by October 15th 2018 using the online application form.
