*IUFRO Podcast: Branching out: What Makes a Forest Healthy?*
What defines a "healthy forest"? According to experts on the latest episode
of IUFRO's "Branching Out" podcast, the answer depends entirely on your
objectives. For a forest managed for timber, any insect or disease that
reduces wood quality is a negative influence. However, in a native forest
managed for biodiversity, these same agents can be beneficial, recycling
nutrients and resetting the ecosystem.
In Episode 7, host Jose Bolaños (IUFRO HQ) and co-host Raghav Sharma from
the International Forestry Students' Association (IFSA) spoke with Tod
Ramsfield (Natural Resources Canada/University of Alberta) and Maartje
Klapwijk (Swedish University of Agricultural Science), Co-Coordinators of
Division 7, Forest Health. They explained that their Division focuses on
the interactions between trees and harmful biotic impacts, which are
broadly divided into forest pathology (diseases, often caused by fungi) and
forest entomology (insects).

The Short Rotation Woody Crops International Conference is a biennial
meeting of the Short Rotation Woody Crops Operations Working Group with the
aim of promoting information exchange and collaborative efforts for short
rotation woody crop (SRWC) operations and research. The 14th biennial Short
Rotation Woody Crops International was hosted by the University of Missouri
Center for Agroforestry from May 13-16, 2024 in Columbia, MO.
A joint meeting of the Short Rotation Woody Crops International Conference
and the Poplar and Willow Council of Canada (PWCC), the 2024 conference
brought together members of leading SRWC and agroforestry organizations,
including the University of Missouri Center for Agroforestry, the
International Commission on Poplars and Other Fast-Growing Trees Sustaining
People and the Environment (IPC) Working Party on Environmental and
Ecosystem Services (WP-ENV), the International Union of Forest Research

With the theme of "*The Future is Green: Integrating Short Rotation Woody
Crops (SRWCs), Agroforestry, and Ecosystem Services for Sustainable,
Productive Landscapes*", the objective of the 2024 conference was to
highlight current SRWC and agroforestry research with the goal of enhancing
information exchange and fostering collaboration for integrating SWRC into
agroforestry systems.
Additionally, unique to this conference, there were multiple
student-focused initiatives throughout, including:
1) the first ever Woody Crops Scholars Program,
2) a student career panel discussion, and
3) a student presentation competition.
These initiatives enhanced student participation and engagement at the
conference. The conference consisted of 2 plenary presentations, 31 oral
presentations and 17 poster presentations from a variety of topic areas
including agroforestry, biomass production, economics, ecosystem services,
genetics, physiology, and phytotechnologies. In addition, Dr. Benjamin
Knapp from the University of Missouri presented a welcome plenary about the
University of Missouri Center for Agroforestry.

*Vienna, 5 June 2025* - A global report on the role of forests in providing
economic and social resilience, has revealed that the rapid pursuit of
economic growth, coupled with a critical misunderstanding of how forests
can preserve resilience, has set a path for undoable destruction.
Researchers have dubbed this "The Humpty Dumpty Effect".
Research shows that forests are being pushed to the brink of collapse,
which could send ripple effects across the globe, destabilising societies
and economies, and just as the nursery rhyme warns, collapsed systems
cannot be 'put back together again'.
Launched today on World Environment Day, this report is the first of its
kind. Leading scientists convened by the International Union of Forest
Research Organizations (IUFRO) to explore, for the first time globally, how
forests contribute to social and economic resilience in the face of
disturbance and change, and how societies can, in turn, support and steward
resilient forest systems. Scientists are calling on policymakers to abandon
business as usual and recognise that forests are not isolated systems but
instead exist as social-ecological systems (SES).
In this vein, the world's forests are not immune to global regime shifts.
As political polarisation grows, climate change is becoming deprioritised,
and markets are shifting in response, and changing the way in which we rely
on, manage, and protect our forests. Scientists warn that by failing to
uphold forest resilience, we are pushing them beyond the point of recovery.
*Dr. Craig Allen, Resilience Scientist and Professor at the School of
Natural Resources at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln said:* "It's not
just the trees that fall - it's a whole web of relationships between
species, soil, water, and people that unravels. Once disrupted, these
relationships can't simply be 'replanted'. We need proactive resilience
building now, rooted in science, justice and long-term thinking."
Indigenous Peoples and local communities have long been championed as the
custodians of our forests, often disproportionately impacted by the onset
of climate change. Whilst this is true, the report highlights that
policymakers underestimate the growing ways in which our world is
interconnected.
*Dr. Nelson Grima, Coordinator of the Science-Policy Programme at IUFRO
said: *"When we destabilise forests, the impacts can be felt across all
regions and economies. Forests are everyone's business - not just those
living nearby. Every person relies on forests to either regulate their
climate, sequester carbon, or to alleviate poverty, ensure food and clean
water or to keep economies stable. It's not about proximity."
IUFRO's report recommends how policymakers can improve and better
understand how forests uphold social and economic resilience in ways that
acknowledge the world's interconnectedness. Economic prosperity cannot be
considered synonymous with improving the resilience of social-ecological
systems, in fact, it's often quite the contrary.
On World Environment Day IUFRO is calling on policymakers and
decision-makers to transform their understanding of the challenges and
solutions our forests face, and to move from reactive, short-term, siloed
decision-making to long-term, proactive, systems-based approaches that
treat forests as part of our social, economic, and environmental fabric.

The year 2024 was a landmark for IUFRO, highlighted by the 26th IUFRO World
Congress held in Stockholm, Sweden. This Congress was IUFRO's first major
global in-person gathering since the pandemic, and the renewed enthusiasm
for face-to-face interaction brought exceptional energy and vitality to
what became the largest Congress in IUFRO's history.
The event also marked the start of a new Board term and Presidency, which
will continue through to the next IUFRO World Congress in 2029. Set to take
place in Nairobi, Kenya, the first time the Congress will be hosted on the
African continent. Among the first initiatives of the new Board was the
introduction of dual Division leadership, aimed at enhancing gender,
regional, and cultural balance across the organization.
The five thematic pillars of the Congress also serve as the organizing
framework for this Annual Report, under which IUFRO's activities throughout
the year are presented. Beyond the Congress and its rich, diverse
scientific program, IUFRO facilitated a total of 62 meetings in 2024 - 37
held virtually and 25 in person, including five hybrid events.
Throughout the year, IUFRO also presented several major publications,
including three volumes in the IUFRO World Series. The IUFRO Podcast series
continued to thrive, with Season 2 shifting its focus from the Congress
(Season 1) to the Divisions.
A Congress year is also a time to celebrate excellence. Numerous IUFRO
awards were presented in recognition of outstanding research and

Are you an *early career forest scientist* with a passion for *global
collaboration*? Or do you know a person who is?
The IUFRO Special Programme for Development of Capacities is offering a
limited number of sponsorships for Scientific Visits (SV) to forest
research institutions overseas during 2025–2026.
This *unique opportunity* is designed to:
- Build lasting research collaborations
- Strengthen scientific skills and capacity
- Support the development of research
- Open doors to publishing opportunities
*Who Can Apply?* Early-career scientists (age 35 or younger) who:
- Have completed an MSc or PhD in forestry or related fields
- Are affiliated with an IUFRO member organization
- Work and reside in an economically disadvantaged country
