*Modelling species population dynamics with nature conservation laws*
The PhD position takes place within the project Can laws save the
natural world? funded by the Swedish Research Council VR, which aims to
quantitatively understand how endangered species can benefit from nature
conservation laws. The project presents a high level of novelty and will
provide important implications for conservation. This position, along
with a parallel PhD position in environmental law, is one of the key
components of the project. Specifically, we are looking for a highly
motivated graduate student who will 1) develop quantitative population
models of endangered species to align concepts defined in European
species conservation law with measurable ecological counterparts that
are applicable across many taxa, 2) develop quantitative analyses to
document the effects of legal protection on species trends and 3)
analyze patterns of biodiversity-related legal aspects across European
countries (such as e.g. court cases). The research will involve
different taxa but has a clear emphasis on large carnivores, such as
wolves, bears and lynx. The PhD position aims to be interdisciplinary,
being both intensive in quantitative modelling and requiring an ability
to understand legal concepts and their use by stakeholders.
/Qualifications/
Required: a master degree (or equivalent) with a specialization in
quantitative ecology, ecological modelling, biodiversity conservation or
evolutionary ecology, a demonstrated ability to write one’s own analyses
in R and a professional level fluency in English (see also below).
Desirable: a demonstrated experience of using additional computer
programming languages for scientific analysis, an interest in endangered
species conservation, experience in scholarly publishing and knowledge
of European nature conservation laws and policies. Also relevant:
ability and experience to inform and communicate with diverse
stakeholders such as authorities, governments or the European
Commission. Interpersonal skills will form an important part of the
candidate selection.

If you are attending the conference notice that there will be a session
organized by Sandra Luque, Jiquan Chen and me, on Thursday, 21st of
July, from 14h30 to 18h00 on "The role of landscape sustainability
science on the post-2020 global biodiversity framework".
Hope to see you there.
Best regards,

*Letter by the IUFRO President and Executive Director *
We are deeply shocked and horrified by the ongoing Russian military
assault on the independent sovereign democratic nation of Ukraine, the
grave humanitarian crisis that it is creating, and the disastrous
impacts it will have on the scientific community. We stand with the
international community in condemning this invasion, and with our forest
science colleagues in Ukraine and elsewhere, including in Russia, who
have courageously raised their voices against this war and its
associated violation of human rights.
IUFRO is a global, non-profit, non-governmental and non-discriminatory
network that unites member organizations in more than 120 countries
representing over 15,000 scientists. Throughout our 130-year history we
have provided a vital platform for international science collaboration
in line with the principle of free and responsible practice of science.
While remaining true to our fundamentally non-political identity, we
cannot overlook the blatant disregard of international rule of law on
display by the government of the Russian Federation and its disastrous
impacts on the forest science community in Ukraine. For this reason,
IUFRO has already cancelled the annual Board Meeting and Regional
Conference that were to be held this September in Russia. Moreover, we
are suspending our formal contacts with Russian State institutions.
The current situation challenges but does not alter IUFRO’s unshakable
commitment to fostering international scientific dialogue and
collaboration for the benefit of forests and people worldwide, and to
supporting our member organizations and scientists, especially those
affected by conflicts and war anywhere in the world. We are determined
to support IUFRO member organizations and scientists in Ukraine along
with other academic and research institutions worldwide that are
offering opportunities for Ukrainian students and scientists at this
critical time.

Dear all,
hope you had a good Christmas break and wish you a Happy New Year.
The IUFRO LE WP officers in our group are usually elected in physical
meetings but we didn't have one since 2019 and should not have another
one soon so we need to solve it with the means that we have available.
The WP officers and the regional structure of the IUFRO LE WP decided
that we should conduct the election for the coming 2 year term by email
with the support of the IUFRO listserv according to a simple process as
follows:
1-*Presentation of candidature proposals*: candidature proposals should
be sent to the current officers _until __February 13 _by email with
indication of names and affiliations of candidates and a short
description of goals and proposals for the WP in the coming two years,
2-*Presentation of candidatures to WP members*: information included in
the candidature proposals will be sent by email to all members
registered in the IUFRO WP listserv _between February 13 and March 6_,
3-*Voting*: it will be done by email; emails with the decision of
members will be sent to the 4 WP officers simultaneously _during the
week of March 7 to 13_.
Best regards,
João Azevedo
