Call for Submissions
IK: Other Ways of Knowing is soliciting research articles and book reviews for its Fall 2015 issue as well as future issues. Deadline for inclusion in the Fall issue is August 1, 2015.
About the journal. This is an electronic, multidisciplinary, peer-reviewed, open access journal that publishes original research articles as well as review articles in all areas of indigenous knowledge from a global perspective. The journal is published twice yearly by the Pennsylvania State University Libraries, and is co-sponsored by the Penn State Libraries and the Penn State Interinstitutional Center for Indigenous Knowledge (ICIK). The spring issue is guest-edited and theme-based; the fall issue is an open content issue edited by the Penn State Libraries and ICIK team.
Indigenous knowledge is an emerging area of study that focuses on the ways of knowing, seeing, and thinking that are passed down orally from generation to generation. These ways of understanding reflect thousands of years of experimentation and innovation in topics like agriculture, animal husbandry, entomophagy, biomimicry, child rearing practices, education systems, herbal and other traditional medicines, natural resource management and resilience to climate change—among many other categories.
These ways of knowing are particularly important in the era of globalization, a time in which indigenous knowledge as intellectual property is acquiring new significance in the search for answers to many of the world’s most vexing problems: disease, famine, ethnic conflict, and poverty. Indigenous knowledge has value, not only for the culture in which it develops, but also for scientists and planners seeking solutions to community problems.
As a forum for the sharing of practical knowledge and local wisdom for the benefit of all peoples, this journal is of special interest to development professionals who treasure this local knowledge, finding it extremely useful in solving complex problems of health, agriculture, education, and the environment, both in developed and in developing countries.
Manuscripts. Submissions must be original, not previously published, nor submitted for publication in another journal. Research articles should be 5,000-15,000 words in length. Book reviews should be 1,500-2,000 words in length.
All manuscripts are subject to double blind peer review. Photographs, and other visual materials, are highly encouraged for each submission. All manuscripts should be in English. However, if the author is indigenous, a manuscript in the indigenous language will be accepted if an English translation is also provided. Both the indigenous and English language versions will be published. Reviewers will use the English version in assessing the manuscript. Forest Science is a peer-reviewed journal publishing fundamental and applied research that explores all aspects of natural and social sciences as they apply to the function and management of the forested ecosystems of the world. Topics include silviculture, forest management, biometrics, economics, entomology & pathology, fire & fuels management, forest ecology, genetics & tree improvement, geospatial technologies, harvesting & utilization, landscape ecology, operations research, forest policy, physiology, recreation, social sciences, soils & hydrology, and wildlife management.
Forest Science currently has an editorial board comprised of 1 editor-in-chief, 3 applied research editors, and over 75 associate editors specializing in 18 areas of forestry and natural resources. Associate editors are responsible for assisting the editor in soliciting and developing articles of interest to forestry and natural resource researchers, academicians, and professionals, land managers, and policy makers; obtaining competent, timely reviews of assigned papers; and ensuring that the topics covered in Forest Science are balanced across discipline and employment categories.
In more specific terms, there are two broad areas of responsibility. The first is the peer-review process, coordinating the review of scientific and technical manuscripts in the associate editor’s field that have been submitted to Forest Science for publication—generally by distributing them to three authorities in the relevant subject areas. To fulfill this task, associate editors must know the different subfields within his or her specialty, and who practices in these subfields, so that papers can be sent to appropriate, knowledgeable reviewers. Associate editors will be notified by the web-based peer review system, Rapid Review, that a manuscript has been sent for review. It is expected that the associate editor acknowledge the assignment and assign reviewers within 4 business days of receipt. Reviewers are asked to accept or decline a review assignment within 2 business days and return completed reviews within 15 business days; associate editors are expected to ensure that assignments are acknowledged and comments are returned in a timely manner. Associate editors are asked to review reviewer comments and ensure that they are delivered in a professional and constructive manner, then synthesize these comments for the Forest Science editor. If the reviewers should disagree markedly, the associate editor should recommend which course to take (accept, ask for revision, or reject), and provide guidance that the authors can follow when preparing their revision.
The second area concerns the broader, less-defined role of consulting with and advising the Forest Science editor-in-chief in determining the content, direction, and focus of Forest Science, particularly in the specialties that he or she is responsible for. This would include being aware of new developments in the field, current controversies, and subjects that have not been adequately covered in Forest Science. Associate editors are encouraged to suggest possible topics and authors for appropriate articles.

#FacesOfTheForest Photo Contest – Winning photos to be part of an exhibition at the Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site during IV Mediterranean Forest Week in Barcelona.
The first edition of the #FacesOfTheForest Photo Contest, launched by the Forest Communicators Network in the Mediterranean Region and Near East (FCNMedNE), is organised in the framework of the 2015 International Day of Forests. This year’s theme is “Forests | Climate | Change”, climate change being one of the biggest challenges facing our planet while the role of our forests in mitigation needs to be more clearly understood.
The #FacesOfTheForest Photo Contest aims at highlighting the vital role of the forests in the development of forest communities. Photos should be taken in the forest in Mediterranean and Near Eastern countries and should reflect the role played by forest people and forests in general on the following topic(s): income generation; mitigation of climate change; water conservation; soil conservation; sustainable development; social equity, gender balance; women empowerment; youth development.

Forest governance research
Research into forest governance issues is a popular and timely endeavour. The high relevance of international forest governance research is further reflected by the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) dedicating to this very topic its group 9.05 on Forest Policy and Governance, which includes a special working group 9.05.02 on Forest Governance.
Forest governance research can be conceptualized as social science inquiry into forest-related decisions, their implementation and resulting effects within a given institutional setting.
In order to arrive at relevant and valid conclusions, social science inquiry, more than their physical sciences counterparts, need to clearly define the terms, concepts and methodological frameworks which they apply. Unfortunately, this is not easily and, hence, not always done in forest governance research, running the risk of rendering the concept of forest governance a buzzword, rather than advancing scientific rigor.
Defining forest governance
In the abovementioned sense we propose a wide definition of forest governance, which researchers may find useful to build upon and to further develop according to their empirical cases. Accordingly, forest governance comprises a) all formal and informal, public and private regulatory structures, i.e. institutions consisting of rules, norms, principles, decision procedures, concerning forests, their utilisation and their conservation, b) the interactions between public and private actors therein and c) the effects of either on forests.
Assessing forest governance
Assessing forest governance can be done as a scientific endeavour conducted within the scientific realm, or as a practical enterprise undertaken by actors in the field of forest conservation and utilisation practices.
Within the scientific realm, the researchers are guided by methodological frameworks, which they develop intersubjectively in order to advance scientific knowledge about real world phenomena. There are two broad approaches for such scientific analyses: Analytical studies are concerned with the mere reflection of these phenomena and their explanation and strive for developing value-free methodological frameworks. In contrast, normative analyses imply value judgements on desirable conditions within their methodological frameworks and often develop recommendations towards selected ends. In both approaches, the researchers are free to define their concepts and hypotheses on potential causalities following scientific thought and rigour.
On the contrary, practice-oriented assessments of forest governance inherently imply value judgements which are closely related to the interests of the authors’ organisations developing the methodological frameworks. Recently, a number of such practice-oriented frameworks for assessing forest governance have been developed (FAO 2014, WRI 2013). In such works, value judgements are an implicit or even explicit part of the methodological framework. WRI (2013), for example, build on the normative concept of good forest governance. This does not mean that such assessments are non-scientific; they often are a combination of scientific and practical aspects which are integrated and through this provide for added value to real world challenges .
