We are pleased to share with you details of an upcoming IUFRO conference on Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK), ‘Transforming approaches to forests and forestry through Traditional and Local Knowledges: Reciprocity and relationship-building in forest ecosystems’ to be held on unceded xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Territory, at the University of British Columbia’s Faculty of Forestry 21-23 August 2019.
Principled, reciprocal relationships between researchers and Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs) are at the heart of this conference. Through this event, we welcome knowledge holders of forestry and the environment to share their experiences in building equitable relationships within customary territories. We hope to provide a point of convergence for Indigenous, Local and Western Knowledges, to challenge power dynamics between different ways of knowing, and to model the equitable co-production and sharing of knowledge. Accordingly, the Organizing Committee supports joint presentations, joint papers, and joint projects by and for researchers and IPLCs.
The conference will include an initial day of relationship building among all participants and talks, a panel discussion and workshop events on the following two days. Our objective is to host a different kind of conference that positions the needs, perspectives, and authority of IPLCs at the centre of social-ecological research.
Individual submissions (abstracts)
We invite submission of individual abstracts for poster and oral presentations, artistic performances and exhibitions, songs, workshops, roundtable and panel discussions, and storytelling of up to 300 words addressing one of the following conference themes:
1. Upholding and disseminating forest research practices that comply with Indigenous laws and protocols
2. Weaving Indigenous, Local and Scientific Knowledges and practices together in cross-scale/cross-border/collaborative/participatory forest planning
3. Emerging strategies and technologies for protecting data sovereignty
4. Relational ways of knowing: IPLC cosmologies, more-than-human agency, Rights to Nature
5. Arts-based and IPLC research methods / outputs
6. TEK and food sovereignty
Abstracts should include a description of how principled, reciprocal relationships between researchers and Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs) are being, or have been, upheld as part of the research process.

first of all, I would like to thank you all for your activities and
support of IUFRO and specifically IUFRO Division 9 activities. Its been
again a good year of collaboration. And I would like to take the chance
to send you seasons greetings and wishes for a good start into the new
year 2019 where the *XXV IUFRO World Congress*, the next biggest event
for forestry researchers worldwide will be held in *Curitiba, Brazil
from 29 September to 5 October 2019.*
As you will have been informed earlier, the *deadline for submitting
abstracts* to The World Congress is extended until *January 10th 2019*.
I am pleased to say that there are plenty of sessions organized by
Division 9 - so a lot of space to discuss newest results of social
scientific forest research.
There is also Scientist Assistance Programme (SAP) for supporting
scientists from economically disadvantaged countries whose age below 46
years old. SAP registration will be started from *1 March 2019*. Full

The IUFRO Communications and Public Relations Working Party and Embrapa colleagues from Brazil are co-organizing a session at the 2019 XXV International Union of Forest Research Organizations World Congress<http://iufro2019.com/> in Curitiba, Brazil from 29 September to 5 October 2019. Abstracts are due December 31, 2018.

Consider sharing emerging and innovative approaches such as role-playing exercises, interactions involving computer simulation, co-generation of research, trade-off scenarios, and other complex communications efforts. Both scientists and communication professionals are encouraged to submit to this session.
The session is titled “Delivering and communicating forest science for people and a greener future” and its description follows:
It is not just what you say, but how you say it and who you say it to. The rigor of science and the underlying data can be appreciated by other scientists; but the general public want to know why they should care and decision makers want to know what the data means and how they should interpret your findings. This means going beyond a peer-reviewed publication. It means translating and disseminating your research directly to your audience. This session will explore unique and innovative approaches used by scientists to deliver and communicate their research to the public and decision makers. Have you created a podcast, a video or other tool to tell the story of your science? What have you learned from your approach? Do you host webinars to help others understand your research? What tips do you have for successful online dialogue? Have you created an infographic to help simplify your research for a non-scientific audience? Do you feel it was effective? Have you tried a virtual tour of a field research site or virtual technology transfer? Were the stakeholders satisfied, could virtual tools be a substitute for field tours? How did you determine which approach to use and how do you evaluate your success in using these approaches? Would you recommend this approach to other scientists? Through a series of presentations and posters, we will discuss approaches used by scientists to share their research and what they have learned through that process. This session also seeks to demo effective tools or techniques being developed by IUFRO members to help communicate the importance of forest science. We hope this session will promote discussion and exchange of experiences related to the dissemination of forest research.

benefits to city residents, but relatively little is known about their
structure, the services provided by these forests, and how these forests
are changing. The purpose of this session is to discuss approaches to
inventory urban forests, so that Nations can learn how to monitor these
important forests that directly affect human health and well-being.
*SESSION B5b: **Small-scale sustainable energy alternatives for developing
countries*

SESSION SUMMARY: In developing countries, wood accounts for 50-90% of the
fuel used, and increased efficiency or replacements for wood are needed.
This session explores sustainable energy alternatives. Presentations might
include: utilizing waste through “3R” (reduce, reuse, and recycle); more
efficient technologies for cooking with wood fuel; social costs of
increasing scarcity of fuel wood; characteristics related to fuel wood
energy content; solar cooking as an alternative; potential for material and
energy recovery from waste; appropriate technologies for developing
countries; integrated renewable energy production and utilization from
biomass combustion and waste gasification, among other topics.
*SESSION C1b: Advances in management and science for the high-value
Meliaceae*

SESSION SUMMARY: Tropical timber species of the Meliaceae (including
Cedrela, Entandrophragma, Khaya, Swietenia, and Toona) are among the
world’s finest woods, and many species have other uses. Their sustainable
management faces similar issues around the world. This session will share
the latest in research and applications for a global perspective on these
species. Topics could cover conservation of genetic resources, genetic
improvement, advances in shoot borer control, natural forest management,
and development and products useful for human health, among others.
*SESSION C1c: **Improving high-value Meliaceae yields in plantations*

SESSION SUMMARY: This session will focus on better production of Meliaceae
species grown in plantations. Many species (e.g. mahogany, African
mahogany, Australian red cedar, Melia) have recently been grown as
plantations around the world and research is needed over a wide range of
topics. The main objectives are to share experiences and to find common
research themes to build possible collaborations among researchers working
with Meliaceae species in plantations around the world.
*SESSION C9a: Discovery, curation, and uses of legacy tropical forest data
sets*

SESSION SUMMARY: Legacy tropical forest datasets have been generated by
various projects over time, and many are in danger of being lost. These
datasets are valuable for understanding how tropical forests change through
time, and many of the forests they characterize no longer exist. To
safeguard these data, standardized metadata and electronic archiving
schemes need to be developed. The purpose of the session is to share
information on the potential uses of such datasets, their current status,
and appropriate curation and metadata strategies.
*SESSION F6b: Effective educational strategies for the next generation of
forest professionals *

SESSION SUMMARY: University-based programs on forest related fields are
evolving and inherently need to change towards multidisciplinary programs.
Some major drivers of these changes are globalization of the economy,
climate change, and new technologies and informatics. In a similar vein,
solutions for real life, resource management problems around forest key
issues, like health, bioenergy, climate change are consistently calling for
more holistic and cross-sectoral approaches. Universities curricula need to
meet diverse higher demands, and new ways to approach these challenges
involving various disciplines in a multicultural environment. This session
will highlight findings on research aiming to understand those challenges
and also research that addresses innovative strategies that allow forestry
students and professors and providers of non-formal education to keep
abreast with the time, such online classes, field practices, case studies
among others.
