The deadline for the call for papers for "New Frontiers in Forecasting Forests<http://conferences.sun.ac.za/ff2018/NFFF2018>" to be held in Stellenbosch, South Africa from 25 - 28 September 2018, has been EXTENDED to March 30th. Click here<http://conferences.sun.ac.za/index.php/ff2018/NFFF2018/schedConf/cfp> to submit your abstract now!
Abstracts from participants from all over the world will be selected for oral presentations and posters (with an opportunity for a "lightning talk"). The Scientific Committee will also make a short-list of papers to be considered for a special issue of the international journal Annals of Forest Science<http://www.springer.com/life+sciences/forestry/journal/13595> (5 year IF 2.156). Registration<http://conferences.sun.ac.za/index.php/ff2018/NFFF2018/schedConf/registrati…> cost includes access to all sessions, refreshments and lunch on all full days, as well as admittance to the mid-week conference banquet, cocktails at poster sessions and a stocked conference bag. Delegates also have the option of an extra-cost full day tour of Cape Town and the Cape Peninsula<http://conferences.sun.ac.za/index.php/ff2018/index/about/editorialPolicies…> on Monday 24th (the day before the meeting begins) and an opening cocktail function.
OVERVIEW:
In the context of challenges facing forestry professionals around the world, this conference will provide an opportunity to bring together scientists, modelers and managers in a focused forum to present and discuss advances in models predicting future attributes of forests. The conference will be organised as plenary sessions to bring stakeholders together around five key themes that pertain to the broader topic. Each session will be started by 40 minute presentation from one of our internationallly acclaimed five keynote speakers<http://conferences.sun.ac.za/index.php/ff2018/index/about/editorialPolicies…> to kick off the presentations with a strong view of the area of research. The five themes have been identified as:
* Understanding and evaluating uncertainties in models predicting future growth, yield and wood properties
* The nexus between models of tree growth, wood formation and product properties
* Model application, integration and accessibility for forest management, planning and product development
* The cutting edge in process-based and statistical approaches: how we will model future forest attributes in the 3rd millennium
* Leveraging big data and high technology in forest models
Please feel free to contact the Chairperson of the conference Organising Committee, Dr David Drew<mailto:drew@sun.ac.za> (Stellenbosch University) for more information.

Dear Colleagues,
IUFRO group 4.01.06 - Quantitative Ecology offers a two-days hands-on workshop on Individual/Agent Based Modelling for beginners and more advanced modellers to share experience and tips & tricks thus interfacing ecology, statistics and programming. The event will take place on 20/21 August 2018 at Umeå (Sweden).
Agent/Individual-based modelling (ABM, IBM) techniques have emerged as crucial tools for analysing and understanding self-organisation processes in various ecosystems as well as in social sciences. ABM/IBM is a methodology for relating the micro-level behaviour to the macro- or system-level behaviour and shares certain similarities with game theory. An important part of individual-based models are interaction processes between individuals or agents, e.g. trees, humans or animals.
More information can be found in the attached flyer and on https://www.slu.se/statistics/workshops. Please distribute this information widely.
Sincerely,
Arne Pommerening

TERRAenVISION Environmental Issues Today: Scientific Solutions for Societal Issues
Our Planet suffers from human activities. As scientists, we know more and more about our environment, about processes, rates of change, new threats and risks. However, the challenges seem to grow quicker than the solutions we can create.
This conference aims to focus on the scientific research towards finding solutions for the societal issues of our time. TERRAenVISION promotes interdisciplinary collaboration and networking. To bring scientists and stakeholders that have the same goal, work on the same societal issue, but have different scientific backgrounds. By bringing the people and their knowledge together, we may be able to take the steps towards solutions that can bring our society to a more sustainable situation. In this conference, we want to link to International policies such as the sustainable Development Goals, the UN Climate conventions, CAP and COP.
Environmental issues we would like to highlight and discuss:
This conference is framed around themes. Each theme is kicked off by two plenary keynote speeches of 20 min, followed by a discussion. After the plenary session, a range of different parallel sessions will be organised.
We also want to stress that the conference is not only for scientists, but also warmly would like to invite people from outside the scientific world.
The themes:
1. Climate change: Mitigation and Adaptation
2. Water Resources: Quality and Quantity
3. Land Degradation and Restoration
4. Nature based solutions
5. Fire in the earth system, effects and prevention
6. Ecosystem services and Health
7. Science interface: with policy and public
