I have exciting news for our IUFRO DIVISION 8 - the IUFRO Board approved all changes in structure and officers. Then we do have the great pleasure to welcome a NEW UNIT 8.04.00 – Air pollution and Climate Change (please see detailed list of officers attach.) – A big thanks to Elena, Alessandra and all the IUFRO colleagues that worked in this strategic change – welcome to all!
The Board has also approved the new Deputy coordinators positions, I welcome Elena Paoletti and Anna Barbati; together with Alexia Stokes and myself will be leading the Division for the next 5 years period. Then I am very proud to let you know that we are making history in IUFRO since this is the first Division ever in the long history of IUFRO to have only women coordinators.
Note several changes are taking place for WP officers – I will send a detailed file with these changes in positions and newcomers after the WC in Curitiba, I know that some changes will still happen while discussions will take place during the WC

During the congress we will host a Side Event titled Adapting Europes
forests to global challenges: Lessons from ALTERFOR, on October 1st from
12:00-13:50 at Venue R8 wing 2. ALTERFOR is a large Horizon 2020 project

exploring the following overarching question: What alternative forest

*This outreach notice is an early alert* to inform potential applicants that the Department of Geography at Portland State University will soon be advertising for a *2+ year post-doctoral researcher funded by the National Science Foundation. *
The successful candidate will be a member of an international interdisciplinary team of landscape ecologists, forest ecologists, and spatial modelers at Portland State University, the U.S. Forest Service, Oak Ridge National Lab, and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis in Laxenburg, Austria. The candidate will estimate the ability of arctic and boreal ecosystems to keep pace with climate change and to quantify temporal and spatial variation in biome shifts and C stocks across a large latitudinal gradient in Siberian Russia ( https://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward?AWD_ID=1844435) Capitalizing on a rich and underutilized empirical dataset of Siberia, we will project future species composition and C dynamics under climate change using a landscape-scale forest simulation model (LANDIS-II) and compare our results to similar output from a global scale DGVM (CLM-FATES). The results will be used to improve how DGVMs account for landscape-scale processes such as dispersal, disturbance and species-level interactions, which will ultimately impact the land cover inputs used by Global Circulation Models to project future global climate. The successful candidate will have primary responsibility for the LANDIS-II modeling portion of the project.
Major duties and tasks of the position:
· Develop and validate initial conditions for the study area
· Improve capabilities to model non-tree species (e.g., shrubs,
sphagnum, grass).
· Verify and validate permafrost behavior and hydrological impacts
in the model.
· Calibrate disturbances for each study area.
· Assist in developing and testing a new LANDIS-II output extension
to estimate land surface albedo.
· Conduct simulation experiments and analyze spatial and tabular
outputs using GIS, R and other analytical tools to test hypotheses.
· Collaborate with project personnel to publish and disseminate
results.
The position will be located at the US Forest Service Institute for Applied Ecosystems in Rhinelander, WI for approximately the first 14 months of the appointment, and then at Portland State University in Portland, OR for an additional 12 months. Compensation includes an annual salary of $54,000 with health benefits provided by Portland State. *The position will be officially advertised in mid-October and will begin on Jan 15, 2020*, although it could begin as late as March 1, 2020.

Dear IUFRO Landscape Ecology WP members,
In October, during the IUFRO World Congress in Curitiba, the IUFRO
Landscape Ecology Working Party will elect Officers for the coming two
years. Working Party Officers are responsible for managing and
coordination the working party, nominating regional and thematic
coordinators, and articulating the activity of the WP with IUFRO and
other institutions, among other responsibilities.
We hereby declare our intention of running to Working Party Officers in
the coming election. Our motivation is mainly to maintain the dynamics
of this extraordinary network of landscape ecologists and other
scientists and practitioners which has had an enormous impact in science
and in professional activities that somehow involve landscapes and trees.
With this candidature we specifically aim to:
- Maintain the interaction among members of the WP, either landscape
ecologists, forest scientists and practitioners in these and related
fields and their organizations to promote knowledge and experience
exchange and sustainable management of landscapes and forests,
- Preserve the geographic structure of the WP including coordinators
and representatives from all regions and continents in the world,
- Improve institutional cooperation with other organizations in fields
related to landscapes and forests, namely through the work of thematic
coordinators for IUFRO-IALE and for urban forestry,
- Maintain the regular organization of international conferences across
the world on relevant topics for the landscape ecology and forest
communities,
- Maintain the regular publication of books, special issues and
individual papers resulting from the events organized by the WP and from
other initiatives of the WP members, and
- Increase the involvement of young researchers in the structure of the WP.
This candidature involves João Azevedo, as chair, and Peilei Fan and
Jose Alberto Gobbi, as deputies of the Working Group, as well as the
