<p>Forestry is not just about felling trees, but about how we protect, sustainably manage and restore forests. In the most recent episode of <strong>Branching Out: the Forest Podcast</strong>, hosts <strong>Jose Bolaños</strong> (IUFRO HQ) and <strong>Dante Bertocci </strong>(International Forestry Students' Association, IFSA) talk to one of the Co-Coordinators of the International Union of Forest Research Organizations' (IUFRO) Division 3 - Forest Operations, Engineering, and Management.<br /><br /><strong>René Zamora-Cristales </strong>(Oregon State University and World Resources Institute), Co-Coordinator of Division 3, explains that this Division focuses on how forestry activities are carried out - from seed collection and forest restoration to logging and resource management. He emphasizes that forest operations go far beyond timber harvesting, playing a key role in biodiversity conservation and forest landscape restoration.<br /><br />He also highlights that meeting global restoration targets, such as 350 million ha of forest landscapes by 2030 goal set by the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, requires careful planning. Without proper operations and engineering, even well-intentioned restoration efforts can fall short.<br /><br />Artificial intelligence-powered satellite imagery and drone technology are helping scientists map forests, analyse tree health, and optimize resource use. KSFE-FETEC 2025 Announcement

Dear Colleague,
The International Conference of KSFE-FETEC 2025 will be hosted by Korean
Society of Forest Engineering (KSFE) on June 30 - July 2, 2025 in Seoul,
South Korea. The co-organizers include Forest Engineering and Technologies
Platform (FETEC) and IUFRO Division 3.01.
The KSFE-FETEC 2025 conference is to share and discuss the latest
scientific and professional research work in forest operations and
engineering, focusing on managing forest health, forest fires, landslides,
and biomass utilization, with participation from internationally renowned
researchers, practitioners, and industry stakeholders.
Presentations and papers covering the following topics will be given to
priority:
· Silvicultural treatments to archive various forest management
objectives
· Ecological restoration for forest sustainability
· Forest operations as a tool to manage wildfires and forest health
issues
· Forest roads (planning, design, construction, and maintenance)
· Landslide risk assessment and management
· New technology development and innovation in forest engineering
· Precision forestry
· Application of artificial intelligence (AI) into today’s forest
operations
· Environmental impacts from timber harvesting operations
· Logging safety and ergonomics
· Forest biomass harvesting and utilizations (bioenergy, bio-based
products, etc.)
· General topics in forest engineering
You are invited to submit abstracts for presentation and posters via the
conference website: https://public.thinkonweb.com/sites/ksfe2025. The
deadline for abstract submission is *30 April, 2025*. Submissions will be
reviewed by a scientific committee, and notification of acceptance will be
sent no later than May 15th, 2024.

Notification: Call for nominations of fellows for the second global assessment of biodiversity and ecosystem services
Dear IPBES members, observers and other interested stakeholders,
The IPBES Plenary, in decision IPBES-11/1, approved the undertaking of a second global assessment of biodiversity and ecosystem services.
The overall objective of the second IPBES global assessment of biodiversity and ecosystem services (referred to hereafter as “the second global assessment”) is to assess relevant knowledge that has become available since the publication in 2019 of The Global Assessment Report on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services and to assess progress towards achieving the goals of sustainability and living in harmony with nature. The second global assessment will strengthen the science-policy interface on biodiversity and nature’s contributions to people on a range of spatial scales, from the local to the global, by providing the knowledge and the policy support tools needed for informed decision-making. The second global assessment will be delivered in 2028.
Further to the call of nominations of experts for a second global assessment (EM/2025/04<https://ipbes.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=5da0fed71c7e4399fb28ab549&i…>, Governments and other relevant stakeholders are herewith invited to nominate candidates to participate in the IPBES fellowship programme for the second global assessment.
The IPBES fellowship programme, which is part of a larger capacity-building portfolio of activities, targets early-career individuals1 who wish to gain experience by participating in the work of IPBES. Selected fellows will participate in the preparation of the chapter of the assessment for which they are selected, and their contribution will be acknowledged as part of the citation for that chapter. Fellows will attend author meetings and receive training to gain an in-depth understanding of the IPBES assessment processes and the science-policy interface. Fellows will also be paired up with a mentor for the assessment period.
The assessment will be conducted in line with the procedures for IPBES deliverables set out in decision IPBES-3/3, annex I (available here<https://ipbes.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=5da0fed71c7e4399fb28ab549&i…>) and based on the scoping report for the assessment (available here<https://ipbes.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=5da0fed71c7e4399fb28ab549&i…>).
IPBES is seeking fellows who have experience in regional and global analyses relating to nature and nature’s contributions to people in terrestrial, inland water, coastal and marine ecosystems. They should have expertise relevant to the global assessment of biodiversity and ecosystem services in one or more disciplines within natural science, social science or humanities. IPBES is, in particular, seeking fellows with an interdisciplinary background. IPBES is also looking for fellows on Indigenous and local knowledge.
Governments and relevant stakeholders are invited to include in their nominations candidates with diverse backgrounds and expertise, and ensure gender balance in their nominations.
All nominated candidates (nominees) need to be available to attend the relevant author meetings, training workshops and induction day for fellows, with the induction day and first author meeting tentatively scheduled for end of November 2025.
All Governments and relevant organizations or institutions are encouraged to submit nominations; nominating organizations or institutions are not required to have been admitted to the Plenary of IPBES as an observer. Please help us to disseminate this call for nominations of fellows widely.

Please note that the nomination form is in English only and applications should be submitted in English, as the assessment process will be conducted in English;
* Approval and formal nomination (Governments/organizations): The nominating Government or organization (nominator) indicated by the nominee will receive an email with a link to the nomination form and will be invited to approve and submit the nominations in the web portal;
* After nomination: Nominators and nominees will receive confirmation via email once the nomination has been submitted by the nominator.
Interested early-career individuals wishing to be nominated by a Government are encouraged to contact their IPBES National Focal Point (https://www.ipbes.net/national-focal-points<https://ipbes.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=5da0fed71c7e4399fb28ab549&i…>) regarding any country specific processes or deadlines and are requested to fill out their application form by 28 March 2025.
Nominators (Governments or organizations) should submit the nominations of all nominees, which they would like to support, before 6 April 2025. Early nominations ahead of this deadline are encouraged. Fellows will be selected by the management committee of the second global assessment, which includes the co-chairs of the assessment and members of the IPBES Bureau and Multidisciplinary Expert Panel.

The dialogue meeting is scheduled for 12 March 2025, 1 p.m. CET. More information will follow shortly.

Call for papers: Special Issue on Mining and the Forest
The preoccupation with shrinking forests has existed for a long time. Today, deforestation and forest degradation are critical issues because forests are not only habitats for biodiversity but also act as aboveground and underground carbon sinks, influencing global weather patterns while providing livelihoods for many people, especially the poorest.
Meeting climate goals requires halting deforestation while implementing low-carbon technologies that rely on mineral ores. One challenge is that the necessary transition increases the pressure on the forests since many forest landscapes contain numerous ores. While other drivers, such as agriculture, often overshadow their contribution to global deforestation, mining activities trigger direct and indirect pressures on forest ecosystems. Mining fuels forest clearances and fosters population shifts: people may be forced to quit their land and relocate, and legal and illegal mining generates new employment opportunities. Moreover, a growing body of literature highlights the urgent need to restore forested landscapes impacted by mining activities worldwide.
In the urgent context of the fight against global warming and protection of the environment, an innovative concept is emerging, namely Forest-Smart Mining, implying mining that recognizes and understands the relationship between forests and other land uses while actively seeking to reduce the damage caused by the latter. Therefore, smart mining requires an understanding of forest ecology and communities, including ecosystem services. However, forests and mining are often considered competing resources due to optimal valuation and management challenges.
The special issue aims to attract cutting-edge research on how mining activities interact with forest preservation in developed and developing countries. It welcomes contributions that:
* Assess the impact of mining on forests and forest-dependent livelihoods.
* Explore the design and implementation of forest-smart mining policies.
* Address the challenges of restoring forest landscapes affected by mining.
The special issue is open to studies employing various methodologies, including economic analytical tools, qualitative and quantitative econometric research, simulation or economic modelling, spatial analysis, and country-specific and cross-country studies.
Submission guidelines
Deadline for submission: June 30, 2025. Manuscripts must adhere to the Journal of Forest Economics guidelines found on the Journal's website. Authors submit their manuscript through the Journal's electronic system https://jfe.manuscriptmanager.net/. When submitting your contribution to the special issue, please select the manuscript type "Special Issue on Mining and the Forest". The submitted manuscript will undergo the Journal's peer-review process.

Dear Colleagues in Precision Forestry
This is more or less a final reminder for registration for the upcoming Precision Forestry Symposium, to be held here in Stellenbosch ( just outside Cape Town), South Africa, 5-7 February, 2025.
We have a very interesting programme lined up, starting with a PhD workshop, a day of commercial workshops, and three days of presentations in the beautiful Winelands of the western Cape. Keynote speakers include Div 3 co-coordinator, Prof. Ola Lindroos, a Precision Forestry expert from a large industrial plantation owner, Ms Miranda Wilson, and the Director of School for Data Science and Computational learning here at Stellenbosch University, Prof. Kanshu Rajaratnam.
Commercial workshops will include sessions with amongst others, Remsoft, Microforest, Softree (RoadEng) and Timbeter.
