Dear colleagues,
As part of our research initiative SmartProSys, a PhD position (75%) is available at Otto
von Guericke University Magdeburg, located in central Germany between Hanover and Berlin.
https://www.ovgu.de/en/.
The research initiative "SmartProSys: Smart Process Systems for a Green Carbon-based
Chemical Production in a Sustainable Society" aims to replace fossil raw materials in
chemical production with renewable carbon sources, thus contributing to a carbon-neutral
society. It follows a system-oriented strategy and investigates resource-efficient
degradation and synthesis strategies at process level, intelligent catalytic conversions
at molecular level, and economic and societal impacts at a higher system level. The
complexity of the system requires the development of powerful computational and machine
learning methods for the design, simulation, optimization and control of the system.
SmartProSys involves researchers from the fields of systems-oriented process engineering,
chemistry, mathematics, logistics, political science, and psychology. The aim of the
SmartProSys is to create a focal point in the sense of the Excellence Initiative of the
Federal Government, which is currently funded by the Ministry for Science, Energy, Climate
Protection and the Environment of the State of Saxony-Anhalt. Further information about
the research initiative SmartProSys can be found on our website:

We are looking for a PhD candidate in the social sciences with an interest in public
policy analysis of political processes in bioeconomy / industrial policy, in particular on
the sustainable transformation of the chemical industry. The research as well integrates
land-use related questions resulting from the potential transformations of chemical
industry. So a forest policy / bioeconomy background could be helpful.
Attached you can find the job offer (in German and English, please scroll down for
English). The job offer is also available here:
