Action Research methodologies to collectively deal with experience and utopia

This course focuses on the perspective of sustainability in nature society relations as a continuous process of transition. Transitions are long-term, co-evolutionary and multi-actor processes that require changes both on system and actor level. Action research underlines a connection between theory and practice, between understanding and change, and an active cooperation between researchers and participants, and contributes with methodological approaches that can work within a change perspective.
The course aims to bring together a multidisciplinary group of people interested in action research, in the relation between practice and reflective learning and, broadly, in transition processes, in order to share, discuss, and reflect on their experiences with different methods and activities.

International Conference on New Frontiers of Forest Economics, June
26-30, Zurich, Switzerland. We have four guest speakers and
presentations of 6 others papers. All these presentations will be
focused on some emerging areas of forest economics. Conference program
is available on the conference website.
Now, we are opening the registration for whoever is interested in the
conference. You may like to join us. As we have explained earlier in our
announcement of the conference, every participant of the conference has
to take a responsibility of a discussant of at least one paper. Hence,
all participants will be very active participants. The schedule of the

The registration is open only for 20 people other than the presenters
and organizers. Hence, if you are interested you should register as soon
as possible because the registration will be closed as soon as we reach

Director General
The Center for International Forestry Research advances human wellbeing,
environmental conservation and equity by conducting research to inform
policies and practices that affect forests in developing countries. We are
one of 15 Centers within the Consultative Group on International
Agricultural Research (CGIAR) and the Lead Center of the CGIAR Research
Programme on Forests, Trees and Agroforestry (CRP6). Our headquarters are in
Bogor, Indonesia, and we have offices in Asia, Africa and South America.
Not many research centres have a global engagement with a broad range of
forest-related issues, stress the perspectives of poor countries and
communities, combine policy and research, question conventional wisdom, and
constantly focus on how to have an impact. CIFOR is one of those few.
CIFOR is looking for a Director General who shares our passion for enhancing
the role of forests in human well-being and environmental conservation, and
our commitment to professionalism, innovation, impact, and collaboration.
Principal Accountabilities
The Director General is the Chief Executive Officer of the Center and is
responsible to the Board of Trustees for the overall scientific leadership,
operation and management of CIFOR. The Director General will ensure that
programmes and objectives are properly developed to fulfill the mission of
the Center. For at least the next two years, the Director General will also
ensure the effectiveness and integrity of the Center's leadership of the
CGIAR Research Programme on Forests, Trees and Agroforestry (CRP6).
The Director General will report to the Board of Trustees through the Chair.
The Director General will lead a senior management team consisting of a
Deputy Director General, a Director of the CGIAR Research Programme on
Forests, Trees and Agroforestry (CRP6), three Research Programme Directors,
a Director of Communications and Information Services, a Director of Finance
and Administration, and a Director of Human Resources.
Responsibilities
1. Overall leadership and management:
o Provide vision and insight to the planning and direction of the
Center's research programmes and associated impact pathways
o Position the Center appropriately in various collaborative partnerships
with other organisations, including member Centers of the CGIAR, members of
the Collaborative Partnership on Forests, and other international, regional
and national organisations
o Develop, in collaboration with the management team, strategic and
operational plans for the functioning of the Center and keep these plans
under ongoing review
o Supervise the planning and direction of the Center's research
programmes and other activities to ensure effective programming and project
implementation, analysis and evaluation of on-going programmes
o Ensure that an impact culture exists at CIFOR supported by a rigorous
assessment and project evaluation systems
o Lead and actively oversee the Center's human resources strategy and its
application through high quality management practices, and the recruitment
and retention of highly qualified and appropriately experienced staff
o Ensure that the management team is effective
o Oversee the development of programme and budget submissions for
approval by the Board and endorsement by outside stakeholders as appropriate
o Ensure that the Center's Annual Report is prepared
o Inform the Chairperson of the Board about matters of consequence that
relate to the Center and its mandate
o Exemplify the institutional values (highest scientific and professional
standards, openness, and fairness) through visible leadership behaviors
2. Resource development:
o Develop the overall funding strategies for the Center and coordinate
implementation
o Serve as the primary CIFOR fundraiser through the identification of
strategic opportunities, priorities and the leveraging of networks
o Develop and maintain a donor relations strategy
3. External relations:
o Ensure functional and effective relations with CIFOR's host countries
o Ensure CIFOR has a high profile at key international events related to
forests
o Actively participate in CGIAR activities
o Ensure web presence and media profile cultivated to encourage impact by
influencing policy makers and to support resource mobilisation efforts
4. Science:
o Maintain standing as a global leader in one scientific area through
high profile/impact publications and presentations at high level global
events
5. Fiduciary:
o Ensure compliance with relevant international standards in financial
reporting, governance, intellectual property
o Ensure that the delegation of authority supports clear accountability
o Ensure that annual operational expenditures occur within the overall
framework of the Center's Board-approved Programme of Work and Budget
o Ensure that processes are in place to identify and manage actively
risks, including preparation of an annual risk assessment that is reported
to the Board
6. Board of Trustees:
o Participate fully in Board meetings as a non-voting member
o Ensure that the Board is supported in its role through an effective
Secretariat
o Implement the policies, guidelines and directions determined by the
Board
Authority
The Director General is the legal representative of CIFOR and is authorised
by the Board to sign all deeds, contracts, agreements, and other legal
documents which are necessary to ensure the normal operation of the Center.
Specific Board approval is required of the following:
. CIFOR-wide and programme strategic plans
. Medium Term Plan updates
. Annual Programme of Work and Budget
. Personnel Policies Manual
. Changes in main Center office locations and the associated
agreements (Headquarters, Regional Offices)
. Adjustments to legal structure including formal association with
another legal entity (e.g. joint venture)
. DG compensation including periodic adjustments
. Annual risk assessment
. Annual Center reports
. Annual financial statements
. Appointment of external auditor
Requirements
Education, knowledge and experience
. Advanced university degree in a relevant field with relevant
experience in all aspects of the position
. International reputation for leadership in science, research and
development
. Recognition within the global research community and the various
international processes related to forests
. Proven record of successfully leading and managing
multidisciplinary policy relevant research in developing countries,
including complex international partnerships
. Demonstrated proficiency in resource mobilisation, management of
people and resources, and communication with scientific and policy
communities
. Fluency in written and spoken English and one or more other
languages related to CIFOR's mandate
. A good working knowledge and understanding of the CGIAR is
desirable

Terms and conditions
. The Director General will be based in Bogor, Indonesia. Bogor is
located on the outskirts of Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia. It is a
university town with many scientific research centres.
. The initial employment will be for five years with the possibility
of extension, with an anticipated start date in mid-2012.
. CIFOR offers attractive and internationally competitive

“Cultural values and traditional knowledge in the context of global
change”

During the IUFRO World Congress in Seoul, Korea in August 2010, the Research
Group on Forest History expanded its scope by creating two new Working
Parties to continue the work of the IUFRO Task Force on Traditional Forest
Knowledge (2005-10). This conference will be the first meeting of our new
Research Group.
Forest and agricultural landscape management practices of local communities
based on their traditional knowledge offer insights into principles and
approaches that may be effective in coping with, and adapting to, climate
change in the years ahead. Efforts to mitigate and adapt to climate change,
however, have not yet given adequate attention either to the forest-related
knowledge and practices of traditional communities, or to the interests,
needs and rights of local communities in the formulation of policies and
programmes to combat climate change.
The new draft of the European Common Agricultural Policies 2014-20,
promoting the diversification, rural practices characterized by lower
greenhouse gas emissions, and the conservation of traditional landscapes,
has clear potential for recovery of traditional knowledge and their
landscapes in Europe. However, there is the need to develop appropriate
planning tools for integrating environment and landscape into rural policies
taking into account the cultural identity . At the global level the
development of agreement between the Research Group 9.03.00 and the Food
and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to expand the FAO
project on rural heritage systems to include forest and woodlands, as well
as the work of UNESCO on biocultural and immaterial heritage, present new
research fields and challenges that need to be explored. For forestry and
foresters this will require approaches for integrating natural and cultural
values in a new paradigm that bridges the gap between nature and society,
both in research and in development policies, and improving the uneasy
relationship between, traditional knowledge and formal forest science. This
new perspective seems particularly needed especially in view of the 20th
anniversary of the Rio Declaration on environment and development and the
need for a revised post-2012 strategy for meeting global environmental and
sustainable development goals that pays greater attention to cultural
values.
Topics to be considered for the meeting: traditional knowledge, planning and
management, history, rural and forest policy, biodiversity, socieconomic
development, monitoring..
Submission of Abstracts: An abstract of approximately 500 words may be
submitted to the session organizing committee c/o Dott. Valentina Marinai,
landscape(a)unifi.it. Please include the full name of authors, their
affiliations and e-mail address. The extended deadline for abstract
submission is February 25th.
The papers presented at the conference will be considered for publication
in the international journal “Global Environment”, while the new book
series on environmental history by Springer Verlag may publish the
proceedings of the meeting.

IUFRO and Information: Direction 2012
Information has been central to IUFRO's brief since its foundation in the nineteenth century, and it has maintained a specialist research group dealing with information in various forms for well over a century. Following the latest re-organisation, this role is now held by the new IUFRO group 9.01, Information and Communication, which brings together the traditional library, information networks and terminology activities (formerly 6.03) with communications, public relations, extension and knowledge exchange, along with the long-existing Latin American and Caribbean information systems network.
The All-Division 9 conference in Sarajevo, May 9-11 2012, gives us a great opportunity to explore these newly-unified territories and discover synergies within them that will benefit both IUFRO's internal information exchange and the global forest information network. Each subgroup of 9.01 will offer an individual programme, and this is a call for contributions for the session to be organised by 9.01.01, Library, Information Networks and Terminology, entitled IUFRO and Information: Direction 2012. Objectives for the session are:
1) To involve the widest possible cross-section of those with an interest in forest-related information
2) To explore opportunities for cross-sectoral work between the various sub-sections of 9.01 and across IUFRO generally, to support and enhance information provision is its widest sense
3) To derive from this a timely and relevant agenda for 9.01.01 to take us up to the next World Congress in 2014 and beyond.
So we invite your ideas! In which directions should we be heading in 2012? What are your priorities in managing information today? What solutions have you found, and what support do you need to help establish new systems and services - or to reinforce existing systems much valued but now under threat, perhaps for economic or staffing reasons?
We welcome proposals for conventional papers (15min maximum), and also short contributions (maximum 5 mins) which can be presented in café-style discussion sessions. We recognise that funding to attend conferences is often difficult to come by these days, particularly in the library and information sector, and many who would be interested may be unable to attend. We welcome contributions from you too! and strongly encourage you to send in short pieces which can be discussed by conference participants. This can be in any form you like, e.g. PowerPoint, video (e.g. YouTube), social media (Twitter etc), e-mail etc. We are not looking for sophisticated or time-consuming presentation, but for ideas : suggestions for activities where we as a group of information professionals can make a difference to you, whether you are an information provider or user, or both.
Traditionally, our group has been active in the areas of networking, classification and terminology, and in supporting the Global Forest Information Service (GFIS); and more recently in the developing areas of data management/archiving, mentoring, training & support and evidence-based forestry. Ideas for further development in those areas are welcome, but do not limit yourselves to them:
information is key to every area of human activity so nothing is barred!
