First Annual FLARE Network Conference
27-30, November 2015
Musee de l’Homme (Paris, France)
In early December, Paris will host the Conference of Parties on Climate Change. The Musee de l’Homme Research Group on Social and Natural Evolution, theInternational Forestry Resources and Institutions (IFRI) research network (coordinated from the School of Natural Resource and Environment at the University of Michigan), and Program on Forests of the World Bank (PROFOR) announce the first annual conference of the FLARE (Forests and Livelihoods: Assessment, Research, and Engagement) network. FLARE aims to advance cutting edge knowledge and practices regarding forest-based livelihoods, biodiversity, and climate change. The meeting will help improve the understanding of the approaches, methods, tools, and indicators to assess how, where, and why governance of forest and forest mosaics for improving livelihoods works, and how it can be strengthened.
We invite proposals focusing on the relationship between forests and livelihoods, the different ways in which forests are imagined, accessed, used, and governed, and the effects of attempts to reshape existing relationships. In particular, we are interested in the work of practitioners and scholars who work at the interface of forest conservation and livelihoods with the goal of sharing knowledge about their experiences and findings. We expect papers presented at the meeting to: use qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods and evidence to report on findings; examine tradeoffs and synergies in forest management and outcomes; and generate a conversation to promote greater visibility and use of key findings, methods, data, and experiences of researchers, practitioners, and decision makers alike. The conference aims to produce a summary document on the state of impact assessment and monitoring efforts, and the impacts of forestry interventions on livelihoods and biodiversity.
CONFERENCE THEMES
Proposals for oral presentations, lightning talks, posters, and workshops can address one or more of the following six sub-themes related to forests and livelihoods: 1) Governance and Landscapes; 2) Agricultural Commodities; 3) Social and Biological Aspects of Forest Dependence; 4) Impact Evaluations; 5) Pathways to Prosperity; 6) Climate
Interested participants are invited to submit abstracts (no longer than 500 words) of their proposed presentations, posters, or workshops. Abstract submission deadline is July 15, 2015. Notification of acceptance/decline will be given by August 1, 2015.
For more information on the FLARE network and the conference themes, and to submit your abstract, please go to the Events page of IFRI’s website, and select the FLARE Community of Practice Conference: http://www.ifriresearch.net/category/events/

Colleagues! Scientists!
Forest research projects are often carried out without the public knowing much about them. If you think that your research project deserves more attention than that, here is your chance: showcase your research work in the blog competition of the XXIV World Forestry Congress!
By submitting a blogpost you can help to significantly boost awareness, engagement and investments in forestry in general and on one of the six Congress sub-themes in particular:
* Forests for socioeconomic development and food security
* Building resilience with forests
* Integrating forests and other land uses
* Encouraging product innovation and sustainable trade
* Monitoring forests for better decision-making
* Improving governance by building capacity

Betreff: Call for Submissions for IK: Other Ways of Knowing
_____
Call for Submissions
IK: Other Ways of Knowing is soliciting research articles and book reviews for its Fall 2015 issue as well as future issues. Deadline for inclusion in the Fall issue is August 1, 2015.
About the journal. This is an electronic, multidisciplinary, peer-reviewed, open access journal that publishes original research articles as well as review articles in all areas of indigenous knowledge from a global perspective. The journal is published twice yearly by the Pennsylvania State University Libraries, and is co-sponsored by the Penn State Libraries and the Penn State Interinstitutional Center for Indigenous Knowledge (ICIK). The spring issue is guest-edited and theme-based; the fall issue is an open content issue edited by the Penn State Libraries and ICIK team.
Indigenous knowledge is an emerging area of study that focuses on the ways of knowing, seeing, and thinking that are passed down orally from generation to generation. These ways of understanding reflect thousands of years of experimentation and innovation in topics like agriculture, animal husbandry, entomophagy, biomimicry, child rearing practices, education systems, herbal and other traditional medicines, natural resource management and resilience to climate change—among many other categories.
These ways of knowing are particularly important in the era of globalization, a time in which indigenous knowledge as intellectual property is acquiring new significance in the search for answers to many of the world’s most vexing problems: disease, famine, ethnic conflict, and poverty. Indigenous knowledge has value, not only for the culture in which it develops, but also for scientists and planners seeking solutions to community problems.
As a forum for the sharing of practical knowledge and local wisdom for the benefit of all peoples, this journal is of special interest to development professionals who treasure this local knowledge, finding it extremely useful in solving complex problems of health, agriculture, education, and the environment, both in developed and in developing countries.
Manuscripts. Submissions must be original, not previously published, nor submitted for publication in another journal. Research articles should be 5,000-15,000 words in length. Book reviews should be 1,500-2,000 words in length.
All manuscripts are subject to double blind peer review. Photographs, and other visual materials, are highly encouraged for each submission. All manuscripts should be in English. However, if the author is indigenous, a manuscript in the indigenous language will be accepted if an English translation is also provided. Both the indigenous and English language versions will be published. Reviewers will use the English version in assessing the manuscript. Full submission guidelines are available at the journal’s home page at <http://journals.psu.edu/ik/about/submissions#authorGuidelines> http://journals.psu.edu/ik/about/submissions#authorGuidelines.
We are accepting:
· Original research articles.
· Literature reviews
· Proposals for themed guest edited issues
· Reviews of new resources, including books, music, video, or web materials.
· Poetry, traditional stories, etc.
· Articles about applied indigenous knowledge, e.g., traditional ways of utilizing local flora, insects and other fauna
Please register and submit your manuscript or proposal at http://journals.psu.edu/ik/user/register or, contact the editors Helen Sheehy at hms2(a)psu.edu and Amy Paster at alp4(a)psu.edu
