The 18th international conference of the International Boreal Forest Research Association (IBFRA) is being hosted by the USDA Forest Service and the University of Maine in Bangor, Maine, USA. Invited keynote speakers, scientific sessions (oral and poster) and panel discussions will explore new scientific findings and their linkages with policy relating to the addressing change in boreal forests. Designed to engage and inform scientists, resource managers and policy makers, the conference themes will address the current and emerging challenges for the boreal, the role of science in addressing those challenges and the links between science, policy and practice.
Topics will include advances in research and policy relating to important regional and global issues around balancing resource use in the boreal with habitat and biodiversity objectives, strategies for mitigation of and adaptation to risks relating to a changing climate and changes in disturbance regimes, and socio-economic changes and impacts. Emphasis will be placed on the use of science to inform management practices and public policy in the boreal.
The abstract submission site will open on October 1, 2016, and authors will have until January 22, 2017 to submit papers. Sessions may be proposed to Dr. Christopher Woodall at abstracts(a)2017ibfra.org by January 1, 2017. Any questions may be directed to info(a)2017ibfra.org.

Dear Colleagues,
It is our great pleasure to announce that the Joint International Congress entitled “SUSTAINABLE RESTORATION OF MEDITERRANEAN FORESTS - Analysis and perspective within the context of bio-based economy development under global changes” will be held in Palermo (Italy), 19 – 21 April 2017.
It is known worldwide that conservation and sustainable management of forests plays a pivotal role in the green economy of present and future generations. It is for this reason that the achievement of an improved knowledge of how to adapt forest and forests landscapes to the challenges posed by climate and social changes must become the first goal for all researchers and stakeholder active in this important sector of any national economies.
Because of Palermo latitudinal position in Sicily, the period of the year chosen for holding the congress is normally the best period of the year in terms of climate and vegetation life-time. Therefore we are sure that there will be outstanding social events, good opportunities to establish new collaborations among participants, and relaxed discussion in addition to a fabulous post-congress excursion.
On behalf of the Organizing Committee, we kindly invite you to Palermo International Congress in April 2017, ITALY.

Dear IUFRO Silvicuture Division 1:
I work in European project called EMPHASIS <http://www.emphasisproject.eu/>
on integrated pest management in both the forestry and farming sectors. I
hope you can help me with the following given the scope of the Division.
We need to distribute two surveys prepared in order to understand what the
main plant health issues are AND how stakeholders deal with them. We are
focused in Europe, but feedback at a global level is very welcome.
- One of the surveys is addressed to all end-users of pest management
measures (farm and forest managers, nurseries, public green spaces
managers...). Both professional and on “a hobby” basis. Available in 9
languages (English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Romanian, Polish,
Latvian and Hungarian). Link: https://goo.gl/forms/Vmfwq6RXzx
- The other survey is addressed to all stakeholders involve in pest
management, from policy makers to scientist (like yourself), and including
everything in between. Available in 5 languages (English, German, Spanish,
French and Italian). Link: https://goo.gl/8HEGPr
Any help will be very much welcome in distributing this polls. Feel free to
include the links in any newsletter/mailing list/message you feel might be
useful for distribution.
If you have any questions regarding the surveys or the project, feel free
to contact me at emphasisproject(a)gmail.com and I will be happy to help.
Thanks,
Isabel Mendoza Poudereux
PD: sorry in advance if you get these surveys through more than one channel
or mailing list

A special issue for the journal *International Journal of Biodiversity
Science, Ecosystem Services & Management* was published on “Synergies
between Biodiversity and Timber Management” in April 2016. This Special
Issue is based on a technical session at the IUFRO 2014 World Congress. Papers
examine potential positive interactions between biodiversity and managing
for timber production, especially of high-value species. These management
goals can be in conflict. But the increasing demands for high-quality
timber as well as for biodiversity conservation require that we consider
these aims together. Papers range geographically from tropical to temperate
forests. The overview of the special issue can be found at:
