The world's forests seem beset on all sides.
Rising populations and improved incomes are increasing demands for forest
products and services ranging from the traditional – food, fuel and timber
– to more recently recognized needs such as biomass, bioenergy, nature
conservation, recreation and health, as well as forest biodiversity
conservation.
At the same time, those rising populations – and changing preferences, such
as increased demand for meat and dairy products – lead to forests being
cleared to free up land for agricultural and pasture purposes.
Add the other drivers of deforestation and forest degradation, plus
increasing temperatures, rapidly altering precipitation patterns and the
impacts of continuously growing carbon dioxide concentrations on forest
vegetation photosynthesis; and then throw in more extreme weather events
that lead to more frequent and intensified droughts and wildfires, the
migration of tree pests and diseases – aided by globalization – and one has
a global forest under siege.
If forests are to survive and prosper in the face of these changing and
challenging climatic and societal conditions, more information is needed on
the biophysical adaptive capacities of trees and forests, as well as the
options for, and limitations of, Adaptive Forest Management (AFM) from
stand scale to landscape scale.
That is the reason for IUFRO's Forest Adaptation and Restoration under
Global Change Task Force. The Task Force aims to compile and improve
globally available scientific and technical knowledge and experiences on
how to achieve optimal adaptation of forests and forest landscapes in the
face of global change.
It will achieve this by "identifying knowledge gaps, comparing existing
activities and techniques and elaborating best practice approaches," said
Andreas Bolte of the Thünen Institute of Forest Ecosystems, Germany, who is
coordinator of the Task Force.
"We will be considering all actions that increase the adaptive capacity of
forests and forested landscapes; combining AFM concepts on a stand-scale
with Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) concepts at the landscape level;
linking national and trans-national policies, as well as trans-disciplinary
expertise in various fields; and integrating experts and working activities
among various specialized IUFRO units," he said.
What has to be done in terms of adaptation and-or restoration can be
dependent on where one is located. "Due to often large-scale
overexploitation and forest landscape degradation in the tropics and
subtropics, forest restoration activities are of particular interest in
those regions," Dr. Bolte said. "On the other hand, assisted migration and
stand transformations are important for adapting many forests in the
temperate and boreal zones."
He added that many restored forests would likely be planted forests, both
native and exotic to the site, with great potential to support sustainable
development of bio-economies, substituting fossil fuels with renewables,
providing other ecosystem services and contributing to biodiversity
conservation.
Despite all the alarming signals for the forests, the adaptation challenges
may also be seen as opportunities. Proper management and expansion of the
world's forests is perhaps the most powerful tool to mitigate climate
change. If societies and their decision makers also realize the value of
this potential, other ecosystem services may benefit and, in this way, the
forest landscape will become better protected too, Dr. Bolte said.
The Task Force on Forest Adaptation and Restoration under Global Change is
one of several established by IUFRO to advance knowledge under five
research themes in accordance with the IUFRO 2015-19 Strategy.
The five themes are: Forests, Soil and Water Interactions; Forests for
People; Forests and Climate Change; Forests and Forest-based Products for a
Greener Future; and Biodiversity, Ecosystem Services and Biological
Invasions.

As singer-songwriter – and recent Nobel Prize winner – Bob Dylan, once
said: The times, they are a-changin'.
That's certainly true in the forest sector where challenges such as
globalization, climate change and societal demands have altered how we
view, study and use the forest.
As the forest industry changes to meet new and evolving demands, so too
does the focus on forest education.
Forest studies that once concentrated primarily on wood as a resource are
now a rarity. Environmental sciences, environmental management, land use,
agroforestry and forest science, plus traditional forestry studies are all
among today's educational mix for those with an interest in the woods.
Part of the reasoning behind that change is because solutions to the
challenges mentioned above call for holistic and cross-sectoral approaches.
Those developments, in turn, have been reflected both in the labor market
and in the demands of students for a greater diversity in subject matter,
experiences and skills.
To strengthen multi-disciplinary research on forests and practices, a Joint
Task Force has been established through a collaborative effort of IUFRO and
the International Forestry Students' Association (IFSA).
The Forest Education Task Force seeks to bring together perspectives and
knowledge from students, educators and other stakeholders; encourage
international discussions on forest education and capacity building;
identify, compile and communicate gaps and challenges in forest education –
especially highlighting new fields of forest education; and to enhance
forestry students' mobility and education opportunities,
"Today's forestry students are tomorrow's forest managers and
decision-makers," said Sandra Rodriguez Pineros of the Autonomous
University of Chihuahua and the IUFRO Coordinator of the Task Force. "We
want to enhance global cooperation among students of forest and related
science in order to broaden knowledge and understanding. That's how we will
achieve a sustainable future for our forests."
"And we also want to provide a voice for youth in international forest
policy processes," said Lena Lackner, of Vienna's University of Natural
Resources and Life Sciences, who is the IFSA Coordinator of the Task Force
.
Over the past few decades there has been a troubling decline in the number
of students enrolling in forestry schools. Some institutions have
terminated their programs.
"We hope that by broadening the scope of student activities and experiences
and modernizing curricula to reflect the 21st Century environment, we will
strengthen research capacity and also make forest education attractive to
young people," Ms. Lackner added.
One of the products from the Task Force will be a "Higher Forest Education
interactive tool." (A beta version can currently be accessed at:
http://www.gfis.net/gfis/education/.) Working with the Global Forest
Information Service (GFIS), data will be available on global forest
education activities and a list of forest faculties and programs worldwide.
In addition to promoting forest education activities online, this
initiative will also enhance students' mobility.
IUFRO and IFSA represent a similar field of interest at a global level and
have a long history of cooperative work on educational matters.
The Task Force on Forest Education is one of several established by IUFRO
to advance knowledge under five research themes in accordance with the
IUFRO 2015-19 Strategy.
The five themes are: Forests, Soil and Water Interactions; Forests for
People; Forests and Climate Change; Forests and Forest-based Products for a
Greener Future; and Biodiversity, Ecosystem Services and Biological
Invasions.

Research Organizations. Its aim is to introduce, in a timely fashion,
significant findings in forest research from IUFRO officeholders and member
organizations to a worldwide network of decision makers, policy makers and
researchers.
IUFRO will encapsulate, and distribute in plain language, brief, topical
and policy-relevant highlights of those findings, along with information on
where/how to access the full documents. The *IUFRO Spotlight* findings will
be distributed in a periodic series of emails as well as blog postings.

The 2015 Global Forest Resources Assessments report from the UN Food and
Agriculture Organization (FAO) noted that "…in planted forests, a new
timber resource is continuing to be created … (that will) contribute
significantly not only to future wood and energy supplies but … (also to) a
range of wider social and environmental benefits…"
About 25 years ago, planted forests represented 4% of the world's forested
area. Today they represent almost 7%. But that 7% provides at least
one-third of the world's timber, so their importance should not be
underestimated.
"We do not consider planted forests as a replacement for natural forests,"
said Dr. Christophe Orazio of the European Forestry Institute and
coordinator of IUFRO's Task Force on Sustainable Planted Forests for a
Greener Future. "We see them as being complementary to natural forests."
"In addition to their economic contributions, they capture significant
amounts of carbon; reduce pressure on natural forests and help offset
deforestation; offer alternatives for climate change adaptation and, since
about 80% of planted forests consists of native species, negative impacts
on biodiversity are limited," he said.
Landscape diversity, in which planted forests cover smaller areas and fit
into the landscape mosaic, can also address the issue of biodiversity
conservation in planted forests, he said.
"Planted forests also contribute to poverty alleviation and are a key
component of the green economy, serving not only the traditional timber
industry but also emerging transformation processes such as bioplastics,
biochemicals and bioenergy," Dr. Orazio added.
The Task Force was established by IUFRO because increased international
scientific cooperation aimed at strengthening the commitment to research
and development is considered critical to the sustainable management of
planted forests.
He noted that globalization, by facilitating the movement of invasive
species, can be a threat to monoculture stands and said his Task Force is
working with the biodiversity Task Force to explore setting up mixed,
two-species plantations.
Two other key considerations are climate change and population growth. When
those are factored in, Dr. Orazio said, priorities – geographic regions
where the need for planted forests can be considered more urgent – can be
identified.
In many developing countries, smallholders and farmers own planted forests
and depend on them for their livelihoods. In addition, a large number of
people – especially women – gain employment from nursery operations, land
preparation, plantation establishment, stand management and maintenance
from wood-based industries.
"Africa, as an example, is one of the areas that would benefit from
sustainable planted forests where they can help combat deforestation and
help provide fuel, food and employment to a rapidly growing population," he
said.
The Task Force's main outcomes will result from a focus on some key issues
related to sustainable intensification – the intensification of planted
forest management aimed at meeting the increasing need for forest products
by a growing population, and doing this in a sustainable manner.
Among the Task Force's deliverables will be a joint scientific journal
paper and a technical 'state of knowledge' brief on planted forests, and
preparation of a scientific journal on "New Practices, Management Tools and
Approaches" in industrial tree plantations in the tropics and subtropics.
The Task Force will also contribute to the organization of the 4th
International Congress on Planted Forests in China in 2018.
The Task Force on Sustainable Planted Forests for a Greener Future is one
of several established by IUFRO to advance knowledge under five research
themes in accordance with the IUFRO 2015-19 Strategy.
