<p>In Season 3<i> </i>of<i> Branching out: the forest podcast</i>, we explore how scientists in IUFRO collaborate across disciplines to tackle emerging topics through Task Forces. We continue the Season with the <a href="http://url8074.news.iufro.org/ls/click?upn=u001.C6oMVBOd8j-2B22go-2BVoSNM8X…><u>Task Force on Gender Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in Forest-Related Sectors</u></a> - ForGEDI.<br /><br />Host <i>Gerda Wolfrum</i> from IUFRO Headquarters and co-host <i>Bashir Isiya, </i>Nigeria, from the International Forestry Students' Association (IFSA), spoke with Task Force co-leads <i>Todora Rogelja</i> from the University of Padova, Italy, and <i>Rattiya Lippe</i> from the Thuenen Institute of Forestry, Germany. <br /><br />The conversation highlighted <strong>entrenched power and governance structures</strong> that determine who is excluded from participation and denied rights, including access to forest resources. Globally, there are many examples of women, Indigenous Peoples, local communities, youth, and other groups that have managed forests well yet remain underrepresented in decision-making. <br /><br /><i>"Without including the perspectives of those who directly depend on the forest and who nurture the forest the most, policy decisions are incomplete and often ineffective and reinforce already existing inequalities,"</i><strong> </strong>said <i><strong>Todora Rogelja</strong></i>.<br /><br />There are also many success stories about how GEDI can be integrated into forest-related decision making. <i><strong>Rattiya Lippe</strong></i> refers to a book titled <a href="http://url8074.news.iufro.org/ls/click?upn=u001.C6oMVBOd8j-2B22go-2BVoSNMxU…><u>Women as stewards of forests</u></a> (Tropenbos International, Tropical Forest Issues, edited by Todora Rogelja and Luca Kroese). She highlights the story of an Indonesian woman called <i>Westhi Wigaringtyas</i> or <i>Wiga</i> who helped to significantly increase women's participation in decision making and forest management. <br /><br />In the end, as <i><strong>Rattiya</strong></i> put it, "<i>advancing gender equity, diversity and inclusion is not just about inviting more people to the table or representing diversity symbolically. Dear All,
Join the global forest health research community in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, from August 9-13, 2027, for the IUFRO conference hosted by Division 7 - Forest Health under the theme "Global Partnerships and Sustainability." We welcome the participation of units from other IUFRO Divisions to encourage cross-disciplinary collaboration under the conference theme.
This international conference will bring together researchers from around the world who are dedicated to advancing the understanding and stewardship of healthy forest ecosystems. Participants will have the opportunity to showcase their research, exchange ideas, and build meaningful collaborations across all IUFRO divisions. We especially emphasize the importance of global and community partnerships in advancing sustainable forest management, and invite all perspectives, including Indigenous knowledge systems and research approaches.
With a strong focus on forest health, the conference will feature sessions on forest insects and pathogens, invasive species, pest management, and forest damage assessment. Researchers working in complementary fields, including silviculture, forest genetics, and biodiversity, are warmly invited to contribute to this dynamic and interdisciplinary scientific program. In line with the conference theme, contributions that explore sustainability through cross-disciplinary collaboration are welcome. We hope that you are able to join us in Edmonton in 2027.

In this session, Doctoral Researcher Anna Ott will explore how different ways of knowing, relating to, and using Arctic forests come into tension in the Indigenous Sámi homeland (Sápmi).
Anna Ott is currently finalizing her doctoral thesis at the University of Lapland, Finland. Her dissertation examines the transformative potential of land use politics and practices of the Indigenous Sámi people. More specifically, her research investigates how land use in Northern Finland is shaped by ontological conflict, and how Sámi political practices support transitions toward alternative ways of living in and with the land.
In her presentation, she will focus on ontological conflicts over forests involving Sámi reindeer herders, the Finnish state, and private forest owners, and will discuss Rights of Nature as one potential approach to mitigating environmental conflicts in the Arctic Sámi territories.
In addition to this talk, we are delighted to welcome Inka Musta, CEO of Luontoa and Member of the Executive Board of the Sámi Parliament, as a second speaker.
Inka Musta has extensive experience in strategic leadership in nature and sustainability work, as well as in managing stakeholder relationships and sustainability risks. In her role as a member of the Sámi Parliament—the supreme political body of the Indigenous Sámi in Finland—she represents Sámi perspectives in both national and international contexts. Her contribution will bring valuable practical and political insights into current forest-related conflicts and governance challenges in Sámi territories.
This event is part of a broader effort within RG 6.05.00 to create a global platform for discussing forest-related conflicts, their cultural and political dimensions, and pathways toward more just and sustainable forest futures.
The session lasts one hour and begins with a 20‑minute guest presentation, followed by an open discussion.

<p>In Season 3<i> </i>of<i> Branching out: the forest podcast</i>, we explore how scientists in IUFRO collaborate across disciplines to tackle emerging topics through Task Forces. We continue the Season with the topic of <i>innovation</i> and the <i>Task Force on Scaling-Up Science-based Forest Sector Innovation.</i><br /><br />Host <i>Gerda Wolfrum</i> from IUFRO HQ and co-host <i>Leila Rossa Mouawad </i>from the American University of Beirut, Lebanon, and Deputy Coordinator of IUFRO's Communication Working Party, spoke with Task Force co-leads <i>Lyndall Bull</i>, an Australian forester with expertise in innovation and the bioeconomy trained at the University of Melbourne, and <i>Rajat Panwar</i>, a professor of responsible and sustainable business at Oregon State University, USA. They emphasized the importance of supporting the scaling up of science‑based innovation in the forest sector by raising awareness, strengthening education and communication, and promoting collaboration and partnerships among multiple stakeholders.<br /><br /><strong>Why is innovation important?</strong> The world's forests face growing pressure mainly from climate‑related stresses while demand for wood and non‑wood products continues to rise. To keep forests healthy, resilient, and able to provide essential goods and services, innovation is vital. It is important to understand that innovation comes in a variety of forms, from technological and digital advances to improved forest and land management practices, as well as social, policy, institutional and financial innovations. However, whatever form it takes, innovation in the forest sector ultimately aims to enhance the economic, environmental, and social performance of forest-based systems.<br /><br /><strong>What is the role of science?</strong> Lyndall highlighted the critical role of science in scaling up innovation, stressing that <i>"Science provides for us the foundational knowledge that we need to understand all the different aspects of the forests and the forest sector. This evidence base is essential for ensuring that the innovations that we develop, be they technological, be they forest management or governance, are both effective but also inclusive and that they're also sustainable. We can't do this without science."</i><br /><br /><strong>Are there any regional differences?</strong> Rajat elaborated on regional differences in innovation and stressed that, "<i>Meaningful innovation in the forest sector must flow in both directions. That is not only from the Global North to the Global South, but between the Global North and the Global South. Our call for papers for the Special Issue on Governance analyses of forest-based value and supply chains<https://link.springer.com/collections/cchejbighh> in the Small Scale Forestry<https://link.springer.com/journal/11842> journal is now open until December 2026!
This special issue seeks to advance analytical frameworks, methods, and empirical cases dealing with complex governance dynamics of forest-based supply and values chains, from forest-based harvesters to processors and consumers. Empirical value chain governance studies, including those in the forestry sector, have heavily relied on the classification of a) a buyer- or producer-driven one, or b) strong or weak bargaining power. These classifications rather serve chain actors involved in global trade and do not reveal the nuanced power dynamics or other definitions of value beyond economic ones. Forest product chains stemming from small-scale production systems may imply i) domestically-traded goods, ii) governance dynamics and nuances that may not have been captured by such a categorical distinction, and iii) inherent multiple social, cultural, and ecological values.
We welcome papers on:
* Power relations, participation, and equity in forest-based value chains, including the roles of small-scale forest farmers, Indigenous and local actors, and small and medium-sized enterprises
* Governance arrangements, policy instruments, and regulatory frameworks that steer forest-based value and supply chains toward biodiversity protection, or rural development
* Innovations in forest-based chain governance, such as traceability mechanisms, unilateral regulations traceability mechanisms, unilateral regulations, new partnerships, cooperative structures, certification, payment schemes for ecosystem services, and digitalization that reconfigure value creation and power relations along forest-based chains.
We encourage interdisciplinary work that:
* Combines qualitative and quantitative methods to analyze governance processes, performance, and outcomes in forest-based chains (e.g., case studies, comparative analyses, network analysis, participatory approaches)
* Bridges socio-political, economic and institutional perspectives, including value chain and value network approaches, innovation studies, and political ecology.
Given the journal's profile, contributions should explicitly address small-scale forestry by:
* Addressing how governance arrangements affect small-scale producers and their livelihoods, and other actors in local, regional, or global forest-based value and supply chains
* Exploring opportunities and constraints for small-scale forestry to capture more value, diversify products, and enhance resilience under changing markets, policies, and societal contexts.

In this talk, Doctoral Researcher Anna Ott will explore how different ways of knowing, relating to, and using Arctic forests come into tension in the Indigenous Sámi homeland (Sápmi).
Anna Ott is currently finalizing her doctoral thesis at the University of Lapland, Finland. Her dissertation examines the transformative potential of land‑use politics and practices of the Indigenous Sámi people. More specifically, her research investigates how land use in Northern Finland is shaped by ontological conflict, and how Sámi political practices support transitions toward alternative ways of living in and with the land.
In her presentation, she will focus on the ontological conflict over forests involving Sámi reindeer herders, the Finnish state, and private forest owners, and will discuss Rights of Nature as a potential approach to mitigating environmental conflicts in the Arctic Sámi territories.
This event is part of a broader effort within RG 6.05.00 to create a global platform for discussing forest‑related conflicts, their cultural and political dimensions, and pathways toward more just and sustainable forest futures. Session lasts one hour and begins with a 20 minute guest presentation. After the talk, participants are encouraged to join an open discussion.
