Forest management often does not give full attention towards the management
of non-timber forest products because timber production is the main
ecosystem service provided. In this presentation the future potential of
NWFPs for diversifying the forest bioeconomy in different European regions
is investigated. The results of several case studies are based on a
multi-criteria analysis, including stakeholder interaction and expert
involvement. Forest owners who are willing to focus their management on the
joint production of wood and non-wood resources will be able to learn about
the most successful combinations in a given ecological and socio-economic
context. The presentation intends to unravel perspectives for forest owners
in particular as they act as main suppliers of NWFP raw materials and thus
can be understood as key actors in a forest bioeconomy. Due to the varying
socio-economic and ecological environments, there is huge potential to
strengthen the economic viability of rural areas and a sustainable
co-production may foster the ecological integrity of forest ecosystems
across Europe.

management in the context of sustainability and biodiversity.

Forest Seedling Root Development and Function
for Reforestation and Restoration October 19-21, 2021 • Virtual
SCOPE AND OBJECTIVES:
This IUFRO symposium is intended to provide a forum for exchange of ideas related to principles of root development in nursery seedlings and juvenile forest trees. Emphasis will be placed on the development of effective and environmentally sound technologies to optimize seedling quality and promote reforestation and forest restoration operations. Speaker topics will focus on seedling root development in the nursery and in the field. The program is aimed toward an international audience of nursery and forest practitioners, scientists, and educators. Presentations will be of excellent scientific quality while also providing new, useful information which can be readily and widely applied to nursery and forest practices.
ORGANIZERS:
The symposium is being organized by Western Forestry and Conservation Association, Purdue University, and USDA Forest Service with support from IUFRO divisions 1.01.03 (Temperate Forest Regeneration), 1.06.00 (Restoration of Degraded Sites), and 3.02.00 (Stand Establishment and Treatment).
SESSIONS:
In an effort to accommodate multiple time zones, the symposium will be held during three days from 8:00AM to 10:40AM (PDT, UTC-7). Registered attendees will also have exclusive access to recorded sessions for 30 days after the event.

The IUFRO Task Force "Unlocking the Bioeconomy and Nontimber Forest Products" with partners is cohosting a series of presentations to explore how NTFP are integrated into a bioeconomy. A bioeconomy can reduce environmental impacts of economic growth through science-based management that promotes sustainable production. In this series, experts from around the world will share research on nontimber forest products within a bioeconomy concept.
The first webinar will be Tuesday, August 31, 7:30-8:30 a.m. ET. Register<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fus02web.z…> for the webinar. The attached flyer provides more information on this month's speaker.
The series will feature monthly webinars over the next year, leading up to the UN FAO XV World Forestry Congress in May 2022. "Building a Green Healthy and Resilient Future with Forests" is the theme and the Congress will be held in South Korea.
