*A position is open for a Research Scientist (10 months) at the Université libre de Bruxelles, Bruxelles, Belgium.* _Topic_ Influence of the distribution, extent and fragmentation of pine stands in Europe on the distribution and abundance of /Monochamus/ spp., the vectors of the pine wood nematode, /Bursaphelenchus xylophilus/. _Eligible profiles _ The candidates must have a Master or PhD degree in biological sciences, agricultural sciences or ecology, with good demonstrated skills in spatial statistics and geographic information systems. Graduate student and post doc opportunities at University of Alberta

Dear All, Postdoctoral and graduate student positions are available in the lab of Prof. Janice Cooke at the University of Alberta, Edmonton. The project is focussed on understanding the genomics of lodgepole pine resistance to the pathogen Endocronartium harknessii, the causal agent of western gall rust. The candidates will interact with a multidisciplinary project team that includes scientists in the Canadian Forest Service and collaborators in the Province of Alberta. All Governments, relevant institutions and organizations are encouraged to submit nominations. Nominations may be submitted by organizations or institutions, regardless of whether they are admitted to the Plenary of IPBES as an observer. Please help us disseminate this call for nominations of fellows widely to relevant institutions and organizations, such as universities or research institutions. The IPBES Fellowship Programme, which is part of a larger capacity-building portfolio of activities, targets early career experts who wish to gain experience by participating in the work of IPBES. Selected fellows will take part as authors in the chapter of the assessment they are selected for. Fellows will attend author meetings and receive training to gain an in-depth understanding of the IPBES assessment processes. Fellows will also be paired up with a mentor for the assessment period. Nominated fellows should have expertise related to the themes and skills required for the chapters of the assessment as set out in its scoping document (available here<https://ipbes.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=5da0fed71c7e4399fb28ab549&i…>). They should be experts on invasive alien species within one or more of the following disciplines: natural sciences, social sciences or the humanities; be indigenous and local knowledge experts or have expertise in indigenous and local knowledge systems; or be policy experts and practitioners. Governments and organizations are invited to nominate experts from a diversity of disciplinary backgrounds and gender, in order to ensure a balanced team of fellows. Abstract submission deadline for IUFRO Congress 2019 // Holiday wishes // Other news

Dear friends and colleagues, In case you are not aware of it, the abstract submission deadline for the IUFRO Congress 2019 in Curitiba, Brazil (29 Sept. - 5 Oct. 2019) is the end of December (31 Dec. 2019). For details see http://iufro2019.com/abstracts-submission/ I believe all sessions of Research Group RG7.01 (Air pollution and climate change) are under Theme 2 / B7 (Forests and Climate Change), and sessions of RGs7.02 (Pathology) and 7.03 (Entomology) are under Theme 4 / D7 (Biodiversity, Ecosystem Services and Biological Invasions). Also, I'd like to wish you all happy holidays and all the best for the new year. I look forward to seeing you at the IUFRO Congress or one of the upcoming IUFRO Division 7 conferences. Finally, I have some news to share: After 21 years in New Zealand (and 20 of those with the New Zealand Forest Research Institute / 'Scion'), I will relocate to Switzerland at the beginning of February 2019 to take up a position with the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL, near Zurich. I look forward to new collaboration opportunities with colleagues in Europe, but I will also continue working with colleagues in New Zealand and elsewhere.
