sustainably manage forests and to raise awareness of the key role forests
play in supporting local communities, rural livelihoods, women, youth and

*March 21: International Day of Forests*
*How did we celebrate #IntlForestDay?*
On the occasion of the 2019 International Day of Forests (IDF), the UN Food
and Agriculture Organization - Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific
(FAO- RAP) organized various events to celebrate this very important day.
As the IDF theme for 2019 is *Forests and Education: Learn to Love Forests*,
our week was packed with the color and energy of young people.
To incorporate the voices of youth into the Asia-Pacific Forest Sector
Outlook Study III
<https://fao.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3c62ac52c4d156733c15fbb9f&id… >,
a Regional Youth Consultation Workshop
<https://fao.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3c62ac52c4d156733c15fbb9f&id… >
gathered
students, researchers, and young professionals coming from diverse
backgrounds. In this workshop, we engaged youth through meaningful
conversations and interactive sessions to discuss their stories and
contexts, understandings of and relationships with forests, and
perspectives towards the future. Watch some of the interviews with youth *here

.
Investing in forestry education can change the world for the better.
Together with RECOFTC-The Center for People and Forests, Kasetsart
University (KU), and the International Forestry Students' Association
(IFSA), FAO supported a World Café event which engaged forestry students
from KU and IFSA
<https://fao.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3c62ac52c4d156733c15fbb9f&id… >to
sit and discuss issues related to forestry education and seek inputs on the
challenges and opportunities for the next generation of foresters.
You’re never too young to start learning about forests and trees. So we
brought 50 elementary students to a boat trip to Bangkachao, Thailand, an
urban green area praised by the Time magazine as the Best Urban Oasis of
Asia
<https://fao.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3c62ac52c4d156733c15fbb9f&id… >,
to raise awareness on the value of urban and peri-urban forests for food
security, air quality, flood control, and health and wellbeing. Watch the
short video of the trip here
<https://fao.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3c62ac52c4d156733c15fbb9f&id… >
.
Each year FAO-RAP hosts a student debate on International Day of Forests
<https://fao.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3c62ac52c4d156733c15fbb9f&id… >.
Eight teams from high schools and universities hotly debated topics related
to forestry education. The event was introduced by Kundhavi Kadiresan,
FAO-RAP Assistant Director-General and Regional Representative, with
welcome remarks by David Ganz, Executive Director of RECOFTC and by Dechen
Tsering, Director, Asia-Pacific Office UN Environment.
We were very fortunate to have with us Ms Donna Lee, senior international
climate policy advisor for FAO’s REDD+ and National Forest Monitoring team,
who discussed the prospects and the future of Climate Finance in the
Forestry Sector.
