Small-scale Forestry and Modern Society

continents gathered in Tartu, Estonia, at the Institute of Forestry and

Improving Access to Sustainable Forest Materials in a Resource-constrained
World

The 55th International Symposium on Forest Mechanization (FORMEC) and 7th
Forest Engineering Conference (FEC) took place on 20-22 September 2023 in
Florence, Italy, and brought together 230 participants from 29 countries to
share state-of-the-art knowledge about harvesting operations, with a focus

Uneven-aged Silviculture: Insights into Forest Adaptation in Times of
Global Change

continents came together in Brno, Czech Republic, to discuss, among other
things, the rapidly changing expectations of society for benefits from

Congratulations! European Forest Institute Celebrated its 30th Anniversary
On 20 September, over 90 participants joined the EFI Secretariat in Novi
Sad, Serbia, to celebrate EFI's 30th anniversary, discuss future plans, and
carry out decision-making. This was the first time that the Annual
Conference had been held in Southeastern Europe. *More

consolidated scientific evidence on the relationship between forests and
human health in the Asian region. It aims to support policymakers and
stakeholders in Asia and beyond, including government officials at all
levels as well as global international organizations, in their ambition to
ensure sustainable development that takes into consideration the health of
humans and nature.

The publication titled "Forests for Human Health in Asia. An Expanded
Policy Brief" is based on the detailed analysis of information contained in
the global assessment report "Forests and Trees for Human Health: Pathways,
Impacts, Challenges and Response Options" (IUFRO World Series Volume 41,
March 2023), which was developed in the framework of the Global Forest
Expert Panels (GFEP) joint initiative of the Collaborative Partnership on
Forests (CPF). Additional research focusing on Asia was carried out to
complement the findings of the global assessment.

The global assessment confirms that forests, trees, and green spaces have
immense potential to contribute to the mental, physical, and social health
and wellbeing of humans at all stages of life, from the prenatal stage to
the elderly. They provide nutritious food and medicines, support climate
change mitigation and adaptation, filter air and water pollutants, and
offer areas for recreation. At the same time, poor practices of
conservation and management of forests can result in adverse effects on
human health with the emergence of zoonotic diseases, forest fires, and
allergic outcomes.
"While forests are an important component of climate change and
biodiversity policies, there is a lack of awareness in Asia and elsewhere
of the complex and vital relationship between forests and human health and
wellbeing. Decision-makers need to include forests and human health
relationships in relevant policies urgently, as the various global and
regional challenges continue to influence both sectors," says *Dr.**Xiaoqi
Feng, *Professor, University of New South Wales, Australia.
"Decision-makers in both forest and health sectors should also adopt more
integrated approaches such as the One Health framework, which recognizes
that the health of humans and the health of animals, plants, and the wider
environment are closely linked and interdependent. Asia can be considered a
cradle of more integrative and close-to-nature healthcare, which provides a
strong foundation for adopting such new frameworks," says *Dr. Payam

Health outcomes of forests and trees differ between urban, rural, and
forest-dependent communities. In the context of Asia, although most forests
are publicly owned (90% in South and Southeast Asia and 88% in Western and
Central Asia, for example), a significant population in the region are
forest-dependent communities. Approximately 481-579 million Indigenous
People and Local Communities (IPLCs) in Asia depend directly on forests for
food, medicine, and livelihoods, all of which affect health and wellbeing.
"Therefore, attention must be paid to ensuring equitable access to
resources and improving local livelihoods through tenure rights, as
increased access to forest resources can have a significant impact on human
health, particularly among forest-dependent communities," says *Dr.
Unnikrishnan Payyappallimana*, Professor, Transdisciplinary University,
India.
Asia has also seen large-scale transitions recently, such as a population
shift from rural to urban areas. The speed and scale of urbanisation and
population growth in cities across Asia over the last 50-70 years have been
unprecedented.
This has coincided with a shift in disease burden, where increase in life
expectancy and decline in some communicable infectious diseases and infant
mortality have been replaced by rising levels of non-communicable diseases
(NCDs) such as hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. In
fact, the rise in NCDs in Asia is among the highest in the world and aligns
with processes of urbanisation that have fostered car dependency, sedentary
and stressful lifestyles, and the adoption of caloric 'Westernised' diets.
"There are no simple, *one-size-fits-all* solutions for the design and
planning of forests and green spaces for health, as contexts are very
different across Asia. It is crucial that decision-makers in Asia in both
forests and health sectors understand the contexts that result in positive
health and wellbeing impacts to ensure that policies and strategies
effectively secure and enhance them," says *Dr. Shureen Faris Abdul Shukor*,
Associate Professor, Universiti Putra Malaysia.
Several case studies of natural ecosystem restoration and reconstruction in
Asia have already demonstrated the potential to strengthen synergies
between health and other benefits from forests while minimising trade-offs.
"Successes and lessons learnt from such cases can inform strategies to
promote sustainable economic development while maintaining the
sustainability of forests and enhancing the provision of essential
ecosystem services that contribute to human health and wellbeing,
especially among vulnerable population groups," says *Dr. Cecil
Konijnendijk*, Honorary Professor, University of British Columbia, Canada.

Building upon the popular 'Communicating Forest Science

manual published almost a decade ago, the IUFRO Working Party on
Communications and Public Relations has set to revisit this precious
resource to make it aligned with the latest trends. The new manual aims at
equipping scientists and science communicators with knowledge on
communication theory and practice. Drawing upon the digital tools, the
revamped manual will be exclusively available online thus giving
possibilities to easily link to external resources, embed other digital
materials like podcasts and videos and finally make it a living resource to
be updated as needed.
The team is looking for additional volunteers to produce the revamped
manual in time for the IUFRO Congress in Sep 2024. Ideally, candidates
would come from within the IUFRO network or are experienced forest science
communicators who know IUFRO. If you are interested, please contact me or
any of the working party deputies. We particularly encourage applications
from members from the Global South. *IUFRO-SPDC will offer a full
sponsorship for authors/contributors* of the manual who are eligible for SAP

(*Vienna, 12 June 2023*). After a highly competitive bidding process, the
International Council of IUFRO, the International Union of Forest Research
Organizations, approved the 62nd IUFRO Board recommendations to hold the
27th IUFRO World Congress in Nairobi, Kenya.

"We are thrilled about the decision to take the IUFRO World Congress to
Africa for the first time in the history of our Organization. The beautiful
country of Kenya is an oasis of biodiversity, has strong forest traditions
and a lively forest research community that is well-connected
internationally. This makes it an attractive Congress venue in many
respects," says IUFRO President Dr. John Parrotta.
One year before the era of the UN Sustainable Development Goals closes,
this Congress will offer the world of forest science an excellent
opportunity to take stock of the role of forests in the achievement of the
global environmental, social and economic agenda. The Congress will allow
us to highlight and acknowledge particularly the crucial roles that African
forests, forestry and forest science have been playing in attaining these
goals at global, regional and local levels.
The IUFRO Members in Kenya and their regional partners welcome the decision
by global researchers and practitioners to visit and experience forests and
forestry in Africa.
"Our aim is to host the strongest-ever delegation of African participants
to an IUFRO World Congress in terms of numbers, presentations, and
exhibitions. They will jointly demonstrate with international partners and
peers the value of worldwide cooperation in *ADVANCING GLOBAL PARTNERSHIPS
IN FORESTRY RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT*, which is the theme of the Congress,"

Profiling the status of Africa’s forestry in the global arena by 2030 has
been at the center of the successful bid presented by KEFRI on behalf of
the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry and other
ministries of the Government of Kenya. Also supporting the bid were other
IUFRO Member Organizations based in Kenya, namely: The World Agroforestry
Centre (ICRAF), the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) and
the African Forest Forum (AFF). In addition, there is strong national
partnership with the Kenya Forest Service, the Green Belt Movement and The
University of Nairobi. The host country counts on the support of its
neighbours and other partners across Africa in extending the experience of
Congress guests beyond its national borders.
At the 27th IUFRO World Congress in 2029, African scientists and actors in
the forest sector will showcase regional efforts to ensure that the
aspirations of Africa as captured in the Agenda 2063 will be on course.
This Continental agenda spanning 2013-2063 was launched during the 50th
(fiftieth) anniversary of the founding of the African Union (AU) by African
Heads of States and Governments. It is the long-term development vision for
the continent in all aspects including environment and forestry sectors.
The African Union Commission endorsed the Congress bid by the Republic of
Kenya since it contributes to African continent development aspirations by
2030 and beyond.
