Objet : hiring a PhD student or postdoc in disturbance ecology
*PhD student or Postdoctoral Researcher to study climate change and
disturbances*
We have an excellent opportunity for a PhD student or postdoctoral researcher to estimate the ability of arctic and boreal ecosystems to keep pace with climate change, given rising temperatures, thawing permafrost and multiple, interacting disturbances in Siberian Russia ( https://www.melissalucash.com/projects/siberia) Our project is funded by the National Science Foundation ( https://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward?AWD_ID=1844435)
The position will be located at Portland State University in Portland, OR, but the position will require periodic travel to the US Forest Service Institute for Applied Ecosystems in Wisconsin. The selected candidate will also travel with the PIs to meet with collaborators at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Austria.
The successful candidate would join our well-renowned research group led by Drs. Melissa Lucash, Eric Gustafson, Forest Hoffman, Brian Sturtevant, Joshua Fu, Dmitry Schepaschenko, and Anatoly Shvidenko. This international and interdisciplinary team is comprised of landscape ecologists, forest ecologists, and spatial modelers at Portland State University, the U.S.
Forest Service, Oak Ridge National Lab, University of Tennessee -Knoxville and IIASA in Laxenburg, Austria.
Capitalizing on a rich and underutilized empirical dataset of Siberia, the successful candidate will project future species composition and C dynamics under climate change using a landscape-scale forest simulation model (LANDIS-II). The candidate will also collaborate with a postdoc at the University of Tennessee and Oak Ridge National Lab who will use CLM-FATES to estimate changes in plant functional groups, C dynamics and vegetation-climate feedbacks.
Required qualifications:
· M.S. or Ph.D. in Biogeochemistry, Forestry, Geography or
associated fields
· excellent programming skills in R and/or ArcMap
· excellent writing skills
· experience in data mining of ecological, environmental or climatic
databases.
Modeling experience is not essential for this position. We expect to help the candidate become familiar with LANDIS-II.
Compensation for the PhD student will be $26,000 (plus tuition) and $50,000 for the postdoctoral scholar. The position is funded for two years for a postdoc and three years for a PhD student and will begin as early as April 1, 2020, but the start date can be negotiated.
If applying as a postdoc, please apply here:
https://jobs.hrc.pdx.edu/postings/31666
If applying as a PhD student, please submit a cover letter, CV, and list of three references to Dr. Lucash by email (lucash(a)pdx.edu) with the subject line “PhD student application- Siberia”. Letters may be requested if candidates advance to the final stage of the application process.
