Dear All
I have exciting news for our IUFRO DIVISION 8 - the IUFRO Board approved all changes in structure and officers. Then we do have the great pleasure to welcome a NEW UNIT 8.04.00 – Air pollution and Climate Change (please see detailed list of officers attach.) – A big thanks to Elena, Alessandra and all the IUFRO colleagues that worked in this strategic change – welcome to all!
The Board has also approved the new Deputy coordinators positions, I welcome Elena Paoletti and Anna Barbati; together with Alexia Stokes and myself will be leading the Division for the next 5 years period. Then I am very proud to let you know that we are making history in IUFRO since this is the first Division ever in the long history of IUFRO to have only women coordinators.
Note several changes are taking place for WP officers – I will send a detailed file with these changes in positions and newcomers after the WC in Curitiba, I know that some changes will still happen while discussions will take place during the WC
For the ones in Curitiba
*Please note we will have THE all DIVISION 8 get together (administrative meeting) on Friday 4 place: R14-WING 2 time: 17:30 – 19:20 IMP: There will be a bus waiting outside the venue to take us directly to the gala dinner after our Division meeting (so be prepared for this long day J)
*We have the record number of 48 technical sessions in Curitiba!! So look in the program for the “magic 8” number to follow up great presentations and posters – we are covering ALL topics which shows the great diversity and broad expertise in our Division Forest Environment
*Please take note of other important Administrative meetings
Air pollution and climate change R02 Wing 3 Tuesday 1st 12-12:50
African wildlife conservation and management R19 PG Tuesday 1st 12-12:50
Radioactive contamination of forest ecosystems R09 Wing 2 Wend 2nd 17:30-18:20
Landscape Ecology Working Party (8.01.02) R Wing 2 Wend 2nd 18:30-19:20
Looking forward to see many of you in Curitiba and looking forward also to continue building strong collaborations towards a robust Division 8
My most kind regards from Curitiba

Objet : ALTERFOR Side Event Oct 1, 12:00-13:50 - XXV IUFRO World Congress
During the congress we will host a Side Event titled Adapting Europes
forests to global challenges: Lessons from ALTERFOR, on October 1st from
12:00-13:50 at Venue R8 wing 2. ALTERFOR is a large Horizon 2020 project
(see <https://alterfor-project.eu/)> https://alterfor-project.eu/)
exploring the following overarching question: What alternative forest
management models will enable to provide the desired ecosystem services
under changing climate and societal conditions over the coming century? At
the Side Event we will summarize and discuss the results from 10 landscapes
spread all over Europe.
We noticed that you moderate session D8r: Forest Biodiversity in the
framework of global change and the role of Landscape and would like to
invite you to the event. Your session clearly relates to the topics of
ALTERFOR and the presence of you and presenters from your session would be
valuable for an insightful discussion.
Part 1 - Insights from ALTERFOR case studies
- Overview of H2020 project ALTERFOR
- Case Study Examples:
o Italy: People everywhere
o Sweden: Intensifying the intensive
o Lithuania: Breaking the code
- Summing up: Policy implications
Part 2 - Science across scales and disciplines to handle the complexity of
socio-ecological systems
- From stand to landscape to continent: Ecosystem service trade-offs
- Linking scientific truth with power: knowledge transfer in ALTERFOR
- Summarising discussion

Dear colleague,
Next year in March we will organize a conference on mixed forests “Mixed
species forests: risks, resilience and management” in Lund, Sweden.
See attached second circular for more information concerning abstracts,
registration etc. For more information you can visit the conference
web-page (www.mixedforest2020.se) The web-page will be regularly updated.
It is our hope that you find this interesting and that you inform other
potential participants in your networks.
We apologize if you get this message more than once.
With kind regards,

Objet : Upcoming postdoc position in Ecosystem Ecology of Siberia, based in WI and OR.
*Have you always wanted to learn more about Siberia? *
Come study disturbance ecology and vegetation shifts due to climate change with our amazing team of researchers at Portland State, US Forest Service, Oak Ridge National Lab, U of Tennessee-Knoxville and IIASA in Austria.
*Postdoctoral Researcher to study climate change and disturbances in
Siberia*
*This outreach notice is an early alert* to inform potential applicants that the Department of Geography at Portland State University will soon be advertising for a *2+ year post-doctoral researcher funded by the National Science Foundation. *
The successful candidate will be a member of an international interdisciplinary team of landscape ecologists, forest ecologists, and spatial modelers at Portland State University, the U.S. Forest Service, Oak Ridge National Lab, and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis in Laxenburg, Austria. The candidate will estimate the ability of arctic and boreal ecosystems to keep pace with climate change and to quantify temporal and spatial variation in biome shifts and C stocks across a large latitudinal gradient in Siberian Russia ( https://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward?AWD_ID=1844435) Capitalizing on a rich and underutilized empirical dataset of Siberia, we will project future species composition and C dynamics under climate change using a landscape-scale forest simulation model (LANDIS-II) and compare our results to similar output from a global scale DGVM (CLM-FATES). The results will be used to improve how DGVMs account for landscape-scale processes such as dispersal, disturbance and species-level interactions, which will ultimately impact the land cover inputs used by Global Circulation Models to project future global climate. The successful candidate will have primary responsibility for the LANDIS-II modeling portion of the project.
Major duties and tasks of the position:
· Develop and validate initial conditions for the study area
· Improve capabilities to model non-tree species (e.g., shrubs,
sphagnum, grass).
· Verify and validate permafrost behavior and hydrological impacts
in the model.
· Calibrate disturbances for each study area.
· Assist in developing and testing a new LANDIS-II output extension
to estimate land surface albedo.
· Conduct simulation experiments and analyze spatial and tabular
outputs using GIS, R and other analytical tools to test hypotheses.
· Collaborate with project personnel to publish and disseminate
results.
The position will be located at the US Forest Service Institute for Applied Ecosystems in Rhinelander, WI for approximately the first 14 months of the appointment, and then at Portland State University in Portland, OR for an additional 12 months. Compensation includes an annual salary of $54,000 with health benefits provided by Portland State. *The position will be officially advertised in mid-October and will begin on Jan 15, 2020*, although it could begin as late as March 1, 2020.
*Contact Information*
To express interest in this position please send an email, including a current CV and 1-pg letter of interest describing how your experience prepares you for the duties of the position, to Dr. Melissa Lucash (Principal Investigator) at lucash(a)pdx.edu.

The city is surrounded by national, state, and county parks and forests that provide multiple recreational opportunities year-round such as boating, fishing, camping, mountain-biking, and hiking activities in the summer months to snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and ice-fishing in the winter months ( www.travelwisconsin.com/northeast <http://www.travelwisconsin.com/northesast>). Rhinelander is surrounded by
232 lakes within 15 minutes of downtown, and is known as the “Ice Fishing Capital of the World.” Additional information about Rhinelander and neighboring cities within the Northwoods can be found at:
