Dear Colleagues,
Official approval has been granted by the Elsevier journal Environmental Research (http://www.journals.elsevier.com/environmental-research) to publish a Special Issue on the topic: Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) for Resilient Landscapes and Cities: Innovative Strategies and Scientific Advances (guest-editors: Raffaele Lafortezza, Jiquan Chen, Cecil Konijnendijk van den Bosch and Thomas B. Randrup).
This Special Issue will feature original research, reviews, and synthesis studies. These manuscripts will contribute to the Special Issue by illustrating general theories and methods, generating and analyzing natural and social datasets, developing integrated modeling techniques, and presenting state-of-the-art research results. We believe that this focus issue will play a pivotal role in deepening our understanding of current knowledge, research gaps, and future research needs for nature-based solutions in response to global change. Three main topic areas of Environmental Research will be addressed by this SI, including:
- Global warming/climate change
- Air, soil, and water pollutants and health
- Risk analysis, risk assessment and risk management, and public health
The manuscript submission deadline is September 30, 2016. A guest editorial committee will work with the ER handling editors on the review process. Please refer to the attached PDF document for more information about the Special Issue aims and timeline.

Dear Colleagues,
I am delighted to share with you the first announcement and call for submissions for our IUFRO International Conference "Between Tradition and Increasing Challenges: Future Development of Small-scale and Community Forestry in Times of Global Change". Some of you honor us by participating in the Scientific Committee, so I am sure we will have a very interesting meeting!
The conference will provide a unique opportunity to bring together researchers from all over the world to share evidence-based knowledge on small-scale and community forestry issues in Latin America, including the ecological, institutional and anthropogenic factors influencing the management and evolution of forests and forest landscapes. As traditional knowledge plays a substantial role in both small-scale and community forest ownership models, the integration of a historical dimension will provide an additional source of information in order to interpret and understand the challenges and constraints related to global change.
Please find attached the First Announcement as well as two pictures: the Paranaense Rainforest in Misiones, Argentina, and a workshop of mbya guarani craftspeople on valorization of the cultural value inherent to their production.
I look forward to promoting forest history and traditional knowledge (as well as community forestry) at this meeting!

"Forest-related policy and governance: Analyses in the environmental social sciences"
This international scholarly conference aims to be the global scientific hub for forest-related social sciences research, including studies on forest-related empirical fields, such as, e.g. agriculture. It will take stock of the latest scientific advancements in the fields of forest-related policy analyses, as well as wider forest-related governance studies from fields, such as, e.g. political science, sociology, anthropology, human geography, regional development, economics, psychology, environment, forest history, legal studies, as well as livelihood and tenure analyses. It strives to include theoretical, methodological and full-blown empirical contributions from around the globe in topical sessions.

>From 24 to 27 October 2016, IUFRO will hold its first Regional Congress for Asia and Oceania in Beijing, China. Under the Congress title "Forests for Sustainable Development: the Role of Research", we hope to establish a cutting-edge scientific programme highlighting the role of forest science in informing forest-related policies and management in Asia and Oceania to cope with the significant environmental, social and economic changes in the region and address the consequent challenges.
For such a programme to materialize, we need your contributions: diverse, from inside and outside the region, across the full range of natural and social science disciplines at various levels, from the gene to the globe.
Therefore please submit by 31 January at the latest your session proposals addressing one or more of the following Congress themes:
1. Sustainable forest management for enhanced provision of ecosystem services;
2. Forest and landscape rehabilitation and restoration;
3. Combating desertification, disaster and risk management, and climate change mitigation and adaptation;
4. Planted forests for fostering a greener economy;
5. Innovative technologies for bio-energy, bio-materials and other products;
6. Urban forestry for human health and community well-being;
7. Social and cultural aspects of forests, including traditional knowledge, human health, community participation and gender roles;
8. Forest and agro-forest management for food security, enhanced livelihoods and non-timber forest products.
