Invitation to remotely join Forest Invasion Synthesis Centre Prague Inaugural Symposium, 6-8 May, 2025

The Forest Invasion Synthesis Centre, Prague (FISC) at the Czech University
of Life Sciences Prague is pleased to invite you to the „Biological
Invasions in Forest“, an Inaugural Symposium

aims to gather an interdisciplinary team of international experts to
summarize the current state of scientific knowledge on biological invasions
in forests. The objective of the symposium is to cover the breadth of
subject matter on forest invasions through a series of invited
presentations and use these presentations as a jumping-off point for
discussions on future research challenges. Ultimately, the goal of the
symposium is to generate discussions that will lead to the development of
scientific problems that will be addressed by FISC working groups. We
anticipate a formal call for FISC working group proposals this summer but
participation in the inaugural symposium is an opportunity for individuals
that have ideas for FISC working groups to share these ideas and seek input
from others. While symposium attendees are not required to present ideas
for working group topics, those that would like to make a brief (5 minute)
presentation of their idea are asked to contact FISC leader Andrew Liebhold

their remote presentation during the symposium.

*About the Forest Invasions Synthesis Centre, Prague*
The widening gap in research capabilities across many EU countries,
necessitates measures to accelerate research at institutions in newer
member countries and better connect this research abroad. The Forest
Invasion Synthesis Centre, Prague (FISC) at the Czech University of Life
Sciences Prague seeks an improved understanding of the ecology and
management of biological invasions in forests. It is being established
through the HIVE project (project no. 101187384) under Horizon Europe, the
EU‘s primary funding program for research and innovation. FISC adopts the
“synthesis centre” model that focuses on the use of existing data and
models to develop new approaches to socio-environmental research. The
Centre focuses on biological invasions of plants, insects and tree
pathogens in forest and interactions with socioeconomic factors. FISC will
host scientific working groups that meet at the Centre to develop
collaborations on breakthrough ideas in the field of invasion science.

Practical Course in Chemical Ecology

Attention Behavioural/Chemical Ecologists and Forest Health Specialists:
Are you working or studying in the global south and interested in developing some practical skills in the discipline of chemical ecology? If you are, please visit our webpage to learn more about a practical course in chemical ecology (https://www.africancentreofchemicalecology.com/about-1) This course will provide opportunities for young scientists and students from the Southern hemisphere to develop critical skills in chemical ecology through hands on experience in methods to advance the collection, identification, characterization and use of semiochemicals in insect pest management. This course is co-organized by the African Centre of Chemical Ecology, Asia-Pacific Association of Chemical Ecology and the Latin American Association of Chemical Ecology and supported by the International Union of Forest Research Organizations and the International Society of Chemical Ecology.
To facilitate participation by students and early career professionals from the global south we are offering financial assistance to selected delegates to participate. Applications should be submitted by April 16, 2025 (see https://www.africancentreofchemicalecology.com/about-1 for instructions to apply) to ensure full consideration. The practical course will occur 20-31 October, 2025 (20-26 October will be the practical course; 27-31 October will be an IUFRO Working Party meeting focused on the intersection of the disciplines of behavioral/ chemical ecology and biological control). Delegates selected for participation must attend the practical course and are strongly encouraged to attend the meeting to network and see the techniques covered in the practical course applied to research questions). Delegates must also be prepared to participate in virtual lectures delivered in advance of the practical course to provide necessary background information.
