International Workshop on Forest Science Publishing

Dear Colleague,
The International Workshop on Forest Science Publishing will be the first activity of the new Working Party 9.01.06 of IUFRO. The initiative to establish the Working Party was made in the IUFRO World Congress in Salt Lake City, USA, in October 2014. The aim of the working party is to provide a forum for discussions, training, exchange of ideas, and development of editorial practices of journals dealing with forests, wood science, and related research. The Working Party and its first meeting are expected to be of special interest to the editors, editorial board members, and reviewers of peer-reviewed forest science journals for discussing timely issues on scientific publishing.
Based on feedback from Working Party members, the first workshop will emphasise peer-review and open access/open data issues yet contributions on any issue relevant to forest science publishing are welcome. The workshop will be composed of keynote talks, voluntary oral and poster presentations, and working groups. The working groups will formulate the activities of the Working Party until the next IUFRO World Congress in 2019.

The abstract submission will be open through 15 August 2015. Registration at the lower fee 380 € will be open through 9 September 2015. Thereafter the registration fee will increase to late level 460 €. Abstract submission will redirect you to the Open Journal System of the Finnish Society of Forest Science and the Natural Resources Institute Finland.
We ask you to read the Author Guidelines before submitting an abstract. Selected presentations will be published as full articles in a special issue of Silva Fennica (www.silvafennica.fi<http://www.silvafennica.fi>).

Our keynote speaker is South Africa’s National Minister for Science and Technology, Minister Naledi Pandor, and other invited speakers include IUFRO President, Prof Mike Wingfield, FORNESSA’s Dr Joe Cobbinah and a number of top South African research scientists and leaders. Further details of these are attached.
We have had confirmation from the WFC 2015 that we will present the outcome of the Symposium as a paper at the Congress highlighting the current and future importance and impact of forestry research in the region.
The event also provides a valuable information sharing and networking forum and an excellent opportunity for international and national participants to engage in dialogue in support of growing collaboration and partnerships and we hope to see many of you at the Symposium!

First Annual FLARE Network Conference

In early December, Paris will host the Conference of Parties on Climate Change. The Musee de l’Homme Research Group on Social and Natural Evolution, theInternational Forestry Resources and Institutions (IFRI) research network (coordinated from the School of Natural Resource and Environment at the University of Michigan), and Program on Forests of the World Bank (PROFOR) announce the first annual conference of the FLARE (Forests and Livelihoods: Assessment, Research, and Engagement) network. FLARE aims to advance cutting edge knowledge and practices regarding forest-based livelihoods, biodiversity, and climate change. The meeting will help improve the understanding of the approaches, methods, tools, and indicators to assess how, where, and why governance of forest and forest mosaics for improving livelihoods works, and how it can be strengthened.
We invite proposals focusing on the relationship between forests and livelihoods, the different ways in which forests are imagined, accessed, used, and governed, and the effects of attempts to reshape existing relationships. In particular, we are interested in the work of practitioners and scholars who work at the interface of forest conservation and livelihoods with the goal of sharing knowledge about their experiences and findings. We expect papers presented at the meeting to: use qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods and evidence to report on findings; examine tradeoffs and synergies in forest management and outcomes; and generate a conversation to promote greater visibility and use of key findings, methods, data, and experiences of researchers, practitioners, and decision makers alike. The conference aims to produce a summary document on the state of impact assessment and monitoring efforts, and the impacts of forestry interventions on livelihoods and biodiversity.
CONFERENCE THEMES
Proposals for oral presentations, lightning talks, posters, and workshops can address one or more of the following six sub-themes related to forests and livelihoods: 1) Governance and Landscapes; 2) Agricultural Commodities; 3) Social and Biological Aspects of Forest Dependence; 4) Impact Evaluations; 5) Pathways to Prosperity; 6) Climate
Interested participants are invited to submit abstracts (no longer than 500 words) of their proposed presentations, posters, or workshops. Abstract submission deadline is July 15, 2015. Notification of acceptance/decline will be given by August 1, 2015.

This event will take place on Friday 4 September 2015 at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Durban South Africa, and is a pre-congress meeting linked to the World Forestry Congress held the following week (7-11 September) at the same venue. The World Congress theme is “Forests and People – Investing in a Sustainable Future” and aims to address some of the key developing issues facing forestry globally, as well as promoting the value of forestry as an investment and development sector of the future (www.wfc2015.org.za)
The Forestry Research Symposium offers the opportunity to focus specifically on research issues and will present a position paper at the Congress highlighting the current and future importance and impact of forestry research in the region.
