"Sande McNabb Student Travel Award" - APS Foundation

Dear Forest Pathologists,
I am so saddened by Sande?s passing. He will be missed greatly because of
his great influence on so many people including myself.
As many of you suggested, I am setting up the "Sande McNabb Student Travel
Award" with the American Phytopathological Society (APS) Foundation. This
award helps underwrite the cost of APS Annual Meeting attendance for
students. This seems like a very fitting tribute for Sande, who was long
known as an unwavering advocate of students from diverse backgrounds.
To establish the ?Sande McNabb Student Travel Award?, we need to first
collect $2,500 before the APS Foundation can create the ?Sande McNabb
Award?. Please visit the following website for more details.

Ned Klopfenstein will help to collect the initial $2,500 from potential
contributors.
After the award is established, the future donors can directly contribute
to the APS Foundation. The receipt of $2,500 creates a fund account with
the APS Foundation; however, we need to collect a total of $10,000 in the
account to fully establish the travel award that will help fund student
travel each year (currently $500 award). Thus, it may take some time to
fully establish the ?Sande McNabb Student Travel Award?, which will help
students who want to attend the APS meeting and present their research. We
know that Sande was a strong supporter of the APS Student Travel Awards
because he previously provided several very generous donations to this
cause; these donations were supposed to remain anonymous (oops).
So, here is what I suggest we do.
1. Please fill in the attached form. And, make checks payable to the APS
Foundation.
2. Send check with form to Ned Klopfenstein.

3. Ned will keep the checks until we reach a total of $2,500, then he
will send all the checks to the APS Foundation. We hope that we can
collect $2,500 for the fund within a short amount of time. After that, the
"Sande McNabb Student Travel Award" fund will be established, and future
donors can contribute directly to the award fund at the APS foundation.
(*An acknowledgement of the receipt of these funds will be made to the
donor by the APS Foundation. All such donations are tax deductible since
the APS Foundation is a 501c3 organization.)

Research proposal with Acacia mangium

Dear ALL*,*
The present message is to propose to your institution a research project
that will boost the forest development in Colombia, our country. Now days,
Colombia has 20.000 ha of *Acacia mangium* plantation whit very good
performance, to recover degraded lands, produce pulp for paper production
and solid wood production. The government is planning to increase the area
to 1´000.000 ha because all the benefits a forest plantation has to the
society.
At the moment the unique problem *A. mangium* has is the attack of some
disease that cause a sudden death. This has decreased the interest in this
specie in the public. In our previous research we have found that there are
some fungus in attacked specimens: *Fusarium*sp., *Myrothecium *sp. y *
Phomopsis* sp., that could be causing the seen problems .
We would like to hear of possibilities for financial support, and an
institution that will join us (we are working with an University in our
area). We would provide resources and also we will cover some of the
expenses, and the University will provide scientific advices, laboratories
and equipment. We will really appreciate your help contacting the right
institution and personnel if your institution is not interested.

Passing of Dr. Sande McNabb

I am sad to share that Dr. Sande McNabb died this week in Ames, Iowa.

The following information is from the Ames Tribune:
Harold Sanderson ?Sande? McNabb, 83, died Thursday, May 12, 2011, at
Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m.
Monday, May 16, with services at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 17, at Collegiate
Presbyterian Church in Ames. Burial will follow at Iowa State University
Cemetery.
Sande taught and did research at Iowa State University for 47 years (1953
to 2000). He was a devoted husband, father and mentor to many. McNabb was
active in scientific circles, Democratic politics and Boy Scouts of
America.
He is survived by wife, Marguerite ?Margo? McNabb; sister, Margery McNabb,
of Lincoln, Neb.; son, Peter J. (Jeanette Slaybaugh) McNabb, of Des
Moines; and daughter, Genene (Reid Gagle) McNabb, of St. Paul, Minn.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Iowa State University Foundation
in memory of Sande McNabb.

Sande had friends throughout the world. In addition to being a classic
forest pathologist, he personally touched the lives of many students. One
of his passions in life was promoting the legacy of Dr. George Washington
Carver, including encouraging opportunities for minorities to realize the
full potential of their contributions to science and humanity. To this
end, Margo and their children intend to establish a specially named
memorial fund at ISU to assist with continuation of this legacy.

it is with great pleasure we officially invite
you to attend the 13th International Conference
of the
International Union of Forestry Research
Organization, Working Party 7.02.01 "Root and
Butt Rot of
Forest Trees" scientific meeting, visiting the
Italian peninsula from September 4th until Sept
10th,
2011.
1- General information - The Conference will
start in Firenze later on will move to the
Dolomite
mountains where will be possible to continue with
sessions an also to visit conifer woods. The
Conference will be preceded by an optional PRE-CONFERENCE, field trip in ROMA.
Conference welcome and registration will be
organized at Casa della Creatività - Vicolo di
Santa Maria
Maggiore, 1 Firenze, near the Cathedral, in the
evening of Sunday 4th where you are invited to
have a
welcome cocktail.
The first session of the Conference will start at
8.30 on September 5th in the Conference room in
Firenze (Via San Gallo, 25) At the Auditorium
close to the Cenacolo di Santa Apollonia.
Sessions will
continue on September 6th in the same place. On
September 7th we will move by coach northward to
Dolomite area, stopping along the way in S.
Michele all'Adige (Trento) where we will visit
the FEM
Research Centre and its historic wine cellar.
Along the travel we will enjoy the view of the
Dolomites
landscape, villages and mountains (the beauty and
the geological diversity, the botany, and the
landscape itself were decisive in the
international commission of experts of UNESCO to
declare in
2009 the Dolomites as a World Heritage site)
until in San Martino di Castrozza where we will
stay
for three more days. On September 8th the meeting
will continue in San Martino with a full session
day. We will spent the next day, September 9th,
visiting the Natural Park of "Paneveggio Pale di
San
Martino" and finally will end at approximately
12.00 on September 10th after the closing session.
Getting There and Away - For your travel plans
consider to reach Firenze directly by fly but also
by train from Milano, Roma or Venice. All cities
have good train connections to Firenze. No
transportation will be provided from Roma to
Firenze for those interested in the optional
preexcursion
near Roma.
The Firenze Airport is located 4 km from the
center of the city. A taxi can make the trip in 15
minutes, and the Bus between the airport and
Santa Maria Novella railway station takes 20
minutes.
Bus service has a frequency of 30 min.
Firenze Train Station - Florence's central
station is called Firenze Santa Maria Novella
(look for
signs announcing "Firenze SMN"). The train
station is located in the northwest corner of
central
Florence, within convenient walking distance of
most Florence tourist attractions (as well as
Cenacolo
di Santa Apollonia).
After the meeting end in San Martino di
Castrozza, it will be possible back to Firenze
with the
reserved coach (included in the registration fee)
or to reach Venezia (2 hours distance by Bus

Optional Pre-Conference Field Trip

Scientific program - Information for Authors
Attendees will have 15-20 minutes for their oral
presentations including a couple of minutes for
questions. Following the tradition of last
conference in California, Poster presentations are
substituted by short oral presentations. Short
oral presentations will be 5 minutes long and will
include a maximum of 5 slides. Questions will be
asked at the end of a session rather than at the
end
of each presentation.
Priority for short talks will be given to
students who are not giving a full presentation,
followed by
attendees who are not given a long talk, and
finally short talks may be used as a second
presentation
by attendees who already give a full talk. When
submitting abstracts for both long and short
talks,
attendees need to select the focus area of their
presentation. Please include first and second best
selections among the following focus areas:

Scientific program - Information for Authors
Attendees will have 15-20 minutes for their oral
presentations including a couple of minutes for
questions. Following the tradition of last
conference in California, Poster presentations are
substituted by short oral presentations. Short
oral presentations will be 5 minutes long and will
include a maximum of 5 slides. Questions will be
asked at the end of a session rather than at the
end
of each presentation.
Priority for short talks will be given to
students who are not giving a full presentation,
followed by
attendees who are not given a long talk, and
finally short talks may be used as a second
presentation
by attendees who already give a full talk. When
submitting abstracts for both long and short
talks,
attendees need to select the focus area of their
presentation. Please include first and second best
selections among the following focus areas:
1 - Genomics and plant-pathogen interactions;
2 - Ecology;
3 - Aetiology and epidemiology;
4 - Systematic, taxonomy, and phylogeography;
5 - Population genetics;
6- New reports, diagnostics, and research applications of diagnostic methods:
