Betreff: Invitation to Decision Support Systems Conference
Dear colleagues, dear friends!
It gives me great pleasure to invite you to participate at the international
and interdisciplinary conference "The 19th Open Conference of the IFIP WG
8.3 on Decision Support Systems" (IFIP DSS 2018) which will take place in
Ljubljana, Slovenia, June 13-15, 2018.
Please, see the detailed information at http://ifip2018dss.ijs.si/
The theme of the conference "DSS Research Delivering High Impacts to
Business and Society" highlights the main purpose of the DSS: providing
support to people and organizations faced with difficult decision problems
in a variety of contexts. This requires applying the DSS expertise to
problems that arise in other disciplines, such as specific business areas, ,
ecology, natural sciences, management, social affairs, healthcare, media and
many others. The DSS researchers should collaborate with other domains of
expertise and leverage the DSS expertise to solve other people's problems.
On this basis, we aim to continue the success of past IFIP WG 8.3
conferences in supporting the dissemination of quality research, but also to
provide a memorable experience through our hospitality and conference
facilities in Ljubljana, the European Green Capital 2016. The 2018 IFIP WG
8.3 conference is organized by Jozef Stefan Institute, the largest Slovenian
research institute, supported by several other institutions and in
celebration of the 20th anniversary of the 1998 IFIP WG 8.3 conference that
was held in Bled, Slovenia.
The IFIP WG 8.3 conference committees welcomes both academic and
practitioner community contributions on a wide range of topics using a range
of scholarly approaches that showcase the latest innovations and
achievements in decision support and decision making. Submitted
contributions that showcase methodological advances and real case studies
will be especially welcomed. All contributions will be peer-reviewed and the
acceptance of a contribution will be based on the originality of the work,
the relevance to the conference theme and its overall quality.
The 2018 Open Conference of the IFIP WG 8.3 will highlight the applications,
methods, analytics, stakeholders and impacts of decision making and decision
support in today's society, business and environment.

Subject: Input to the 2019 GSDR
Dear Colleagues,
We are writing to request your input to the 2019 Global Sustainable
Development Report (GSDR). The GSDR, mandated by the United Nations' Member
States in the outcome document of the 2012 Rio + 20 conference, is meant to
strengthen the science-policy interface and provide a strong evidence-based
instrument to support policymakers in promoting poverty eradication and
sustainable development.
The GSDR is being drafted by an independent group of scientists (IGS),
supported by a task team of six UN-system agencies. Profiles of the 15 IGS
members are found here:
https://sustainabledevelopment.un.org/globalsdreport/2019)
As part of its outreach efforts, the IGS is soliciting inputs from a diverse
group of scientific and non-scientific communities, from all over the world,
in the form of publications supported by short abstracts or descriptions of
case studies. Currently, we are requesting contributions in four major
areas:
(1) interactions among SDGs and their targets,
(2) transformation pathways towards sustainable development;
(3) looking beyond the SDGs (major issues identified by research which are
not explicitly taken into account in the SDGs), and
(4) the role of science for sustainable development. Contributions will be
acknowledged in the GSDR.
If you are interested in contributing to this important exercise, please
follow the below link to a questionnaire.

With many thanks and kind regards,
Ernest Foli, PhD.

Read an interview with Division 4 Coordinator Jean-Luc Peyron of the Public
Interest Group (GIP) on Forest Ecosystems (ECOFOR), France, about the work
in IUFRO Division 4 and the All-Division Meeting at the IUFRO 125th
Anniversary Congress.
The research range of Division 4 is rather broad, but it is consistent with
the needs of policy makers and forest practitioners. For the Freiburg
Congress, Division 4 organized more than 20 sessions.
Technological developments give great opportunities to forest assessment,
information systems, and the constitution and use of big data sets.
Forest assessment measurements are made in order to predict the value of
some variables and models are run to predict the evolution of those
variables. There are uncertainties behind those results, especially when the
prediction horizon is long.
It is therefore important to produce models that integrate several scenarios
and also take into account several management options. And that has to be
communicated transparently to decision makers.
