*Education is a key lifeline for world's forests*
*New survey points out that forest education must be strengthened to meet
global challenges *[image: Ein Bild, das Baum, draußen, Pflanze, Boden
enthält. Automatisch generierte Beschreibung]
*22 June 2021, Rome* - Forest education at all levels – from primary
schools to universities – is insufficient in many countries of the world,
according to the results of a global survey led by the Food and Agriculture
Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Tropical Timber
Organizations (ITTO) and the International Union of Forest Research
Organizations (IUFRO) with the support of other international and regional
partners.
According to the survey, more must be done to improve forest education in
many parts of the world. While forest education has evolved and the number,
diversity and qualifications of graduates have increased in most regions,
forest education resources are insufficient or limited in large parts of
the global South.
The survey also found that, in most regions, primary and secondary schools
are not effectively educating students about forests and trees, or
motivating them to pursue forest-related studies and careers. Graduates'
understanding of cultural and social aspects of forest and tree management
is often limited. Innovative teaching approaches, digital tools and online
learning resources are not adequately employed in many regions, and forest
education in entrepreneurship and for the preparation of students for the
growing green jobs sector is not sufficient in most regions.
"The sustainable management of forests and trees is crucial to achieving
the Sustainable Development Goals. We must reverse deforestation and forest
degradation and manage forest resources sustainably," said FAO
Deputy-Director General Maria-Helena Semedo in her opening speech at the
event. "To do this, we need a well-trained cadre of forest managers,
workers, policy makers, scientists and educators. We also need the rich and
valuable forest knowledge and skills of local communities and Indigenous
Peoples.
We urgently need to strengthen all levels of formal education - the forest
workforce of the future."
*International Conference on Forest Education*
Key findings of the survey were unveiled at the International Conference on
Forest Education, a three-day event running from 22 – 24 June to shine a
light on the important role forest education plays in maximizing the
contributions of forests and trees to the Sustainable Development Goals,
and for overcoming the growing disconnect between people, nature and
forests. The conference is organized by FAO, ITTO and IUFRO, and is
supported by the Government of Germany.
During the event, participants <http://www.fao.org/3/cb4723en/cb4723en.pdf>
discussed the current state of forest education, sharing their experiences
and perspectives through discussions of key challenges, needs,
opportunities and initiatives to strengthen forest education. It was agreed
that robust forest education and training programmes are vital if we are to
reduce the rate of deforestation and forest degradation, protect and
restore ecosystems, mitigate and adapt to climate change, and
realise the full contributions of forests and trees to the achievement of
the Sustainable Development Goals.
Participants took advantage of the event to endorse a global Call to Action
on forest education. The aim is to raise awareness of the need to
strengthen policies and strategies to improve forest learning at all levels
of education, heighten awareness of the societal importance of careers in
forestry, and improve understanding of traditional and indigenous
forest-related knowledge.
Steve Johnson, ITTO's Officer-in-charge, endorsed the Call to Action saying
that "forests are where most of us learn about the importance of nature in
our lives."
"Education and training on forest management is also crucial to ensure
forest sustainability and productivity into the future, as well as for
developing an informed population that appreciates the many complexities of
Sustainable Forest Management. ITTO will continue to contribute to forest
education and training throughout the tropics, including through our
ground-breaking fellowship program that commenced making awards nearly 30
years ago" he added.
IUFRO President John Parrotta also confirmed the need to strengthen forest
education globally. "IUFRO seeks to advance updating of forestry related
curriculums, promote innovative and improved teaching approaches and
techniques, and help address key gaps in forest education worldwide," he
said.
The Call to Action will be open online for a short period after the event
to encourage other stakeholders and actors to endorse the message.
*Launch of Forest Education Partnership*
The three-day event concluded with the launch by the Collaborative
Partnership on Forests
<http://www.fao.org/policy-support/mechanisms/mechanisms-details/en/c/428692/>
of a Joint Initiative on Forest Education
<http://www.fao.org/forestry/forest-education/98724/en/>, which aims to
catalyse action, generate increased awareness and support, and foster
partnerships for forest education. In doing so, it plans to establish a
Forest Education Partnership, launch an online platform to facilitate
information dissemination and networking on forest education, work to
improve forest education curricula and training systems and run a global
communications campaign to encourage young people to pursue forest-related
careers.

IUFRO Spotlight #89 - What's the buzz? Studying insects on 'the web'
*IUFRO Spotlight* is an initiative of the International Union of Forest
Research Organizations. Its aim is to introduce, in a timely fashion,
significant findings in forest research from IUFRO officeholders and member
organizations to a worldwide network of decision makers, policy makers and
researchers.
IUFRO will encapsulate, and distribute in plain language, brief, topical
and policy-relevant highlights of those findings, along with information on
where/how to access the full documents. The *IUFRO Spotlight* findings will
be distributed in a periodic series of emails as well as blog postings.

A series of webinars, originally seen as a temporary response to some of
the travel constraints imposed by the COVID pandemic, will most likely
continue after post-COVID equilibrium is restored.
"In light of the current pandemic, many scientific meetings were cancelled
– including the many meetings that IUFRO Working Parties (WPs) and other
units host each year," said Dr. Jeremy Allison of the Canadian Forest
Service and coordinator of IUFRO's WP 7.03.16 that deals with *Behavioral
and Chemical Ecology of Forest Insects*.
The webinars, intended to assist forest researchers in staying involved and
current in their areas of interest, were initiated by IUFRO, with support
from the Forestry and Agricultural Biotechnology Institute (FABI) at the
University of Pretoria and the Canadian Forest Service (CFS).
Dr. Allison is quick to acknowledge the contributions of his colleagues to
the success of the webinars – deputy coordinators Sigrid Netherer and
Andrés González Ritzel from his WP; coordinator and deputy coordinators
Juan Corley, Jess Hartshorn and Dimitrios Avtzis from WP 7.03.05 (*Ecology
and management of bark and wood boring insects*); and senior PhD students
Josephine Queffelec and Quentin Guignard from FABI.
"They were instrumental in making this happen and for the success we've
achieved," he said.
"One of the most significant benefits of these virtual meetings is our
engagement with our science and our colleagues. They provide a platform for
these research communities to engage and network while, in this specific
case, promoting the importance of the behavior and chemical ecology of
forest insects and ensuring IUFRO member activities in these areas would
continue during a time where global travel was not possible," Dr. Allison
said.
"Chemical ecology is not an autonomous discipline but rather a way of
viewing the world through a chemical lens," he said. "And behavioral
ecology examines the ecological factors that drive behavioral adaptations.
As a result, the subject matter of our Working Party (WP) – 'Behavioral and
chemical ecology of forest insects' – is very broad."

Participants and attendees interacted either "live" or through recordings
of the events posted to a YouTube channel created for this IUFRO Working
Party.
"While we originally saw the webinars as a response to the pandemic, we
quickly realized that, although a digital divide currently exists, virtual
tools like webinars have immense potential to mitigate some of the
variation in access to networks and information," said Dr. Allison.
The webinars have a global reach. Participants typically are from
government research institutions and academia. Attendance has been as high
as 230 and includes participants and attendees from countries in North and
South America, Europe, Africa, Asia and Oceania.
There are still challenges to be overcome, he notes, before virtual tools
become a commonplace solution for everyone.
"Virtual platforms like Zoom have immense potential to facilitate the
development of networks and the sharing of information. But internet access
is required, and it's been estimated that only about 55% of households
globally have an internet connection. So, connectivity is an issue," he
said.
"Time zones are also a challenge. Although the webinar presentations were
pre-recorded, presenters and delegates attend live to interact with content
and each other. Regardless of what time is selected, it will favor
participation from parts of the world and restrict it in others.
"You also need a platform. The webinar series would not have been possible
without the support of the FABI and CFS.
"We don't advocate for virtual tools/meetings as a replacement for
in-person meetings and training but do view them as a complementary tool.
There is no doubt they are here to stay," Dr. Allison added.
Speaking of the webinar series, he said: "We think the series has been
successful. Almost all the researchers we contacted were happy to
contribute to the webinars.
"And, as of June 1 we've had more than 3,000 views on our YouTube channel;
the discussion periods following the presentations have been well-attended
and usually went to the end of the allocated time period; the feedback from
participants has been very positive and several members of these scientific
communities have contacted us to express interest in presenting at the
webinars.
"Virtual tools are currently more useful for maintaining and building on
existing networks. However, as these tools improve, we are convinced that
their utility for these and other currently underdeveloped functions will
increase," he added.

Cover design for Ambio special section by Alex Giurca
In many countries, forests are important sources of renewable biomass and
figure prominently in bioeconomy strategies.
Forests can be stretched beyond their traditional applications and used in
textiles, chemicals, and cross-laminated timber, among other things, and
can provide climate and ecological benefits, lead to rural employment
opportunities and add to regional growth.
But there are competing demands on forest resources and competing
perspectives on how forests should be used. These conflicting perspectives
and perceptions on the forest-based bioeconomy impact policy, land use and
forest management.
A recent special section in *Ambio: A Journal of Environment and Society*
pulls together studies that look at how, for example, perceptions of the
forest-based bioeconomy differ across countries and social groups.
It's important, say the special section editors, because it opens the door
to more inclusive, locally and socially relevant bioeconomy policies and
strategies.
The special section is entitled *Social dimensions of a forest-based
bioeconomy: A summary and synthesis*.
"We wanted to better understand the different perspectives and perceptions
of the bioeconomy among forest sector stakeholders, future professionals
and urban citizens," said Dr. Lea Ranacher, an editor of the special
section.
"The studies range from review and discourse approaches to consumer
studies. We hope to encourage further social scientific contributions that
allow a more critical view on the concept of bioeconomy," she said.
Dr. Ranacher teaches at the University of Natural Resources and Life
Sciences in Vienna and is also a senior researcher for market analysis and
innovation research at Wood K plus in Austria.
"People's perceptions of bioeconomy matter. The transition to a
forest-based bioeconomy depends on how people – from all walks of life –
perceive wood-based products and their value chains," she said. "In order
to better understand the transition to a bioeconomy we need to investigate
different perceptions and what influences those."
Dr. Ida Wallin, another of the editors added: "Social scientific research
on bioeconomy is still rare and we wanted to address this research gap."
"Studying the social dimensions of bioeconomy in Europe produces more
comprehensive and critical perspectives on the forest-based bioeconomy,"
said Dr. Wallin, a post-doctoral researcher at the Chair for Forest and
Environmental Policy at the University of Freiburg, Germany, and IUFRO
officeholder.
"We see (in the studies) that perceptions of bioeconomy in Europe differ
based on where one lives," she said. "As an example, forestry students in
Northern European countries had more awareness of bioeconomy than those in
Southern European countries."
She attributes that primarily to the fact that Northern European countries
have strongly promoted the bioeconomy concept for some time now, while
Southern European countries have begun to formulate their policy strategies
more recently.
Dr. Wallin also pointed out that studies in the special section show that
gender, age, pre-existing knowledge, ecological attitudes and consumption
style all factor into people's perception of bioeconomy and that further
research along these lines is needed.
Dr. Ranacher noted: "Consumers and other citizens who are 'non-experts' are
the end-users of the products and they elect the representatives who make
forest-based policy decisions. Current bioeconomy conceptualizations show
shortcomings regarding the sustainability and social inclusion aspects.
"The special section shows a diversity of social scientific studies and
demonstrates the value of this research field by uncovering dominant
discourses and perspectives."
[image: Photo showing PerForm group meeting in Uppsala, Sweden. Photo

PerForm group meets in Uppsala, Sweden. Photo provided by PerForm
The special section is the result of research done within the
PerForm project (2018-2020). PerForm was conducted in collaboration with
IUFRO's 9.05.01 unit which focuses on bioeconomy policy research and is
coordinated by Dr. Helga Pülzl of Vienna's University of Natural Resources
and Life Sciences.
PerForm is an international collaboration of researchers funded by the
European Forest Institute and coordinated by Prof. Daniela Kleinschmit of
the University of Freiburg with collaborating researchers from Austria,
Slovakia, France, Italy, Sweden and Finland. Prof. Kleinschmit is also
IUFRO Vice-President responsible for Divisions.
The aim of PerForm was to better understand regional disparities of
national bioeconomy policies and explore the different perceptions of a
forest-based bioeconomy in Europe.
The *Ambio* special section contains the main scientific results from the
PerForm project as well as findings from other research groups on the topic
of the social dimensions of forest-based bioeconomy.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, for now you can register only for the online
conference. In early June 2021, we will decide if and how many attendees
can participate on-site (although this will be subject to government travel
restrictions that may change at short notice). You will then be able to
acquire an additional on-site package.
EVOLTREE is a European network of research institutions and universities
engaged in studying the evolution and functioning of forest ecosystems, in
particular trees as the foundation species in forest stands. A prime topic
in the face of ongoing climate change is to elucidate how trees, together
with their associated organisms such as mycorrhizal fungi, respond to rapid
environmental changes.

Subject: [IUFRO Div 4] International Tree Mortality Network seminar series:
Tree mortality modelling by Lisa Hülsmann May 6 (5 pm CEST)
To: <div4(a)lists.iufro.org>, <div7(a)lists.iufro.org>, <div8(a)lists.iufro.org>
Dear all,
The International Tree Mortality Network, an initiative of the IUFRO task
force on monitoring trends and patterns in global tree mortality, continues
the online seminar series join on *May 6, 5 pm CEST*, with:
*Dr. Lisa Hülsmann*
*Title: Tree mortality modelling – a tool for ecological inference and a
challenge for projecting forest dynamics*
*Abstract:* Tree death is ubiquitous in forests, even without climate
change, and has a lasting impact on forest structure, species composition,
biomass, and biodiversity. By relating tree mortality and other vital rates
to tree, forest, and environmental conditions, we can therefore identify
the mechanisms that govern the shape of forest ecosystems. In turn, these
empirical relationships can be useful for projecting future forest dynamics
and range limits of tree species. In the talk, I will discuss empirical
tree mortality models as a diagnostic opportunity and a modeling challenge
through two examples: the role of conspecific negative density dependence
(Janzen-Connell effects) for tree diversity and the tighter coupling of
dynamic vegetation models to forest data.
*Bio:* Dr. Lisa Hülsmann leads a junior research group at the University of
Regensburg (Germany) and combines empirical and simulation models to
investigate biotic interactions, ecosystem productivities, range limits and
their response to environmental change and human activities especially in
forest ecosystems. She studied forest ecology and hydrogeology at the
University of Göttingen and did her PhD on tree mortality modelling at ETH
Zurich.
