Dear Colleagues,
I am please to invite you to this side event organized by Cirad, FAO and
Cifor on concession in tropical forests. The main objectove of this side
event is to discuss and to evaluate the future prospects of
concession-based forestry, firstly based on an analysis of specific
challenges the forest concession forestry now faces in the three major
tropical forest regions (Amazon Basin, Congo Basin and South East Asia)
and, secondly by comparing the design and implementation of forest
concessions in the three regions where tropical forests occur (Central
Africa, Tropical America and South east Asia). I hope that the
colleagues from division 1 attending the congress will participate to
this side event on Monday night 19h45-21h00...
best regards

Effects of Ungulate Browsing on Forest Regeneration and Silviculture
Birmensdorf (Zürich), Switzerland / 14 - 16 October 2015
http://www.wsl.ch/iufro-ungfor2015/
Dear Division 1 Scientists and Colleagues,
Ungulate browsing is one of the many factors that affect tree establishment, growth and mortality and thus both structure and species composition of forests. Tree saplings are part of the usual food of ungulate species and palatable tree species, like Abies alba (European silver fir), are often browsed by ungulates. At the same time, natural regeneration of a mixture of species is valued in mountain protection forests to mitigate damages of snow avalanches, rockfall, mass flow and wind storms. Thereby, species with deep rooting systems (like Abies alba and Acer pseudoplatanus) are particularly important.
Measuring and monitoring the effects of ungulates on forest regeneration pose however major challenges because leader shoot browsing rate linearly correlates neither with tree density nor with species composition. The conference intends to present the current state of knowledge on ungulate impacts on tree regeneration and their implications for forest stand dynamics. We specifically focus on sustainable natural tree regeneration under current and predicted future climate.
If you are working in this area and have not yet registered for the symposium, here is your chance to do so: visit http://www.wsl.ch/iufro-ungfor2015/registration/ and book your place!
We are looking forward to welcoming you to WSL Birmensdorf!

Subject: Cost Action FP1202 on Marginal Populations FGR. Call for a Training School on " Altitude Marginal populations, " Forest genetic resources of marginal populations of forest trees", 30.08.2015-4.09.2015, Pieve Tesino (Trento, Italy).
Cost Action FP1202 MaP FGR “Strengthening conservation: a key issue for adaptation of marginal/peripheral populations of forest trees to climate change in Europe (MaP-FGR)”, is organizing a 2015 Training School. This Training School is especially focused on forest genetic resources of marginal and peripheral populations of forest trees at high elevation edge and on how they are evolving and adapting to the effects of current isotherm shift.
Lectures will focus on case studies on forest species at high elevation edge, presenting methodology and results obtained by researchers working in research institutions participating in the Cost Action FP1202 MaP-FGR and invited experts.
The training school aims to provide intensive training on the adaptation and evolution of MaP populations of forest trees at high elevation edge of species distribution, at widening the knowledge of the Action activities and sharing expertise between trainers and trainees.
Only candidate Trainees from COST countries and NCC Countries, or related to Cost non European Countries can apply.

Betreff: International Workshop on Forest Science Publishing (IUFRO WP 9.01.06)
International Workshop on Forest Science Publishing
IUFRO WP 9.01.06
Helsinki, Finland, 14 - 16 October 2015
Dear Colleague,
The International Workshop on Forest Science Publishing will be the first activity of the new Working Party 9.01.06 of IUFRO. The initiative to establish the Working Party was made in the IUFRO World Congress in Salt Lake City, USA, in October 2014. The aim of the working party is to provide a forum for discussions, training, exchange of ideas, and development of editorial practices of journals dealing with forests, wood science, and related research. The Working Party and its first meeting are expected to be of special interest to the editors, editorial board members, and reviewers of peer-reviewed forest science journals for discussing timely issues on scientific publishing.
Based on feedback from Working Party members, the first workshop will emphasise peer-review and open access/open data issues yet contributions on any issue relevant to forest science publishing are welcome. The workshop will be composed of keynote talks, voluntary oral and poster presentations, and working groups. The working groups will formulate the activities of the Working Party until the next IUFRO World Congress in 2019.
The workshop website is www.metla.fi/fsp2015/index.htm and we invite you to submit abstracts and register through the website. The abstract submission will be open through 15 August 2015. Registration at the lower fee 380 € will be open through 9 September 2015. Thereafter the registration fee will increase to late level 460 €. Abstract submission will redirect you to the Open Journal System of the Finnish Society of Forest Science and the Natural Resources Institute Finland.
We ask you to read the Author Guidelines before submitting an abstract. Selected presentations will be published as full articles in a special issue of Silva Fennica (www.silvafennica.fi <http://www.silvafennica.fi/> ).
We hope that you find all the relevant information on the workshop in these websites. If you have additional questions, please do not hesitate to contact chair of the organising committee, Pekka Nygren (contact details below).
On behalf of the Organising Committee of the Workshop and the Workshop host, The Finnish Society of Forest Science, I wish you welcome to Helsinki next October!

Colleagues! Scientists!
Forest research projects are often carried out without the public knowing much about them. If you think that your research project deserves more attention than that, here is your chance: showcase your research work in the blog competition of the XXIV World Forestry Congress!
By submitting a blogpost you can help to significantly boost awareness, engagement and investments in forestry in general and on one of the six Congress sub-themes in particular:
* Forests for socioeconomic development and food security
* Building resilience with forests
* Integrating forests and other land uses
* Encouraging product innovation and sustainable trade
* Monitoring forests for better decision-making
* Improving governance by building capacity
The blog competition closes on July 31 midnight CET.
Details of the blog competition are at: <https://forests2015.wordpress.com/2015/05/08/announcing-forests2015-blog-co…> https://forests2015.wordpress.com/2015/05/08/announcing-forests2015-blog-co…

Betreff: IUFRO 3.08 conference on small-scale and community forestry - 2nd call for papers
Dear Colleagues
It is my great pleasure to make the Second Announcement and Call for Papers for the next IUFRO 3.08 Small-scale Forestry conference. The theme of the conference is Small-scale and Community Forestry and the Changing Nature of Forest Landscapes to be held on the Sunshine Coast, Australia from 11 to 15 October, 2015. Further details about the conference can be found at http://www.smallscaleforestry.org
The second call for papers has opened will close on 3 June, 2015, with notification of acceptance of papers by 12 June. Details about the call, topics of interest and the process for submitting abstracts can be found on the conference website. We received 117 abstracts as part of the first call, with just over 70 papers being accepted for oral presentation and the remaining papers accepted as poster presentations. Unfortunately this means we only have limited space for additional oral presentations. It is unlikely that any further abstracts for oral presentation will be accepted after the second call closes on 5 June.
We have also been fortunate to receive funding from the IUFRO Special Program for Development of Capacities (SPDC) Scientist Assistance Program to support three scientists from developing countries to attend. Further details can be found on the conference website.
Registration for conference will open on Monday 17 May, with an early bird rate available until 30 June. Registration will be via the conference website. Further details will also be posted shortly about the 3 day post conference tour to the World Heritage Listed Fraser Island.
Looking forward to seeing you in sunny Queensland!
Kind regards
