WEBINARS on using the Restor platform for your restoration project
You need to get the word out on your restoration project to connect with
collaborators, funders, and geo-relevant information. The Restor platform
can help you with all three functions. By listing their restoration
projects on the platform, ISTF members will gain visibility to both
potential collaborators and funders. They will be able to explore
site-specific ecological data for planning and monitoring of their
projects. Restor, the International Society of Tropical Foresters, and
Terraformation are teaming up to offer a training webinar (same content) on
4 occasions for different regions on how to load your restoration project
on the Restor platform. Dates and times (find your time zone at
https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/converter.html)

Dear colleagues,
We would like to remind you that the deadline for abstract submission is approaching
31st March 2023
Therefore, we invite you, your co-workers, and students to present your research work at the IUFRO Forest Environment DIV8 Conference 2023.
( <https://iufro2023.uevora.pt/call-for-abstracts/> https://iufro2023.uevora.pt/call-for-abstracts/)
The conference program includes four Plenary Lectures that will be delivered by Prof. Camilla Sandström (Umea University), Prof. José Miguel Cardoso Pereira (ISA, Lisbon University), Prof. Pier Paolo Roggero (Sassari University) and Dr. Rene Zamora Cristales (Oregon State University).
Proposals for a Thematic Session organization are also welcomed. ( <https://iufro2023.uevora.pt/conference/#thematicsessions> https://iufro2023.uevora.pt/conference/#thematicsessions)
We look forward to welcoming you to Évora, Portugal (24-27 October 2023).
With best regards from
The IUFRO2023 Organizing and Scientific Committees
Dear Iufro colleagues,
On the occasion of the International Day of Forests on March 21st, a
group of forest scientists of the Forests and Societies Research Unit of
Cirad, thought it would be an opportunity to publish an opinion column
to recall the urgent need to conserve and to safeguard the tropical
forests. This opinion column will be published in the French online
newspaper Reporterre which has about 1.5 million readers per month.
Please take few minutes to read it and if you agree with the contents,
please sign it by filling the form available on this link:
https://forms.gle/r981va1BNEEz8yfC9
If you want to sign the form, please do it before *March 13th, Midnight
CET.*
By signing this paper you are signing as an individual but you can also
indicate your institution. The list of signatories and their institution
(if you indicate it) will also be published on the Reporterre website
with the paper.
The original text is in French but I attached an English version of it
for the non French speakers.
We hope that this opinion paper will reach a large public and will be
of interest for others medias. With this, we hope that we will be able
to increase our visibility and get opportunities to talk further about
the urgency in saving the tropical forests.
Please do not hesitate to disseminate this message to your scientists
and students networks.
cheers

Dear IUFRO colleagues
it is with great sadness we have to inform you that Prof. William (Bill) J.
Manning (born on June 13, 1941), professor emeritus at the University of
Massachusetts at Amherst, USA, passed away on March 4th, 2023 in Boston,
following a 6-month illness. He received his B.S. in Horticulture from
Michigan State University, and M.S. in Plant Pathology and Ph.D. in Biology
from University of Delaware. Bill was a widely known and well-respected
scientist who pioneered research on the impacts of air pollution on plants.
His research focused on responses of plants to ozone and how ozone and
other air pollutants affect plants growing in forest and urban
environments. He promoted use of plants as bioindicators of various air
pollutants, summarized that idea in a widely-read book “Biomonitoring of
Air Pollution with Plants”. He worked for more than 10 years in Central
and Eastern Europe surveying forests of the Carpathian Mountain for in situ
bioindicators of ambient ozone. His long-term studies on loblolly pine
(Pinus taeda), bean cultivars, and clover clones by making foliar
applications of antioxidants (ethylenediurea) helped to clarify the complex
picture of sensitivity and tolerance of plants to ozone.
For over 30 years Prof. Manning was an Editor-in-Chief of the prestigious
Environmental Pollution journal. Scientists specializing in air pollution
and climate change impacts on plant ecosystems recognize Bill’s enormous
contribution to the development of this subject. He was also an
outstanding, generous, inspiring mentor for numerous young scientists all
over the world. He welcomed Ph.D. students and postdoctoral scientists into
his laboratory, and also mentored students met at various domestic and
international conferences.
Although he was not an IUFRO officeholder, he was a very good friend of
IUFRO and actively participated in the activities of the RG 8.04 (formerly
7.01) on air pollution and climate change impacts on forest ecosystems. For
instance, he gave an invited speech on this topic at the IUFRO 125th
anniversary in 2017. When he retired, the RG8.04 established ‘The Bill
Manning Award’ for the best poster presentation at its biennial
conferences, as a recognition of Bill’s mentoring role in forestry and
environmental sciences. During his retirement Bill continued to be
scientifically very active. In 2020 he published his last book entitled
‘Trees and Global Warming: The Role of Forests in Cooling and Warming the
Atmosphere’.
Professor W. J. Manning was sincerely admired and respected by his peers
for his integrity, passion, vision and love for science. The scientific
community has lost a prominent and outstandingly creative colleague. We
mourn Bill’s loss not only as a scientist, but particularly as a gentleman
colleague of a cheerful demeanor and with an exceptional sense of humor.
His loss is immense and he will be fondly remembered by many colleagues
around the world. We will miss him as a good friend and companion of many
experiments, travels and scientific expeditions. We offer our sincerest
condolences to his wife Arlene, and sons Stephen and Michael with their
families.

Dear Colleagues,
We are pleased to announce that the international conference "Role and Fate of Forest Ecosystems in a Changing World" will be held in Bangkok, the "City of Angels", on 15-19 January 2024 back-to-back the 31st biennial conference of the International Union of Forest Research Organizations - Research Group 8.04 on "Air pollution and climate change".
For the first time, the conference will be held in Southeast Asia, in Thailand, which is particularly vulnerable to climate change and air pollution given its large population, highest biodiversity in the tropical zone, and large number of forest-dependent communities. Do not miss this cornerstone of effective international collaboration in the research of air pollution and plant ecosystems.
All useful information are available online: https://iufro-bangkok2024.com
