Circular letter by the IUFRO President
Dear IUFRO members,
Dear IUFRO officeholders,
I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation for your
support and commitment to IUFRO during this past year. Thanks to our
individual and collective efforts, not to mention the dedication and
leadership provided by the IUFRO Headquarters team in Vienna, we have much
to show for our work in 2022.
The IUFRO network continues to provide a stable and resilient platform for
global collaboration in forest science and its application to a number of
the environmental, economic, and social challenges we face. Our activities
this past year have included a diversity of meetings, workshops, training
activities and other networking events, as well as the production of
numerous influential publications. Among the many excellent events
organized this past year, of particular note was the All-IUFRO Conference
<https://www.iufro.org/events/all-iufro-conference-2022/>: *Forests in a
Volatile World – Global Collaboration to Sustain Forests and Their Societal
Benefits*. This event brought together more than 160 participants on site
(in Vienna) and 580 participants online, all together representing 85
countries.
It has been a year of transition for networking activities within IUFRO
with respect to the balance of in-person and online engagement. Following
two years of nearly exclusively virtual events organized by Divisions and
their Research Groups and Working Parties, IUFRO Task Forces, and our
Special Programmes and Projects, the 90 scientific meetings and other
events organized worldwide in 2022 were evenly split between online and
in-person (or hybrid) formats. Over these past three years, we have learned
much in our efforts to adapt our networking and communications strategies
to the limitations imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic. The lessons learned
will enable us to optimize the values of in-person, hybrid and online
networking options, in order to broaden and enhance participation while
lessening our collective carbon footprint associated with physical meetings.
IUFRO’s partnerships <https://www.iufro.org/discover/iufro-partners/> are
thriving - we now has very fruitful collaborative arrangements with about
40 inter-governmental, governmental, private sector and non-governmental
institutions. Several of these partnerships involve important financial
support for IUFRO activities, especially for our Special Programmes and
Projects, for which we are truly grateful.
IUFRO continues to play a significant role on the world stage through our
engagement in a number of policy fora including the UN Forum on Forests,
our leadership of joint initiatives of Collaborative Partnership on Forests
<https://www.fao.org/collaborative-partnership-on-forests/en>
including the Global
Forest Expert Panels <https://www.iufro.org/science/gfep/>, and our
participation in important global forest-related events. For example, at
the XV World Forestry Congress
<https://www.fao.org/event/world-forestry-congress/en> organized by FAO and
the Korea Forest Service in Seoul, IUFRO contributed significantly to the
development of the program, and our work was highly visible throughout the
event.
Looking ahead to 2023, preparations for the upcoming XXVI IUFRO World
Congress <https://iufro2024.com/> in Stockholm – already well underway -
will certainly accelerate. It will be a great Congress, thanks to the
incredible work and enthusiasm of the Congress Organizing Committee, the
Congress Scientific Committee, IUFRO Headquarters, and the hundreds of
IUFRO officeholders who are already involved in the organization of
technical and sub-plenary sessions.
The IUFRO World Congress 2024 in Stockholm provides us with another
opportunity to honour outstanding scientific achievements and contributions
to forestry with a range of IUFRO Awards. I invite you to nominate suitable
candidates for the various categories of awards and thereby enhance the
global visibility of excellent scientists from member organizations in your
respective countries. The call for nominations
<https://www.iufro.org/discover/awards/> can be found on the IUFRO website.
The deadline for submission of nominations will be 15th May 2023.
Once again, I thank you for your many contributions to IUFRO during this
past year and look forward to working with you in the year ahead. As
always, please feel free to share your ideas on how IUFRO can further
improve our collective efforts to interconnect forests, science, and people
for a better world.
I wish you and your families all the very best during this holiday season,
and a happy, healthy, peaceful, and fulfilling New Year ahead.
With warm regards and best wishes,
John Parrotta

IUFRO Press Release: New Report Calls for Better Forest Education to
Safeguard Natural Resources
PDF for download
<https://www.iufro.org/fileadmin/material/media/press-releases/global-assess…>
- *Forest education needs to be improved to be able to fulfil local,
national and global needs*
- *There is an urgent need for locally relevant, appropriate and
inclusive solutions that take into account digital divides, language
barriers and a gender and racial/ethnic balance in forest education*
- *Students at all levels need to have better access to forests and
outdoor training experience*
(*Rome, Italy, 4 October 2022*) Education is essential for safeguarding
natural resources, including forests, for future generations. This is one
of the key messages of a new and comprehensive "Global Assessment of Forest
Education" that examines the status of forest education and identifies much
needed actions. The assessment, which was jointly carried out by the Food
and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International
Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) and the International Union of Forest
Research Organizations (IUFRO), was presented on 4 October 2022 in the
framework of the 26th Session of the FAO Committee on Forestry in Rome,
Italy.
The role of forests and trees in countries' efforts to achieve the United
Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is widely recognized, but
there is a need for well-trained forest sector workers, entrepreneurs,
practitioners, researchers, professionals and policy makers and a
well-informed public to maximize the contribution of forests to the SDGs.
"Forest education may be a tiny sector among educational branches, but it
has the potential to play a much larger role. With a better understanding
and alignment among forest-related stakeholders, it can make a difference
in attaining the SDGs," said Alexander Buck, Executive Director, IUFRO.
However, recent literature highlights concerns, that forest education is
often not meeting the needs of local communities the fast-changing labor
market and the importance of forests and of forest managers and
policymakers is often under-appreciated. "Our hope is that this report will
inform future action to strengthen forest education to the benefit of
forests and trees and contribute to the wellbeing of forest-dependent
peoples, global society and the planet," said Gerardo Segura Warnholtz,
Senior Forestry Officer, FAO.
The study addresses education and training related to forests, trees
outside forests and other wooded land and covers all levels of formal
education: primary, secondary, technical and vocational education and
training, universities and colleges. It identifies an urgent need for
locally relevant, appropriate and inclusive solutions that take into
account digital divides, language barriers and a gender and racial/ethnic
balance in forest education programs and the workforce. One of the main
areas for improvement is to ensure students at all levels better access to
forests and outdoor training experience. "High quality and widely available
forest education that also includes indigenous and traditional
forest-related knowledge is essential for enabling forests and trees to
fulfil many of the societal and environmental functions, a key element
being 'fit-for-purpose' in the forestry sector," says Sheam Satkuru, ITTO
Executive Director.
The report is based on the results of the 2020 Global Forest Education
Survey, supplemented by findings of six regional assessment reports on
forest education, carried out under the project, "Creation of a Global
Forest Education Platform and Launch of a Joint Initiative under the Aegis
of the Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF)", with funding support
from the German Federal Ministry for Food & Agriculture (BMEL).

*Key messages for decision makers about the role of forests in ensuring
sustainable consumption and production patterns (Sustainable Development
Goal SDG 12)*
Our reliance on natural resources has increased by over 65% globally from
2000 to 2019, according to the 2022 progress report on SDG12
<https://sdgs.un.org/goals/goal12> of the United Nations 2030 Agenda. SDG12
strives to promote the efficient use and sustainable management of natural
resources and encourage companies and consumers to adopt sustainable
practices.
The forest sector already contributes significantly to reaching SDG12 and
related SDGs, acknowledging that *trade-offs* between ecology and economy
are required to achieve goals related to climate, biodiversity and land
degradation.
This is the main message of the newly published key messages for policy and
decision makers from a high-level event
<https://www.fao.org/international-day-of-forests/live-event/en/> titled
“Inspire for the future: the role of forests in ensuring sustainable
production and consumption”.
It highlights the vast potential that renewable forest products hold to
contribute to the transition towards carbon-neutral societies and towards
building inclusive, resilient and sustainable economies. It also emphasizes
the need to strengthen local forest-based value chains and to recognize the
importance of cities and communities as engines of innovation that provide
new sustainable solutions to promote resource efficiency. In light of this,
all stakeholders are called upon to help identify and implement innovative
pathways to upscale the contribution of forests to a more sustainable
future.
Representatives from governments, international organizations, industry,
NGOs, research and youth gathered at this high-level event co-organized by
the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the
International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) and the IUFRO
World Congress 2024 | Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) on
the occasion of the International Day of Forests (IDF) on 21 March 2022 at
EXPO Dubai 2020.

A Decade of REDD+: Stakeholder Perceptions of its Implementation
*New Publication!*
To date, evidence indicates that the impacts of REDD+ interventions on
biodiversity, as well as on livelihoods and other economic and social
outcomes, are uneven and often highly context dependent. This is one of the
findings of the report "Forest, Climate, Biodiversity and People: Assessing
a Decade of REDD+"
<https://www.iufro.org/science/gfep/follow-up-studies/biodiversity-forest-ma…>
published by IUFRO's Global Forest Expert Panels (GFEP) Programme earlier
this year.
Back-to-back with the report, GFEP has conducted extensive stakeholder
consultations in Asia and Latin America to identify factors that would need
to be improved for better carbon and non-carbon outcomes of local REDD+
activities. The new publication "A Decade of REDD+: Stakeholder Perceptions
of its Implementation" synthesizes the responses and comments from the
nearly 200 stakeholders who were interviewed on REDD+ implementation on the
ground.
The author Dr. Nelson Grima, GFEP Manager, explains, "We cooperated with
local experts who talked with stakeholders of a wide range of backgrounds,
from Indigenous Peoples to academics and policy makers. Based on
semi-structured interviews, the stakeholders provided their views on the
impacts of REDD+ implementation and potential ways to improve it further.
Interestingly, despite the intrinsic differences between the regions
covered - Asia and Latin America - the factors that need to be improved
according to the interviewees are similar and include social, economic,
environmental, governance, and technical aspects."
Regarding the GFEP report, stakeholders see a huge potential for the use of
this assessment to guide public policies. Nevertheless, they also point out
that this potential is conditioned to the will of national governments to
work towards improving the forest sector and its associated socioeconomic
impacts.
