FORESTs and Global Environmental Changes:
Social-Ecological Systems in Transition
Metz, France | October 5–7, 2027
The FORESTT International Conference invites established scientists, early-career researchers, and doctoral students, as well as forestry professionals and policy experts from around the world to submit abstracts for oral presentations and poster contributions.
Organized by the French research programme on forest resilience (FORESTT), coordinated by INRAE, under the auspices of the International Union of Forest Research Organizations<https://83n2e.r.a.d.sendibm1.com/mk/cl/f/sh/SMK1E8tHeG7uggXtPfjemRjj94tg/1q…> (IUFRO), and in conjunction with major research initiatives (including e.g. the One Forest Vision initiative – OFVi, the Future Forests<https://83n2e.r.a.d.sendibm1.com/mk/cl/f/sh/SMK1E8tHeGEm8pMqapt8sH2T7NTw/Os…> Cluster of Excellence of the University of Freiburg, Germany, the European FOREST Partnership<https://83n2e.r.a.d.sendibm1.com/mk/cl/f/sh/SMK1E8tHeGLdayBnm02cy6LD5g4C/fu…>, as well as several national and European research projects), the conference will provide a unique forum to discuss the resilience of forest social-ecological systems in the face of global environmental change.
Expected to attract 1,000 to 1,200 participants from academia, research organizations, public institutions, the forestry sector, and civil society, the conference will showcase the latest scientific advances while fostering interdisciplinary dialogue on one of the most pressing challenges of our time.
We welcome contributions presenting original research, emerging results, methodological developments, synthesis studies, case studies, innovative applications, and perspectives for future research and practice.
The call for abstracts is now open!
SUBMISSION PROCESS
Authors may submit abstracts for:
🌳Oral presentations
🌳Poster presentations
For each submission, the following information will be required:
🌲Title of the presentation (maximum 20 words)
🌲Name, affiliation, and contact details of the main author (presenter)
🌲Names and affiliations of co-authors
🌲Abstract (maximum 300 words)
🌲Keywords (3–5 keywords)

The abstract submission deadline is December 13, 2026.
All submitted abstracts will undergo scientific review by the symposium organizers. The evaluation will consider scientific quality, originality, relevance to the selected symposium, and contribution to the overall conference theme.
Authors will be notified of the outcome of the review process in late January 2027, before the opening of conference registration in February 2027.

I would like to thank everyone, who was part of our IUFRO RG9.06.00 Symposium Legal aspects of European Forest Sustainable Development in Sopron, Hungary, September 29 – October 2, 2026 organized together with University of Sopron. Congratulations to Norbert Frank and all organizational team from Sopron University for well-organized event and taking care for every detail to make our stay in Sopron pleasant.
It is time to move forward with new opportunities and cooperation:

Description: The session addresses the integration of sustainability assessment methodologies and management systems that support the transition to a circular bioeconomy in forest value chains. It considers how life cycle assessment (LCA), forest certification systems, sustainability indicators and carbon accounting of harvested wood products can be effectively integrated with forest legislation, environmental legislation and policy instruments. Particular attention is paid to regulatory developments related to climate policy, biodiversity strategies, ESG frameworks and circular economy initiatives, which are increasingly influencing the implementation of sustainability indicators in practice. The aim of the papers will be to explore methodological advances in environmental assessment, the role of legal and institutional frameworks and the interaction of scientific tools and governance mechanisms. The session aims to strengthen interdisciplinary dialogue between the wood science, sustainability assessment and forest policy communities, as well as to highlight science-policy interfaces that support climate-smart, legally compliant and circular use of forest resources.
I am truly glad for everybody who is part of our RG 9.06.00 and hope to meet you next time! You are welcome to share all your research ideas on forest and enviornmental legal aspects and wilingness to organize international meetings for our research group!

We continue the Season with the Task Force on <a href="http://url8074.news.iufro.org/ls/click?upn=u001.C6oMVBOd8j-2B22go-2BVoSNM8X…><span style="color:hsl(240,100%,50%);"><strong><u>Post-Conflict Forest Landscape Restoration: Make "It Back Better"</u></strong></span></a> and will learn about impacts of armed conflicts on forests and people and major restoration challenges.<br /><br />Host <i>Gerda Wolfrum</i> from IUFRO Headquarters and co-host <strong>Rodrigo Mendes</strong>, European Forest Institute (EFI), Finland, and IUFRO Communications Working Party Deputy Coordinator, spoke with Task Force co-leads <strong>Marine Elbakidze</strong>, Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, Ukraine, affiliated with SLU and Södertörn University, Sweden, and <strong>Stefan Peters</strong>, Instituto Colombo-Alemán para la Paz (CAPAZ) and University of Giessen, Germany.<br /><br />Post-conflict forest landscape restoration is the process of restoring forests damaged by conflict while supporting community recovery, resilience, reconciliation, justice, and sustainable development through a comprehensive and adaptive recovery strategy. The Task Force seeks to provide scientific knowledge and innovative solutions for understanding the threats to and impacts on forest landscapes in post-conflict settings, thus supporting decision making. <br /><br /><strong>Marine Elbakidze</strong>,<strong> </strong>landscape ecologist by training, emphasized, <i>"When we talk about restoring forests, we are not talking about restoring the trees alone. We are restoring the ecological functions that forests provide and that people depend on. We are talking about resources that can contribute directly to food security, household income and rural livelihoods."</i><br /><br /><strong>Stefan Peters </strong>works a lot on natural resources, on environmental peace building, and looks at the topic from the social science perspective. He noted, <i>"We must take into consideration not only the mid- and long-term impacts on livelihoods, but also those on cultural connections between humans and nature, especially in remote areas where Indigenous Peoples live."</i><br /><br />A key message of the conversation is that post-conflict forest landscape restoration does not automatically mean making it back better. After a war, there is enormous pressure to rebuild quickly, but restoring quickly is not necessarily restoring well. We need to think not only about trees but also about soil, water biodiversity and future risks, and at the same time about the safe forest management and the recovery of institutions and communities.
