<p>In Season 3<i> </i>of<i> Branching out: the forest podcast</i>, we explore how scientists in IUFRO collaborate across disciplines to tackle emerging topics through Task Forces. We continue the Season with the topic of <i>innovation</i> and the <i>Task Force on Scaling-Up Science-based Forest Sector Innovation.</i><br /><br />Host <i>Gerda Wolfrum</i> from IUFRO HQ and co-host <i>Leila Rossa Mouawad </i>from the American University of Beirut, Lebanon, and Deputy Coordinator of IUFRO's Communication Working Party, spoke with Task Force co-leads <i>Lyndall Bull</i>, an Australian forester with expertise in innovation and the bioeconomy trained at the University of Melbourne, and <i>Rajat Panwar</i>, a professor of responsible and sustainable business at Oregon State University, USA. They emphasized the importance of supporting the scaling up of science‑based innovation in the forest sector by raising awareness, strengthening education and communication, and promoting collaboration and partnerships among multiple stakeholders.<br /><br /><strong>Why is innovation important?</strong> The world's forests face growing pressure mainly from climate‑related stresses while demand for wood and non‑wood products continues to rise. To keep forests healthy, resilient, and able to provide essential goods and services, innovation is vital. It is important to understand that innovation comes in a variety of forms, from technological and digital advances to improved forest and land management practices, as well as social, policy, institutional and financial innovations. However, whatever form it takes, innovation in the forest sector ultimately aims to enhance the economic, environmental, and social performance of forest-based systems.<br /><br /><strong>What is the role of science?</strong> Lyndall highlighted the critical role of science in scaling up innovation, stressing that <i>"Science provides for us the foundational knowledge that we need to understand all the different aspects of the forests and the forest sector. This evidence base is essential for ensuring that the innovations that we develop, be they technological, be they forest management or governance, are both effective but also inclusive and that they're also sustainable. We can't do this without science."</i><br /><br /><strong>Are there any regional differences?</strong> Rajat elaborated on regional differences in innovation and stressed that, "<i>Meaningful innovation in the forest sector must flow in both directions. That is not only from the Global North to the Global South, but between the Global North and the Global South. Our call for papers for the Special Issue on Governance analyses of forest-based value and supply chains<https://link.springer.com/collections/cchejbighh> in the Small Scale Forestry<https://link.springer.com/journal/11842> journal is now open until December 2026!
This special issue seeks to advance analytical frameworks, methods, and empirical cases dealing with complex governance dynamics of forest-based supply and values chains, from forest-based harvesters to processors and consumers. Empirical value chain governance studies, including those in the forestry sector, have heavily relied on the classification of a) a buyer- or producer-driven one, or b) strong or weak bargaining power. These classifications rather serve chain actors involved in global trade and do not reveal the nuanced power dynamics or other definitions of value beyond economic ones. Forest product chains stemming from small-scale production systems may imply i) domestically-traded goods, ii) governance dynamics and nuances that may not have been captured by such a categorical distinction, and iii) inherent multiple social, cultural, and ecological values.
We welcome papers on:
* Power relations, participation, and equity in forest-based value chains, including the roles of small-scale forest farmers, Indigenous and local actors, and small and medium-sized enterprises
* Governance arrangements, policy instruments, and regulatory frameworks that steer forest-based value and supply chains toward biodiversity protection, or rural development
* Innovations in forest-based chain governance, such as traceability mechanisms, unilateral regulations traceability mechanisms, unilateral regulations, new partnerships, cooperative structures, certification, payment schemes for ecosystem services, and digitalization that reconfigure value creation and power relations along forest-based chains.
We encourage interdisciplinary work that:
* Combines qualitative and quantitative methods to analyze governance processes, performance, and outcomes in forest-based chains (e.g., case studies, comparative analyses, network analysis, participatory approaches)
* Bridges socio-political, economic and institutional perspectives, including value chain and value network approaches, innovation studies, and political ecology.
Given the journal's profile, contributions should explicitly address small-scale forestry by:
* Addressing how governance arrangements affect small-scale producers and their livelihoods, and other actors in local, regional, or global forest-based value and supply chains
* Exploring opportunities and constraints for small-scale forestry to capture more value, diversify products, and enhance resilience under changing markets, policies, and societal contexts.

In this talk, Doctoral Researcher Anna Ott will explore how different ways of knowing, relating to, and using Arctic forests come into tension in the Indigenous Sámi homeland (Sápmi).
Anna Ott is currently finalizing her doctoral thesis at the University of Lapland, Finland. Her dissertation examines the transformative potential of land‑use politics and practices of the Indigenous Sámi people. More specifically, her research investigates how land use in Northern Finland is shaped by ontological conflict, and how Sámi political practices support transitions toward alternative ways of living in and with the land.
In her presentation, she will focus on the ontological conflict over forests involving Sámi reindeer herders, the Finnish state, and private forest owners, and will discuss Rights of Nature as a potential approach to mitigating environmental conflicts in the Arctic Sámi territories.
This event is part of a broader effort within RG 6.05.00 to create a global platform for discussing forest‑related conflicts, their cultural and political dimensions, and pathways toward more just and sustainable forest futures. Session lasts one hour and begins with a 20 minute guest presentation. After the talk, participants are encouraged to join an open discussion.

new FP&E Commentary applying a "horizon scan" on 2026 forest-related livelihood issues

Dear researchers in social and human aspects of forests,
Some renowned colleagues from within the FLARE network just applied a very interesting study format, i.e. horizon scanning, and published it with us as an open access FP&E Commentary article here: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1389934126000432 .
This horizon scan approach is like a little Delphi study, through which the authors are "forecasting" emerging and upcoming forest-related livelihood issues for a commencing calendar year.
I am flagging this one particular article only in order to introduce this interesting study format to our peers. Some of you, who hold extensive and long-standing expert networks in your respective fields, might consider doing a similarly well-done exercise on an identifiable and discernable issue or field of your expertise. In such event, the FP&E article type "Commentary - Research Trends" might be a suitable format, which we warmly welcome.

<p>In our new <i>Season 3 of Branching out: the forest podcast</i>, we explore how scientists collaborate across disciplines to tackle emerging topics. This work happens through IUFRO Task Forces. We kick off the Season with the topic of <strong>bioeconomy</strong> and the <i>Task Force on Building an Integrated Vision of the Forest-Based Sector within a Bioeconomy</i>.<br /><br />Host <strong>Gerda Wolfrum</strong> and co-host <strong>Fernanda Gonzalez</strong> from IUFRO HQ spoke with <strong>Ivana Živojinović</strong>, a senior scientist at BOKU University in Vienna (Institute of Forest, Environmental and Natural Resource Policy and the Center for Bioeconomy), and <strong>Ricardo Vargas Carpintero</strong>, who recently completed his PhD at the University of Hohenheim, Germany and is now based in Colombia. They shared their insights on how the forest-based sector can contribute to a bioeconomy.<br /><br />The concept of bioeconomy is not new, but it has broadened into a more holistic framing that connects the ways how we produce, how we use and value biological resources within larger sustainability goals. The aim is to provide sustainable solutions across different economic sectors, by shifting from fossil-based inputs and linear economical models towards circular and regenerative systems. <br /><br />Ivana explained, "<i>This includes aspects of reuse, recycling, using resource efficiency, and ensuring that value creation does not come at the expense of biodiversity, of water or even people's rights and livelihoods</i>." Bioeconomy is not a single model; countries and regions emphasize different pathways.<br /><br />In this context, Ricardo talked about the situation in Latin America where biodiversity plays a key role. He said, <i>"Incorporating biodiversity in the bioeconomy to create economic value and contribute to the environment, for example, by restoring degraded lands or providing ecosystem services such as carbon sequestration, is one of these visions that is quite important in the Latin American context."</i> <br /><br />The forest-based sector is integral to a bioeconomy, but its scope is still quite narrow and mainly focused on timber, fiber and carbon. To make the scope of the forest sector within a bioeconomy broader and multifunctional, further innovation - not only technical or technological innovation, also institutional, organizational and social innovation – is required. In addition, cooperation between policymakers, public sector, primary producers, industry, and society must be enhanced. As Ivana pointed out, "<i>Bioeconomy transition as such will be successful only if it's coherent and inclusive and really grounded in diversity. We invite urban forestry practitioners, researchers, and decision-makers working across urban, peri-urban, and community settings to submit their proposals. Contributions should address one or more of the conference sub-themes and aim to deepen collective knowledge on how urban forests can adapt, evolve, and flourish in the face of rapid environmental and social change.
