With these short, peer-reviewed, and fully citable commentary articles we aim to substantially intensify academic debate. They enable science-based, concise and quick responses by authors to recent developments in the field and guarantee a timely reply by the editors.
We want to encourage you to submit such commentary manuscripts from now onwards. In addition, please feel free to spread the word in your networks.

Revised Aims & Scope:
Forest Policy and Economics is a leading scientific journal that publishes peer-reviewed policy and economics research relating to forests, forested landscapes, forest-related industries, and other forest-relevant land uses. It also welcomes contributions from other social sciences and humanities perspectives that make clear theoretical, conceptual and methodological contributions to the existing state-of-the-art literature on forests and related land use systems. These disciplines include, but are not limited to, sociology, anthropology, human geography, history, jurisprudence, planning, development studies, and psychology research on forests. Forest Policy and Economics is global in scope and publishes multiple article types of high scientific standard. Acceptance for publication is subject to a double-blind peer-review process.
The journal publishes the following, peer-reviewed, citable article types:
* Research articles are full-length original scientific publications based on clearly defined methods and adequate data
* Review articles provide a systematic, analytical overview of a specific field of scientific literature based on the analysis of existing international publications
* Special Issues consist of a collection of articles resulting from previous scientific exchange among a group of writers. Contributions to Special Issues are invited by the Guest Editor(s). Potential Guest Editors are invited to submit brief proposals for Special Issues, including envisaged contributions, to any of our Editors at any time.
* Commentaries are science-based, peer-reviewed, short communications (approx. 1000-3000 words) formulated as one of the following types:
* Science Critiques: Critically discuss previous research published in our journal or in other high-impact outlets with direct relevance to our aims and scope. Critiques ideally address other authors' theories, hypotheses, methodologies, or conclusions, or a mix thereof, in a critical and straightforward yet constructive manner. Authors embed their line of reasoning into current scientific literature; critiques are not based on opinion. Through Science Critiques, authors quickly advance scholarly debate.
* Research Trends: These articles identify emerging empirical phenomena and issues of importance that should be addressed by future research. Ideally, such contributions propose research agendas, raise analytical research questions, and propose methods for the future study of the phenomenon. The commentaries should be embedded in existing scientific knowledge and related literature.
* Policy Forum: These are short commentary pieces on contemporary, internationally relevant forest or forest-related policy issues that enable researchers, policy makers, and practitioners to make timely contributions to policy debates. Contributions are based on research, expert analysis, literature review, or practitioner reflections regarding concrete policy issues. Pure opinion pieces will not be considered. Forum articles should be written in an accessible style and supported by real world examples and/or referenced scientific evidence.

Greetings!
The Society of American Foresters is excited to begin accepting applications for the 2017 Gregory Award. The Gregory Award seeks to mark the achievements of Bob and Ann Gregory and further their interest in international relations by providing economic assistance to outstanding students or professionals from outside of the US and Canada to attend the SAF Convention and have meaningful engagement with foresters on the North American continent.
Thanks to the continued generosity of the Gregory family and SAF members, this award has been expanded to bring two promising individuals to the SAF Convention each year. This year’s convention will take place in Albuquerque, New Mexico on November 15-19. The award includes complimentary registration and $2,000 (US dollars) that may be utilized for travel, lodging, and tickets to SAF convention events or technical field tours. SAF will work with successful applicants to allocate the funds in the most useful manner.

by Division 9 back to back with the IUFRO congress 2017 in Freiburg

Colleagues,
We hope to compile information on orphaned data for tropical forests, including inventory and plot data, that are in danger of being lost. Many projects over the years have generated a lot of tropical forest data. But the information is scattered among different institutions and people, some still only on paper, some digitized but in older formats.
TROPIS and ATROFI-UK are two previous databases that compiled metadata on forest plots and inventories. The data for certain plots are available at www.forestplots.net and its associated networks. But other plots and inventories still need attention, re-discovery even. We would like to compile information on datasets that should be digitized or transformed to an up-to-date digital format. The goal is firstly to make metadata on these datasets available on a publicly accessible website, and then to try to secure the data itself by pushing for appropriate curation with open-access availability.
These legacy datasets are invaluable for understanding how tropical forests change through time, including the cumulative impacts of changes in land use and climate, and changes in patterns of biodiversity and carbon storage. The past can help inform the future.

Experiences with Adaptive Measures in Forestry and Forest Restoration under Global Change
The members of the IUFRO Task Force "Forest Adaptation and Restoration under Global Change" are conducting a survey to gain data and insights for developing best practice approaches for forest adaptation and restoration under global change. This survey relies on the knowledge of experts/professionals from forestry and related fields and their information about actual examples of Adaptive Measures in Forestry and Forest Restoration, thus we would like to kindly ask you for your participation.
The collected data will contribute valuable information to a study of the local and regional experiences with Adaptive Forest Management (AFM) and Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) under climate- and societal change with the aim to increase the adaptive capacity of forests and forest landscapes with regards to those changes.
