including: harvest policies, regulations, and planning; regeneration and
genetic variation; silvicultural practices; modelling to balance
extraction, regeneration, and genetic diversity; and market demand to

at the National to Local Scale*

SESSION SUMMARY: Trees and forests within urban areas provide numerous
benefits to city residents, but relatively little is known about their
structure, the services provided by these forests, and how these forests
are changing. The purpose of this session is to discuss approaches to
inventory urban forests, so that Nations can learn how to monitor these
important forests that directly affect human health and well-being.
*SESSION B5b: **Small-scale sustainable energy alternatives for developing
countries*

SESSION SUMMARY: In developing countries, wood accounts for 50-90% of the
fuel used, and increased efficiency or replacements for wood are needed.
This session explores sustainable energy alternatives. Presentations might
include: utilizing waste through “3R” (reduce, reuse, and recycle); more
efficient technologies for cooking with wood fuel; social costs of
increasing scarcity of fuel wood; characteristics related to fuel wood
energy content; solar cooking as an alternative; potential for material and
energy recovery from waste; appropriate technologies for developing
countries; integrated renewable energy production and utilization from
biomass combustion and waste gasification, among other topics.
*SESSION C1b: Advances in management and science for the high-value
Meliaceae*

SESSION SUMMARY: Tropical timber species of the Meliaceae (including
Cedrela, Entandrophragma, Khaya, Swietenia, and Toona) are among the
world’s finest woods, and many species have other uses. Their sustainable
management faces similar issues around the world. This session will share
the latest in research and applications for a global perspective on these
species. Topics could cover conservation of genetic resources, genetic
improvement, advances in shoot borer control, natural forest management,
and development and products useful for human health, among others.
*SESSION C1c: **Improving high-value Meliaceae yields in plantations*

SESSION SUMMARY: This session will focus on better production of Meliaceae
species grown in plantations. Many species (e.g. mahogany, African
mahogany, Australian red cedar, Melia) have recently been grown as
plantations around the world and research is needed over a wide range of
topics. The main objectives are to share experiences and to find common
research themes to build possible collaborations among researchers working
with Meliaceae species in plantations around the world.
*SESSION C9a: Discovery, curation, and uses of legacy tropical forest data
sets*

SESSION SUMMARY: Legacy tropical forest datasets have been generated by
various projects over time, and many are in danger of being lost. These
datasets are valuable for understanding how tropical forests change through
time, and many of the forests they characterize no longer exist. To
safeguard these data, standardized metadata and electronic archiving
schemes need to be developed. The purpose of the session is to share
information on the potential uses of such datasets, their current status,
and appropriate curation and metadata strategies.
*SESSION F6b: Effective educational strategies for the next generation of
forest professionals *

SESSION SUMMARY: University-based programs on forest related fields are
evolving and inherently need to change towards multidisciplinary programs.
Some major drivers of these changes are globalization of the economy,
climate change, and new technologies and informatics. In a similar vein,
solutions for real life, resource management problems around forest key
issues, like health, bioenergy, climate change are consistently calling for
more holistic and cross-sectoral approaches. Universities curricula need to
meet diverse higher demands, and new ways to approach these challenges
involving various disciplines in a multicultural environment. This session
will highlight findings on research aiming to understand those challenges
and also research that addresses innovative strategies that allow forestry
students and professors and providers of non-formal education to keep
abreast with the time, such online classes, field practices, case studies
among others.

I am writing to you today because we started to work an ambitious conservation project here in Chile, using somatic embryogenesis in Araucaria araucana, we are based on studies in Araucaria angustifolia described in the book "In Vitro Embryogenesis in Higher Plants, 2016" (Ed. Maria Antonietta Germanà and Maurizio Lambardi).
There is very little information in relation to this species (Araucaria araucana) so, Has anyone worked with this gender or family, and can you recommend me an article?

Dr. Tuija Aronen (Luke, Finland) would like to announce that a Post-Doctoral position is now opened to develop a project about "Potentials of combining somatic embryogenesis (SE) and marker assisted selection (MAS) in Norway spruce" with a focus on early selection for resistance against the major forest pathogen, Heterobasidion annosum.
The project is over 2 years (Dec. 2018-2020) and the Post-Doc will have a position at Luke (Finland) but will also work part time at SLU (Sweden).

Our main objective is to foster the development and practical outcomes of vegetative propagation (bio)technologies for conservation, breeding/selection and efficient, cost-effective deployment of resilient, productive tree /woody plant varieties.
During our last Conference in La Plata (September 2016, https://www.iufro.org/science/divisions/division-2/20000/20900/20902/public…) the importance of plantation forestry was highlighted as forests are becoming increasingly fragmented and vulnerable in the context of both anthropic- and climate related pressure. Flexible and popular, low-cost vegetative propagation methods are considered critical and well-suited (especially somatic embryogenesis) for both sustainable plantation forestry and conservation of genetic resources. Application-oriented research efforts in close collaboration with breeders may allow the careful selection and cost-effective, rapid deployment (and turn-over) of elite varieties expressing natural or induced adaptation response to environmental stress.
The main topics of the conference therefore include physiological, biochemical, molecular and (epi)genetic aspects of somatic embryogenesis and other cloning technologies, feedback from field trials and their application in tree breeding as well as industrial production of varieties. Anyway, contributions on complementary issues are welcome (e.g. conservation, genetic transformation) including social and regulatory aspects related with clonal trees.
Since inception at the initiative of Yill Sung Park (2008), our Working Party had already 4 successful conferences: Suwon2010 (Korea), Brno2012 (Czech Republic), Vitoria2014 (Spain) and La Plata2016 (Argentina). We are expecting strong participation for Coimbra2018 as well, and we have the pleasure to invite all colleagues interested by the vegetative propagation of trees to contribute to the scientific program and discussions.

v We strongly encourage young scientists to attend the Conference and make oral or poster presentations. Following Vitoria2014 and LaPlata2016 we are keen to announce our third student’s awarding scientific competition. The related information is available at our Conference Website. Our main objective is to foster the development and practical outcomes of vegetative propagation (bio)technologies for conservation, breeding/selection and efficient, cost-effective deployment of resilient, productive tree /woody plant varieties.
During our last Conference in La Plata (September 2016, https://www.iufro.org/science/divisions/division-2/20000/20900/20902/public…) the importance of plantation forestry was highlighted as forests are becoming increasingly fragmented and vulnerable in the context of both anthropic- and climate related pressure. Flexible and popular, low-cost vegetative propagation methods are considered critical and well-suited (especially somatic embryogenesis) for both sustainable plantation forestry and conservation of genetic resources. Application-oriented research efforts in close collaboration with breeders may allow the careful selection and cost-effective, rapid deployment (and turn-over) of elite varieties expressing natural or induced adaptation response to environmental stress.

The main topics of the conference therefore include physiological, biochemical, molecular and (epi)genetic aspects of somatic embryogenesis and other cloning technologies, feedback from field trials and their application in tree breeding as well as industrial production of varieties. Anyway, contributions on complementary issues are welcome (e.g. conservation, genetic transformation) including social and regulatory aspects related with clonal trees.
Since inception at the initiative of Yill Sung Park (2008), our Working Party had already 4 successful conferences: Suwon2010 (Korea), Brno2012 (Czech Republic), Vitoria2014 (Spain) and La Plata2016 (Argentina). We are expecting strong participation for Coimbra2018 as well, and we have the pleasure to invite all colleagues interested by the vegetative propagation of trees to contribute to the scientific program and discussions.

v We strongly encourage young scientists to attend the Conference and make oral or poster presentations. Following Vitoria2014 and LaPlata2016 we are keen to announce our third student’s awarding scientific competition. The related information is available at our Conference Website. Dear Colleagues of IUFRO Division 2 and IUFRO 2.09.02 Unit,
Pr. Ulrika Egertsdotter (UPSC, Umea, Sweden) and Dr. Marie-Anne Lelu-Walter (INRA, Orléans, France) communicated to me that a Post-Doctoral position is opened to
develop a project about "enabling scale-up of somatic embryogenesis plant production by physiological analysis of embryos processed in bioreactors and the R&D SE System for harvest".
Project is over 2 years and post-doc will work both at UPSC and INRA.
Target species are the conifers PIcea abies and Larix spp. See the attached Program Description of the Post-Doctoral Research fellow, instructions and links for further information of candidates.

Considering our upcoming IUFRO 2.09.02 Conference “Clonal Trees in the Bioeconomy Age” to be held in Coimbra (Portugal) during September 10-15, 2018, the Organizing Committee decided to offer some deadlines extension:
June 22 (in just 3 weeks) for both abstract submission and application to IUFRO travel grants available to forest scientists from economically disadvantaged countries.
Two weeks remaining (June 15) to participate in the 3rd IUFRO 2.09.02 Student’s Scientific Awarding Competition!
The deadline for early bird registration is also extended to July 7th.

Our main objective is to foster the development and practical outcomes of vegetative propagation (bio)technologies for conservation, breeding/selection and efficient, cost-effective deployment of resilient, productive tree /woody plant varieties.
During our last Conference in La Plata (September 2016, https://www.iufro.org/science/divisions/division-2/20000/20900/20902/public…) the importance of plantation forestry was highlighted as forests are becoming increasingly fragmented and vulnerable in the context of both anthropic- and climate related pressure. Flexible and popular, low-cost vegetative propagation methods are considered critical and well-suited (especially somatic embryogenesis) for both sustainable plantation forestry and conservation of genetic resources. Application-oriented research efforts in close collaboration with breeders may allow the careful selection and cost-effective, rapid deployment (and turn-over) of elite varieties expressing natural or induced adaptation response to environmental stress.
