IUFRO 2014 tech session 219: How does biodiversity help to manage high-value timbers and vice versa?

Dear Colleagues: Please consider submitting an abstract for an oral or poster presentation for the IUFRO 2014 World Congress Session #219 – How does biodiversity help to manage high-value timbers and vice versa? Organizers: Sheila Ward (Mahogany for the Future, Inc, Puerto Rico), Emmanuel Opuni-Frimpong (Forest Research Institute of Ghana), & Nicholas Brokaw (University of Puerto Rico) mahoganyforthefuture(a)gmail.com; eofrimpon(a)csir-forig.org.gh; nvbrokaw(a)ites.upr.edu *This session will explore diverse means by which a biodiverse environment positively impacts management of high-value timber species, and, conversely, how management for high-value species helps conserve biodiversity.* Conservation of biodiversity and management for high-value timber species can seem a contradiction. Nevertheless, the demand for these timbers will remain high, as well as an increasing need and demand for management to conserve biodiversity. Needed are ways forward to integrate these management objectives. Management of high-value timber species may help conserve both the target species and the biodiversity of the forests they inhabit. Conversely, biodiversity may contribute to the health of individual trees and populations of high-value species. We aim for a global scope, including tropical and temperate high-value timbers. Presentations might address: biodiversity and protection of high-value species from pests and pathogens, the role of plantations in biodiversity conservation, biodiversity for plantation health, enrichment planting with high value species to maintain biodiversity via intact forest instead of land use change, high-value species and the maintenance of intact forests, use of high value species for habitat rehabilitation and restoration of biodiversity, or high-value plantations as a means to reestablish biodiversity, among other topics. How might more land area devoted to high-value timber in natural forest as well as plantations may help maintain biodiversity and associated ecosystem services? Conversely, how might more intact ecosystems, as indicated by biodiversity, may help in the sustainable production of high-value species? If this is of interest, can you let me know by October 3? Possible technical session for IUFRO 2014

Dear Meliaceae researchers: Do you have studies showing how biodiversity helps to manage high-value species (such as the Meliaceae) or how high value timbers help to conserve biodiversity? Below is an idea for a technical session for the IUFRO 2014 World Congress relating high value tropical timbers and biodiversity Any suggestions would be most welcome, including reorientation of this potential session. If you would like to participate in the session, could you please send me a draft title for your contribution? Please also send this on to anyone else who might be interested. Please send any ideas by April 17, since session proposals are due April 30. ********************************** *How does biodiversity help to manage high-value timber species, and vice-versa?* *Valuable tropical timbers, such as many Meliaceae, remain in high demand, casting a shadow over prospects for these species and their forests. However, management of high-value tropical timber species may help conserve the biodiversity of the forests they inhabit. IUFRO MELIACEAE MEETING 25-26 June 2012 Nairobi, Kenya The first meeting of the IUFRO working party 1.02.04 – Sustainable management and genetic resources in Meliaceae – will be held on Monday and Tuesday June 25 and 25 2012 in Nairobi, Kenya. The purpose is share the latest in research and applications for a global perspective on solutions for the Meliaceae. This meeting will be held in conjunction with the IUFRO-FORNESSA Regional Congress in Africa (IUFRO = International Union of Forest Research Organizations; FORNESSA = Forestry Research Network of Sub-Saharan Africa). We are also investigating a field trip on the Meliaceae for Wednesday July 27. Potential sessions for the Meliaceae meeting are as follows: Advances on the shoot borer Conservation and use of Meliaceae genetic resources (genetics, conservation,germplasm production etc) Population genetics of natural populations Management of Meliaceae plantations Meliaceae ecology and biogeography Meliaceae management in natural forests (including multiple use management) If you would like to chair one of these sessions, or have other suggestions for sessions, please send them to Dr. Sheila Ward (mahoganyforthefuture(a)gmail.com ) by September 1, 2011. These sessions will be coordinated with those of the African Regional Congress.
