Call for Abstracts/Proposals

You are kindly invited to submit your abstract(s) for a paper/poster and a
proposal for a session. The conference program is designed to create a
community of engaged conference participants and bring together
sustainability lovers from all backgrounds to explore innovative forms of
theory, practice, and action that can help craft a path towards
sustainability.

Please note that we have a special call for poster abstracts from students.
There will be 12 awards for the best posters.
Our world is at a tipping point. We have undermined the conditions for
sustainable existence, with no choice but to pull ourselves from the brink.
Sustainability is the core challenge of our era. No academic discipline,
corporation, country, first nation, government, or organization can achieve
sustainability alone. We all have a role to play in the path towards
sustainability.
This inaugural STPPA conference, in collaboration with all who are committed
to sustainability, seeks to bring together academics and students across all
disciplines, Aboriginal leaders and scholars, business executives, civil
society, policymakers, sustainability professionals and other sustainability
lovers to explore innovative forms of theory, practice, and action that can
help craft a path towards sustainability.
The main theme of the conference is the integration across disciplines,
stakeholders, and sustainability pillars (such as social, environmental, and
economic). However, specialization is the key for successful integration.
Hence, both (integration and specialization) types of contributions are
welcome. We are looking forward to contributions from all stakeholders. The
contributions can be on any aspect of sustainability and/or any of the 17
Sustainable Development Goals.
The submission deadline for abstracts and session proposals is May 25, 2019.

About the STTPA Conference
Sustainability rests on the principle that the biosphere is the foundation
for all human activities, and our wellbeing depends on the health of our
shared ecosystems. The path towards sustainability is possible only through
a culture of sustainability that promotes the wellbeing of all generations,
maintains healthy ecosystems, and fosters regenerative relations between
natural, social, and technological systems. No academic discipline,
corporation, country, first nation, government, or organization can achieve
sustainability alone. We all have a role to play in the path towards
sustainability.
The purpose of this conference is to bring together academics and students
across all disciplines, Aboriginal leaders and scholars, business
executives, civil society, policymakers, sustainability professionals and
other sustainability lovers, to explore innovative forms of theory,
practice, and action that can help craft a path towards global
sustainability. The main theme of the conference is integration across
disciplines, stakeholders, and sustainability pillars (such as social,
environmental, and economic).
The conference program will include world renowned keynote speakers,
plenary sessions, panel discussions, integrated (theory, practice, and
action) sessions, concurrent sessions, workshops, poster (research and
practice) presentations, exhibits and other formats of communication
enabling all stakeholders to learn and contribute meaningfully to the path
towards sustainability.

WANGARI MAATHAI "FOREST CHAMPIONS" AWARD - ANNOUNCEMENT OF 2019 AWARDS
You are invited to nominate a candidate for the 2019 CPF Wangari Maathai
"Forest Champions" Award by 10 May! This is a unique opportunity to
acknowledge an inspiring individual who has improved our forests and the
lives of people that depend on them.
The Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF) is awarding one extraordinary
individual for improving our forests and the lives of people who depend on
them!
The CPF launched the first Wangari Maathai Award in 2012 to honour and
commemorate the impact of this extraordinary woman who championed forest
issues around the world. In 2019, the CPF will award another individual for
her/his outstanding achievements for forests.
The awardee will receive a cash prize of USD20,000 along with international
recognition of the outstanding contributions to preserve, restore and
sustainably manage forests and to raise awareness of the key role forests
play in supporting local communities, rural livelihoods, women, youth and
the environment.
The Wangari Maathai Award is an initiative of CBD, CIFOR, CITES, FAO, GEF,
ICRAF, ITTO, IUCN, IUFRO, UNCCD, UNDP, UNEP, UNFCCC, UNFF and World Bank,
all members of the CPF. Nominations will be reviewed by an international
jury of renowned personalities, who will also take into consideration such
elements as empowering women, youth and civil society, fostering social
commitment, promoting networks and improving the valuation of forests in
society.
Eligibility: Applicants should be nominated by a third party. Nominees may
be persons, living or recently deceased, who have made exceptional
contributions to forests. Professional and research contributions will only
be considered if they are conducted outside of normal work-related
responsibilities. Applications received from a nominee's kin or business
partner are not eligible for consideration. Applications related to
grassroots initiatives are particularly encouraged.
Selection: The closing date for receipt of nominations is 10 May 2019. The
awardee will be selected by a jury nominated by CPF members, which will take
into account gender and regional balance when considering potential
awardees.
Announcement: The awardee will be notified of their selection via email in
mid-August 2019. This year's Wangari Maathai Award will be presented on 30
September 2019, at the XXV IUFRO World Congress to be held at Expo Unimed on
29 September - 5 October 2019 in Curitiba, Brazil.

Dear Friends and Colleagues,
We are pleased to share with you details of an upcoming IUFRO conference on Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK), ‘Transforming approaches to forests and forestry through Traditional and Local Knowledges: Reciprocity and relationship-building in forest ecosystems’ to be held on unceded xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Territory, at the University of British Columbia’s Faculty of Forestry 21-23 August 2019.
Principled, reciprocal relationships between researchers and Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs) are at the heart of this conference. Through this event, we welcome knowledge holders of forestry and the environment to share their experiences in building equitable relationships within customary territories. We hope to provide a point of convergence for Indigenous, Local and Western Knowledges, to challenge power dynamics between different ways of knowing, and to model the equitable co-production and sharing of knowledge. Accordingly, the Organizing Committee supports joint presentations, joint papers, and joint projects by and for researchers and IPLCs.
The conference will include an initial day of relationship building among all participants and talks, a panel discussion and workshop events on the following two days. Our objective is to host a different kind of conference that positions the needs, perspectives, and authority of IPLCs at the centre of social-ecological research.
Individual submissions (abstracts)
We invite submission of individual abstracts for poster and oral presentations, artistic performances and exhibitions, songs, workshops, roundtable and panel discussions, and storytelling of up to 300 words addressing one of the following conference themes:
1. Upholding and disseminating forest research practices that comply with Indigenous laws and protocols
2. Weaving Indigenous, Local and Scientific Knowledges and practices together in cross-scale/cross-border/collaborative/participatory forest planning
3. Emerging strategies and technologies for protecting data sovereignty
4. Relational ways of knowing: IPLC cosmologies, more-than-human agency, Rights to Nature
5. Arts-based and IPLC research methods / outputs
6. TEK and food sovereignty
Abstracts should include a description of how principled, reciprocal relationships between researchers and Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs) are being, or have been, upheld as part of the research process.
