Dear Colleague,
Please find attached to this message the final agenda for the Workshop. As
you will see, for each session, a specific link is provided to join the
meeting. For ease of access, calendar invitations (one for each session)
will also be sent later on today to those who have confirmed their
participation.
As already mentioned in our previous communication below, we have prepared a
short questionnaire that you are kindly invited to fill in to help us better
orient the discussion and identify priorities for action. Here is the link
to the questionnaire: <https://forms.gle/DQyiHWMFHmNWeor5A>
https://forms.gle/DQyiHWMFHmNWeor5A. Please note that the link will remain
active until Tuesday 14 April, in order for us to have time to revise
responses and draft a synthesis report prior to the workshop (answers will
be treated confidentially and will anonimously). Both members participating
in the meeting and those not taking part in the event are invited to fill in
the questionnaire.
We look forward to counting on your participation next week.

Subject: DRAFT AGENDA - XI Workshop of the Silva Mediterranea Working Group
on UPF
Dear Colleague,
As a follow up to my message of Monday 30 March (see below), please find
attached the draft agenda of the XI Workshop of the Silva Mediterranea WG on
UPF.
The workshop will be structured into four 90-minutes sessions:
Session 1 - The Working Group in the framework of Silva Mediterranea
Session 2 - Inspirational UPF projects developed in the Region
Session 3 - Revising activities and work plan
Session 4 - What next?
For Session 2, in particular, the aim is to share information on UPF-related
projects/studies that are either ongoing or currently under development in
the Region at local/national/international level. Should you have
interesting cases to report on (even not directly developed by you), please
let us know by Thursday this week (9 April) in order for us to include your
presentation in the final programme of the event that will be sent out on
Friday. We are also planning to send a short questionnaire to help us
better orient the discussion.
Feel free to share this message within your professional networks,
requesting those who are interested to write to us so that we can include
them in the mailing list for the event.

Objet : MOOC Landscape Ecology: self-paced re-run due to Corona Situation
Self-Paced Re-Run due to Corona Situation
Dear colleagues, dear students,
due to the Corona Situation University teachers and students are in
desperate need of distant learning tools. We thus decided to re-run the MOOC
Landscape Ecology as a self-paced version until Sept. when the next regular
course starts. We would like to give everyone the opportunity to use this
particular time to learn about landscape ecology and to use parts or the
entire course to enrich the current distant learning efforts. Note that this
course is a re-run from our last year's instructor-paced edition. Any
content and notes related to due dates are now irrelevant in the self-paced
mode. And, we cannot provide any support in the discussion sections,
therefore students are requested to help each other. Enjoy the course and
stay safe!
The course features theory, methods and tools to solve landscape-related
environmental problems. Building on introductory theory units, leading
Landscape Ecology professors present case studies from around the world,
highlighting innovative and collaborative approaches.
Head to our course page to find out more:
<https://www.edx.org/course/landscape-ecology-2>
https://www.edx.org/course/landscape-ecology-3
Help us spread the word - please forward this email to interested
colleagues, and post it on social media channels and websites of your
organisations (IALE, IUFRO, IFLA, Landscape Observatory etc.). Thanks!
Best regards,
Felix Kienast

-----Message d'origine-----
Dear all,
A research associate (postdoc) opportunity is available with the Forest
Ecosystems & Society Department at Oregon State University
This postdoctoral position will work with Dr. David Bell (USFS) and Dr. Meg
Krawchuk (OSU) on collaborative research projects in the fields of landscape
fire ecology and modeling, conservation, plant community ecology, and
multi-scale vegetation monitoring in the Pacific Northwest: the Fire Refugia
Project and the Vegetation Change Mapping project.
The Fire Refugia Project focuses on the regional geography and
predictability of fire refugia in late successional forests of the PNW
(http://firerefugia.forestry.oregonstate.edu/).This position will be the
research project lead in scientific analysis and communication of results,
with expertise in landscape fire ecology, forest ecology, geography, and
data analysis.
The Vegetation Change Mapping Project focuses on innovations in remote
sensing of forest status and change in support of monitoring the effects of
forest disturbance on forest ecosystems. This position will provide
scientific and technical leadership of components of regional vegetation
monitoring research and development in the Landscape Ecology, Modeling,
Mapping & Analysis team (LEMMA; https://lemma.forestry.oregonstate.edu/).

Objet : hiring a PhD student or postdoc in disturbance ecology
*PhD student or Postdoctoral Researcher to study climate change and
disturbances*
We have an excellent opportunity for a PhD student or postdoctoral researcher to estimate the ability of arctic and boreal ecosystems to keep pace with climate change, given rising temperatures, thawing permafrost and multiple, interacting disturbances in Siberian Russia ( https://www.melissalucash.com/projects/siberia). Our project is funded by the National Science Foundation ( https://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward?AWD_ID=1844435).
The position will be located at Portland State University in Portland, OR, but the position will require periodic travel to the US Forest Service Institute for Applied Ecosystems in Wisconsin. The selected candidate will also travel with the PIs to meet with collaborators at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Austria.
The successful candidate would join our well-renowned research group led by Drs. Melissa Lucash, Eric Gustafson, Forest Hoffman, Brian Sturtevant, Joshua Fu, Dmitry Schepaschenko, and Anatoly Shvidenko. This international and interdisciplinary team is comprised of landscape ecologists, forest ecologists, and spatial modelers at Portland State University, the U.S.
Forest Service, Oak Ridge National Lab, University of Tennessee -Knoxville and IIASA in Laxenburg, Austria.
Capitalizing on a rich and underutilized empirical dataset of Siberia, the successful candidate will project future species composition and C dynamics under climate change using a landscape-scale forest simulation model (LANDIS-II). The candidate will also collaborate with a postdoc at the University of Tennessee and Oak Ridge National Lab who will use CLM-FATES to estimate changes in plant functional groups, C dynamics and vegetation-climate feedbacks.
Required qualifications:
· M.S. or Ph.D. in Biogeochemistry, Forestry, Geography or
associated fields
· excellent programming skills in R and/or ArcMap
· excellent writing skills
· experience in data mining of ecological, environmental or climatic
databases.
Modeling experience is not essential for this position. We expect to help the candidate become familiar with LANDIS-II.
Compensation for the PhD student will be $26,000 (plus tuition) and $50,000 for the postdoctoral scholar. The position is funded for two years for a postdoc and three years for a PhD student and will begin as early as April 1, 2020, but the start date can be negotiated.
If applying as a postdoc, please apply here:
https://jobs.hrc.pdx.edu/postings/31666
If applying as a PhD student, please submit a cover letter, CV, and list of three references to Dr. Lucash by email (lucash(a)pdx.edu) with the subject line “PhD student application- Siberia”. Letters may be requested if candidates advance to the final stage of the application process.
