EM/2018/31
Call for nomination of fellows for the development of scenarios on nature and its contributions to people, by 15 January 2019
Dear IPBES members, observers and other interested stakeholders,
I have the pleasure to invite nominations from Governments, relevant institutions and organizations for early career fellows, in the context of the IPBES Fellowship Programme, to support the IPBES expert group dedicated to scenarios and models of biodiversity and ecosystem services.
The IPBES Fellowship Programme is part of a larger capacity-building portfolio of activities, and targets early career experts who wish to gain experience by participating in the work of IPBES (please see <https://ipbes.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=5da0fed71c7e4399fb28ab549&i…> here for more information on IPBES capacity-building activities).
The work would build on the IPBES methodological assessment of scenarios and models of biodiversity and ecosystem services approved by the IPBES Plenary in 2016 (please see <https://ipbes.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=5da0fed71c7e4399fb28ab549&i…> here), and aims to catalyse further development of scenarios and models by the broader scientific community for future IPBES work (decision IPBES-5/1).
The IPBES expert group on scenarios and models for biodiversity and ecosystem services has held several consultations over the course of 2017-18 to develop a new set of positive scenarios on the future of nature and its contributions to people. This process brings together a wide range of stakeholders at multiple scales, including representatives of the scientific community, international institutions, governments, the private sector, indigenous peoples and local communities, and non-governmental organisations. These stakeholders are invited to discuss alternative visions for the future of nature and its contributions to people, as well as possible pathways for these visions. The expert group will analyse these inputs in an iterative manner and at multiple scales, using a wide array of knowledge and evidence, from quantitative modelling to indigenous and local knowledge.
The selected fellows will support the expert group on scenarios and models in this consultative process and in producing reports and scientific papers. Fellows will be given the opportunity to attend workshops, starting with the stakeholder consultation workshop scheduled in April 2019, and, depending on the capacity building programme for 2019, may receive training on the IPBES assessment processes. This fellowship will initially be until the end of 2019, with the possibility of an extension subject to the outcomes of the seventh session of the IPBES Plenary (#IPBES7).
For an effective implementation of these deliverables, it is critical to include fellows from various natural and social scientific disciplines and from different knowledge systems, including indigenous and local knowledge systems, as well as policy and technical experts and practitioners. Nominations from a broad range of organizations/institutions are thus encouraged.
More information on the nomination process is included in the annex below.
Interested candidates (nominees) are requested to fill out their application form no later than 15 January 2019. Nominators (Governments/organisations/institutions) should submit nominations by 22 January 2019 at the latest. Earlier nominations are strongly encouraged.
I thank you in advance for your nominations and your continued support to IPBES.
Yours sincerely,

SESSION SUMMARY: Tropical timber species of the Meliaceae (including Cedrela, Entandrophragma, Khaya, Swietenia, and Toona) are among the world’s finest woods, and many species have other uses. Their sustainable management faces similar issues around the world. This session will share the latest in research and applications for a global perspective on these species. Topics could cover conservation of genetic resources, genetic improvement, advances in shoot borer control, natural forest management, and development and products useful for human health, among others.
SESSION C1c: Improving high-value Meliaceae yields in plantations
ISTF CONTACT: Antonio Ferraz, Universidade Federal do Piauí, Brazil ( <mailto:acferrazfilho@gmail.com> acferrazfilho(a)gmail.com)
SESSION SUMMARY: This session will focus on better production of Meliaceae species grown in plantations. Many species (e.g. mahogany, African mahogany, Australian red cedar, Melia) have recently been grown as plantations around the world and research is needed over a wide range of topics. The main objectives are to share experiences and to find common research themes to build possible collaborations among researchers working with Meliaceae species in plantations around the world.
SESSION C9a: Discovery, curation, and uses of legacy tropical forest data sets
ISTF CONTACT: Sheila Ward, Mahogany for the Future, Inc., Puerto Rico (tropfordata(a)gmail.com <mailto:tropfordata@gmail.com> )
SESSION SUMMARY: Legacy tropical forest datasets have been generated by various projects over time, and many are in danger of being lost. These datasets are valuable for understanding how tropical forests change through time, and many of the forests they characterize no longer exist. To safeguard these data, standardized metadata and electronic archiving schemes need to be developed. The purpose of the session is to share information on the potential uses of such datasets, their current status, and appropriate curation and metadata strategies.
SESSION F6b: Effective educational strategies for the next generation of forest professionals
ISTF CONTACT: Ruth Metzel, Azuero Earth Project, Panama, ( <mailto:ruth@proecoazuero.org> ruth(a)proecoazuero.org)
SESSION SUMMARY: University-based programs on forest related fields are evolving and inherently need to change towards multidisciplinary programs. Some major drivers of these changes are globalization of the economy, climate change, and new technologies and informatics. In a similar vein, solutions for real life, resource management problems around forest key issues, like health, bioenergy, climate change are consistently calling for more holistic and cross-sectoral approaches. Universities curricula need to meet diverse higher demands, and new ways to approach these challenges involving various disciplines in a multicultural environment. This session will highlight findings on research aiming to understand those challenges and also research that addresses innovative strategies that allow forestry students and professors and providers of non-formal education to keep abreast with the time, such online classes, field practices, case studies among others.
With its focus on being a communication network, ISTF can help you connect with others interested in tropical forests and forestry. To join, please visit this link please fill out the membership form at <https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdy9FqCZ5Yj3TTA-mDJkgwm8n1jbCkEGlF…> GoogleForms or send a message to <mailto:tropicalforesters@gmail.com> tropicalforesters(a)gmail.com.
