For sessions involving oral presentations, the Congress Scientific Committee recommends 10-15 min including discussion for standard oral presentations, but you may want to consider also shorter (5-10 min) and even flash talks (3-5 min). All contributions to your session must be submitted in the Call for Abstracts, and that also include speakers in panel discussions.
For sessions involving poster presentations, the Congress Organizing Committee is pleased to communicate that there will be only electronic posters and that the session will be split in two parts - one oral part and one poster part. Session organizers are required to propose a moderator also for their poster session, as it will include short oral presentations of the posters.

T2.18. Mixed forest plantations as natured-based solutions for climate change mitigation and adaptation

Forest plantations globally provide an increasingly large share of the wood products that contribute to a carbon-neutral bioeconomy, while reducing the harvest pressure on native and natural forests. Their importance is likely to increase with the projected rise in the global demand for the provision of multiple forest goods, and the increasing threat to natural forests posed by climate change. Yet, plantations are faced with controversies related to the potential negative impacts of dominating monospecific plantations for the maintenance of biodiversity and ecosystem functions and to the increasing vulnerability of monocultures to biotic and abiotic risks intensified by climate change (CC).
A growing body of evidence suggests that multi-specific mixed forest plantations provide a wider array of ecosystem services and can be more efficient in sequestrating carbon, while better coping with CC-related stress and biotic disturbances. These results can be traced to mechanisms of complementary or facilitated resource use and alleviated competition in mixed plantations, and can result from a “portfolio effect” of diversification that minimizes the risk of a given species or forest function to be drastically affected. Nevertheless, there is an apparent reluctance among landowners and stakeholders to adopt mixed plantations as a nature-based solution for CC mitigation and adaptation. Among the possible factors preventing the expansion of mixed plantations is an insufficient scientific base for management practices regarding the type of species mixtures that optimize CC mitigation, adaptation and ecosystem functioning across contrasting site conditions.
This session focuses on findings from tree diversity experiments, silvicultural trials comparing mixtures with monocultures, and analyses of the socio-economic contexts of tree-species diverse plantations. This session presents recent research that 1) improves the mechanistic understanding behind the potential of mixed- forest plantations to mitigate and adapt to climate change, or 2) identifies trade-offs and synergies among adaptation, mitigation and other objectives in the management of mixed-forest plantations. The final aim of this session is to identify the knowledge gaps that prevent progress towards a wider implementation of mixed plantations in adaptive forest management strategies and restoration measures, and to discuss research approaches to fill these gaps.

T1.34 Transitioning to Continuous Cover Forestry in Times of Climate Change and Energy Crisis
Continuous Cover Forestry (CCF) is forest management based on ecological principles with a view to avoid degradation effects. Throughout the world and in the literature the concept goes by many semi-synonyms which do not exactly mean the same but are headed approximately into the same direction. For example, one of these semi-synonyms is nature-based forest management. CCF has a long history in Central Europe but is comparatively new to other parts of the world. Currently the popularity of CCF is on the increase again for its potential to mitigate climate change, to increase or at least maintain biodiversity in forest ecosystems, to provide valuable tools for forest conservation and to enhance the appeal of woodlands used for recreation. Recently the EU forest strategy for 2030 stated clearcutting should be “used only in duly justified cases, for example, when proven necessary for environmental or ecosystem health reasons” and the strategy promotes “the creation or maintenance at stand and landscape level of genetically and functionally diverse, mixed‐species forests.” Early in 2022, the European Forest Institute (EFI) has launched a new strategy underpinning CCF principles with scientific evidence. It is particularly the early phase of transitioning towards CCF, i.e. the introduction of CCF to a country or region where this management type has not been commonly used before, which usually constitutes a major challenge for forest practice and stakeholders. For example, this was the situation 20 years ago in Ireland and in the UK and CCF is now being considered for introduction in the congress host country Sweden. A long-standing and crucial question is how natural disturbances can be more directly included in the design of CCF methods. The recent global energy crisis has added another challenging facet to implementing CCF and methods like the coppice selection system and coppice with
standards may now assume greater importance than they did in the past. A topic close to the heart of forest practice is the important question how, in the context of these current challenges, the sustainability of ecosystem goods and services can be ensured in CCF and its variants. Effective methods of safeguarding ecosystem goods and services may, for example, require forest inventory designs to be adopted.

T1.8 Complex forests: Understanding and management of multiple species,
structures and ecosystem services.
Forestry faces important challenges in the decades ahead. The quick global
change affecting the climate system, economy and biodiversity has put
forests in the front line of mitigation and adaptation policies across the
world with different approaches. In temperate regions forest researchers and
practitioners have already understood that more structurally and
compositional diverse forest stands are essential to meet climate and
bioeconomy targets.
This session will present current knowledge on complex forest structures
research and practice. It will cover silvicultural and ecological aspects of
multiple species and multi-aged stands dynamics as well as the consequences
of increasing complexity for forest functioning, ecosystem services
provision and biodiversity conservation. The session will also deal with
measuring and modelling challenges that foresters and researchers are
currently confronting. A final discussion among moderators, presenters and
public will summarize the future of complex forest structures within the
forestry discipline and their benefits for the bioeconomy.
Presentations for oral contributions and posters are welcome on the
following topics:
(i) Multiple species silviculture; (ii) Multi-aged structure silviculture;
(iii) Functions, services and biodiversity and (iv) Measuring and Modelling
the forest complexity.

Dear forest scientists and experts, dear IUFRO members, dear colleagues,
The Congress Scientific Committee (CSC) is pleased to announce that the Call for Abstracts for the XXVI IUFRO Congress in Stockholm, Sweden, 23-29 June 2024, is open and welcomes submissions of abstracts for presentations in sub-plenary, technical and poster sessions.
To submit your abstract, please take the following steps:
1. Consult the list of sessions at Call for Congress Abstract | IUFRO Stockholm 2024 (iufro2024.com)<https://iufro2024.com/call-for-congress-abstract>
2. Submit your abstract at Abstract Submission | IUFRO 2024<https://www.appinconf.com/kas/Abstract?projectName=iufro2024abstracts>
A form for abstract submission is available online. You will be required to insert a title (max 150 characters), authors with their affiliation (the author presenting the paper or poster at the Congress must be designated as the Presenting Author), and text (max 350 words describing context, specific topic of the study, methods, main results, and conclusions in plain writing). No figures, tables or list of references should be added. Please note that abstracts may be submitted in English only.
Authors must select one of the following options: oral only; poster only; oral or poster. The session organizers will decide on the length of a talk, which could range from 2-3 minutes for flash talks to 15 minutes or more for regular talks. Please note that poster presenters will be given the opportunity to present their work orally (2-3 min) during moderated poster sessions. The Congress will feature only digital poster displays to ensure high visibility for poster presentations. Poster areas will be open and free to visit during the whole Congress.
Authors are limited to a maximum of two abstracts as presenting author, although an individual may be listed as a co-author on several abstracts. Abstracts not associated with one of the sessions in the list may be assigned to a general poster session. Session organizers will review the abstracts for scientific quality, topical significance and relevance to the Congress themes<https://iufro2024.com/iufro-world-congress-2024/forests-and-society-towards…> and to the particular session to which the abstract is submitted, and assign them as oral or poster presentations. You will be informed in due time about the type and length of your presentation.

Abstracts will be accepted until 2 June 2023. Authors will be informed if their presentation is accepted by 30 October 2023. In order to remain in the programme, the registration deadline for Presenting Authors of accepted abstracts is 15 January 2024.

SCIENTIFIC ACHIEVEMENT AWARD (SAA)
Up to 10 awards will be given in recognition of distinguished individual scientific achievements within the fields of research covered by IUFRO.

IUFRO STUDENT AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN FOREST SCIENCE (ISA)
This award recognizes outstanding individual achievements in forest science made by Masters degree students (or equivalent) completed in the period 2018-2023, in order to encourage their further work within the fields of research covered by IUFRO.
One award per IUFRO Division may be made for work related to the themes of the IUFRO World Congress. Nominations can be made through IUFRO Members and through the International Forestry Students' Association (IFSA) via the IFSA Secretariat/Liaison Officer.
The Award shall consist of a certificate, the most economical cost of (air) travel/subsidized travel to attend the World Congress, and waiver of the Congress registration fee. The SAA will be presented at the opening or closing ceremony of the World Congress. For the ODRA and ISA, the awards will be presented in a special session where awardees are given the opportunity to present highlights of their award winning work. All award winners will be announced in a special issue of IUFRO News and in other media.

In addition to these awards, the Congress 2024 will offer:
Best Poster Award (BPA)
To encourage public dissemination of high-quality research and to recognize distinguished poster presentations during the IUFRO World Congress by under-graduate students, graduate students and individuals who completed their graduate degrees up to 7 years prior to the Congress. A number of awards will be presented for applications submitted by the corresponding author during the online submission of the abstract. Applications shall be finalized two months before the Congress by submitting the final pdf of the poster presentation. Shortlisted poster presentations will be judged directly at the IUFRO World Congress. The awards will be mentioned during the closing ceremony.
IUFRO World Congress Host Scientific Award
This award honours one or more truly outstanding scientists from the Congress host country who has elevated the profile of forest science and research.
