NUTRIENT DYNAMICS OF PLANTED FORESTS, 27-28 November, 2012
Vancouver, Washington, USA (10 miles from the Portland, Oregon airport).
This IUFRO symposium features several expert speakers from around the world and is intended to provide a forum on the principles of nutrition in nursery seedlings and juvenile forest trees. Emphasis will be placed on the development of effective and environmentally sound technologies to optimize seedling quality and promote reforestation and forest restoration operations. The first day will focus on Nutrition in the Nursery and at Field Establishment and the second day will focus on Juvenile Stand Nutrition. The program is aimed toward an international audience of nursery and forest practitioners, scientists, and educators. Selected papers will be published as a special issue in the international journal, New Forests.
The symposium is being organized by Western Forestry and Conservation Association, Purdue University, and USDA Forest Service with support from IUFRO divisions 1.01.03 (Temperate Forest Regeneration), 1.06.00 (Restoration of Degraded Sites), and 3.02.00 (Stand Establishment and Treatment). Greetings IUFRO Colleagues,
The Small-scale Forestry conference is nearly upon us! At this time we have
roughly 85 participants from 18 countries coming to join us in Amherst,
Massachusetts, USA. We are very much looking forward to hosting you all
here in southern New England.
Hopefully by now everyone has made hotel accommodations and knows how
they'll be getting to us. For last minute travel details, visit
http://iufrossf2012.org/travel-information/.
ORAL PRESENTATIONS
An updated program is available at
http://iufrossf2012.files.wordpress.com/2012/08/iufro-ssf-2012-program-20120
820.pdf, highlighting the 64 talks speakers are slated to present. For
those of you among the 64, time for presentations will be 20 minutes with
5-10 minutes for questions. Our session moderators will work hard to keep
the program on track, and moving according to schedule.
We would like to ask those of you who will be using PowerPoint, to please
email your presentations to <mailto:info@familyforestresearchcenter.org>
info(a)familyforestresearchcenter.org by Wednesday September 19th,
and also to bring a copy on a flash drive/memory stick as a back-up. If you
cannot send it to us by the 19th, please bring it on a flash drive and
arrive at the room in which you will be speaking at least 15 minutes prior
to the start of the track session.
We would also like to ask all oral presenters to send a brief biographical
sketch that can be used by the session moderator to introduce you to
<mailto:info@familyforestresearchcenter.org>
info(a)familyforestresearchcenter.org by September 19th. A few lines or short
paragraph is adequate.
Those 35 years of age or younger will be eligible for the Outstanding Young
Researcher Award. Please let us know if you are 35 or under.
POSTER PRESENTATIONS
We will be conducting our poster session on Monday September 24th, just
before lunch. Participants presenting posters should plan on hanging their
posters prior to the 8:30am plenary session. Tackable surface for bulletin
boards on which posters will be hung is four feet by four feet (1.22 meters
by 1.22 meters). If presenters would like to take up more than one bulletin
board, they may do so, but please send an email request to
info(a)familyforestresearchcenter.org no later than Wednesday Sept 19th.
Poster presenters should be prepared to give a 5-10 talk on their posters
during the session.
OTHER CONFERENCE DETAILS
All breakfasts & lunches are included in the registration package, as is
dinner on Sunday the 23rd and Wednesday the 26th. The only meals for which
participants will be on their own are dinners Monday & Tuesday evenings
(Sept 24 & 25). Sunday's opening reception will be held at our local brew
pub: the Amherst Brewing Company (ABC). Participants attending the
reception should plan to pick up their registration packets at that time
(unless also attending the pre-conference workshop Saturday & Sunday).
There are a number of options for travel to ABC. A guided walk will be
offered for those interested, leaving the Campus Center Way Circle meeting
spot (see map below) at 4:30pm. This walk is estimated to talk roughly one
half-hour. Vans will also be traveling between the meeting spot and ABC
starting at 4:45pm and ending at 8:15pm. For those wishing to make their way
independently, see the map and directions at
http://iufrossf2012.org/travel-information/getting-here/.
Looking forward to seeing you soon!
